One of the most important things that has happened to me occurred long before I was aware
of it. As the story goes, I was three days old and Mom was singing “The Name Game” song to me:
“Christine Bo-Bean.” By day four, I was given a new name —Christine-Bo-Bean, or just Bo-Bee
to my mother.
Now, I am Bo to her and close friends. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I
recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique
and memorable as I am.
People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t
know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice;
it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I
fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.
Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I
have changed. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.
When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people
and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.
As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I
can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a
single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.
I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want
to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.
1.When was the author given a nickname?
A.When she was three years old.
B.On the fourth day after she was born.

A.They think the author is active and crazy.
B.They care about the author’s most recent feelings.
C.They don’t realize the author has changed.
D.They don’t know the author has changed her name.
3.What kind of person was the author in the past?
A.She showed no interest in reading.
B.She took pleasure in finding new things.
C.She loved reading and sharing books with friends.
D.She lacked confidence and preferred to be alone.

Cervantes was born to poor parents. His future looked dark as he grew to see a life of sadness
and poverty before him. He joined the army as a common soldier and was hurt so badly that he
could not use his left arm.
He later failed to find a job and, on two occasions, was sent to prison. He continued to have
brushes with the law and struggled just to survive.
But, despite these troubles of his life, he never let go of his dream---to write a book. He
realized his dream and he wrote a book. In the book he told of a beautiful story which came from

have written such a wonderful work if he had not seen some potential(潜能) within himself.

see situations as they are, others as they can be.
Some see people as they are, others as they can be. And some see themselves as they are, others as they can be. But when we set our sights upon the best that is within a situation or a
human being, what we see will come to be. And we’ll know the power of hope.

I'd been retired for four years, when a friend suggested university. I thought he was joking---I
was rubbish at school and failed my 11 plus. But we love to compete over Mastermind and
University challenge, and he thought I'd make it. And he was absolutely right!
I did a foundation course first, which was part time at the University Lifelong Learning
Centre (LLC), two nights a week and the odd Saturday. I did quite well, and that gave me the
confidence to do a full time, three year degree. I'm passionate about art,and I always wanted to be
here for the journey and not the destination. That sounds really corny, but it was the truth in my

Initially it was a bit strange fitting in with my course mates. They were all 18,straight out of

some volunteering through the LLC, chatting to prospective students about my experience of coming to university. I tell them my story and basically encourage them to give it a go you've got
nothing to lose. I like to think I've convinced a few of them.
I have no regrets at all. Enrolling in university was the best piece of advice I've received in
years, especially post- retirement. I needed routine in my life;I needed purpose. I'm not going to

My daughter was being thrown out of the sixth grade. The teacher said, “She may not be up
to what we’re trying to accomplish.” He was really saying she didn’t have the intelligence. I got
mad because I knew she was smart, just as my father had known I was smart when I was failing in
school. We had her tested. I decided to get myself tested as well, and found that the troubles she
was having were exactly what I had had — dyslexia. By then I was a successful television writer,
and had won an Emmy Award for “The Rockford Files.”
If I had known earlier that something beyond my control could explain why I was a low
achiever, I may not have worked so hard in my late 20s and early 30s. I was writing and writing. I
was working for no other reason than to hear people praise me, because I did badly in all my
courses.
I once asked a friend who had always gotten an A, “How long did you study for this?” He
said, “I didn’t. I just glanced at it.” So he must be smarter. I began to ask, “What will happen to
me when I’m not good at anything?” Despite my doubts, I did become successful, and people now
say to me, “So you’ve overcome dyslexia.”
No. You don’t overcome it, you learn to compensate for it. Some easy things are very hard
for me. Most people who go through college read twice as fast as I do. I avoid dialing a phone if I
can, because I sometimes have to try three times to get the number right.
Despite my weaknesses I view dyslexia as a gift, not a curse (诅咒). Many dyslexics are good
at right-brain, abstract thought, and that’s what my kind of creative writing is. And I can write
quickly, and can get up to 15 pages a day. Writing is my strength.
The real fear I have for dyslexic children is not they have to struggle in school, but that they
will quit on themselves before they get out of school. Parents have to create victories for them,
whether it’s music, sports or art. You can make your dyslexic child able to say, “Yeah, reading is
hard. But I have other things I can do.”
16.The writer decided to get himself tested as well because he________.A.wanted to know if they had the same problem
B.didn’t believe his daughter had the problem
C.had to take a regular medical examination
D.accepted that his daughter was not smart
17.We can learn from the second paragraph that the writer________.
A.struggled and got better grades
B.didn’t work hard when he was young
C.was praised for overcoming dyslexia
D.was thankful not knowing of dyslexia earlier
18.According to the passage, a dyslexic person________.
A.is less intelligent B.always fails in school
C.reads more slowly than normal people D.performs worse in left-brain activities
19.What can we learn from the story?
A.Clumsy birds have to start flying early. B.God shuts one door but opens another.
C.Never judge a person by his appearance. D.No one can make a good coat with bad cloth.
【答案】16.A 17.D 18.C 19.B

explain why I was a low achiever, I may not have worked so hard in my late 20s and early 30s.(如

多岁和 30 多岁的时候没有这么努力)可知,作者感激没有早知道有读写困难症。故选 D。
18.细节理解题。根据第四段的 Most people who go through college read twice as fast as I do.(大
多数读大学的人读得比我快两倍)可知,一个读写困难的人读得比正常人慢。故选 C。

( 诅 咒 ). Many dyslexics are good at right-brain, abstract thought, and that’s what my kind of

strength.(尽管我有弱点,但我认为诵读困难是一种礼物,而不是一种诅咒。 许多诵读困难
