Jerome Kern, the father of American musical theater, was born into a middle-class family in Ne w
York City in 1885. Kern’s mother, Fanny, loved the piano. She began to teach Kern how to play when he
was very young. He became quite a good piano player but not so good that anyone expected him to become
a great musician. Kern’s father said his son could never make money by creating music. But he later came
to believe that Kern might do better in music than in business after all. So he let the boy go to Europe to
study music.
Jerome Kern began his career as a song writer in theaters in London and New York City. Success
came quickly. By the early 1920s, Kern was a successful young composer for Broadway musical comedies.
In one three-year period alone, he wrote music for nineteen shows. One of Kern’s best-loved songs is
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Although Kern’s songs are easy to remember after being heard a few times, they
are not simple. His songs are always creative, even demanding. An example is the song All the Things You
Are.

American musical plays at that time were still usually copied from European ones. Often the stories
seemed foolish and the people in them did not seem real. Songs and dances often had no connection to the
story. Kern wanted to try something completely new. He wanted to do a truly American musical, with real
American characters and real situations. In 1927, he found the story he wanted. It was the book Show Boat
by American writer Edna Ferber. The story dealt with some unusually serious issues for a musical. It
showed the hard lives of African-Americans in the South. And it showed marriage between people of
different races, which was against the law at that time. Although serious in places, Show Boat was not a
tragedy. The public and critics loved it. Show Boat became the greatest work of American musical theater.
It was Kern’s music that made the show a great success. Music historians say he led the development of the
first truly American theater music.

When scientists study climate change, they mostly focus on the change in global average temperature,
but neglect(忽视) to explore how temperature variability(易变性) has changed with climate change. It is
well known that warming temperatures will cause the rising ocean and increased flooding, especially in
coastal regions such as those in the United States, but what do varying temperatures mean for the changing
seasons?
“We describe, for the first time, changes in temperature variability across the globe. We’ve had a
long discussion about changes in the average temperature. It has been continuing for over 30 years,”
leading study author George Wang, at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Germany,
said in a statement. “It’s very clear that temperatures have shifted a cross the globe. It’s less clear if the
variation in temperature has changed.”
Described in the journal Nature Climate Change, Wang and co-author Michael Dillon , with the
University of Wyoming, analyzed more than one billion temperature measurements from 7,906 weather
stations with data from 1926 to 2009. Monthly and yearly averages of daily temperature extremes showed
that since 1950, minimum and maximum daily and average temperatures are increasing, which means what
we experience over a few days now is more like temperatures we experience over a year.
This could be potentially changing the ecological influence of seasons. For example, the variability in
temperature could potentially mean bugs survive for a longer period in non-tropical regions. The result
could increase crop damage from insect pests or spread of diseases, such as malaria( 疟 疾 ) spread by
mosquitoes.
Also, plants in some regions rely on the changing seasons to know when to produce flowers and
fruits. With temperatures becoming less variable, it becomes harder for these plants to behave appropriately
to the season, to the point where eventually they might not produce any fruits at all.

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized. Star food writer Michael Pollanonce wrote, “The
work of cooking offered fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” But while
home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, Sarah Bowen, sociologist from North
Carolina State University argues that the stress that cooking puts on women may be unworthy.
The researchers interviewed 150 mothers and spent 250 hours observing 12 families. The mothers
they interviewed had largely accepted the social message that “home-cooked meals have become the mark
of good mothering, stable families and healthy citizens,” but as much as they wanted to achieve that ideal
strongly recommended by foodies( 美 食 家 ), they didn’t have the conditions to get there, especially for
low-income mothers. Low-income mothers often don’t have regular work schedules, making it impossible
to have set meal times. And they often don’t have the money for fresh agricultural products and, in some
cases, can’t afford to pay for even a basic kitchen setup.

In addition, all women find that their own family members present a major obstacle to their desire to
produce diverse meals. The women interviewed faced not just children but grown adults who were
picky(挑剔的),and ungrateful for their efforts. Mothers want to try new recipes and diverse ingredients, but
they know that it will cause other family members to reject the meals. Instead, they continue to make old
meals. The saddest part is that picky husbands were just as much.
The researchers quote food writer Mark Bittman, who says that the goal should be “to get people to
see cooking as a joy rather than a burden.” The researchers argue that the main reason why people see
cooking mostly as a burden is that it is a burden. It’s expensive and time-consuming and often done for a
bunch of ingrates who would rather just be eating fast food anyway. If we want women to see cooking as
fun, then these obstacles need to be fixed first. And whatever burden is left, the unsatisfying result needs to
be shared.

W: Actually there are lots of countries. For example, Brazil, Australia and China are some of the popular
destinations nowadays.
M: Well, what can tourists do in these countries？
W: Quite a lot of activities. For example, we can go dolphin watching in Australia and mountain climbing
in China.
M: Mountain climbing, terrific!
W: Yes, you know many famous mountains are located there. We can also go river rafting in Brazil or bird
watching in the USA.
M: Wo w, it sounds great, Hannah. Thanks for your kind introduction.
W: You’re welcome.

M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe, Dorothy. When are you leaving?
W: In just two weeks, and as you know, I am really thrilled. I’ve been looking forward to this training
program for a long time. But there are still a few things I need to do before I go.
M: Like what?
W: Like renewing my passport and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I’m gone.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W: No way! I’ll never find another apartment like it around here. But I don’t like the idea of paying three
months for an empty apartment, either. So, I’m looking for someone to take it while I’m away.
M: Um, let me think. Oh, I know just a person. An old colleague of mine, Jim Thomas. He is coming here
to do some research this summer, from June to August.
W: Well, that’s exactly when I’ll be away!
M: I’ll be calling Jim late this week anyway, so I’ll mention it to him.
W: Well, thanks, Bill. You are so kind.

W: I hope I’ve given you a clear idea of the schedule for your London weekend. And, before I finish, let
me just give you some pieces of advice which should make your sta y more enjoyable. Firstly, please do
remember to put on some comfortable shoe s. London is a big place, so whatever you do and wherever you
go, you’ll find yourself doing quite a lot of walking. Therefore, comfortable shoes are really necessary.
And secondly, please look after your money. Keep it safe at all times, and then you will not have any
unpleasant accident, which could unluckily ruin your whole weekend. You’ll find a copy of your
weekend’s schedule in your room. Take a look at it, and make sure that you’re clear about everything.
