Then, in June, my mom reminded me of my promise, but I’d totally forgotten about it by then. Did I have the time? Did I have the money? Did I have the will? I’d walk into a fire for my mom, but we’re very different travelers. I usually travel alone with a backpack, whereas mom never travels alone, and takes so many carry-on bags that she looks like a Christmas tree. There was also the boredom. Mom’s childhood town is lovely, but we saw everything there years ago. “Are you sure you need me to come with you?” I asked over the phone. Silence. Then Mom screamed at me not to worry about it and she wasn’t going any more. I screamed at her not to be silly; she screamed “Fine”; I screamed “Fine”. Then I felt bad and booked our flights and hotel immediately. At first, it was fine. We drove past the apartment where she grew up, ate great food, then met her friends for yum cha (早茶). After a few days of this, however, I was bored. I’d grown tired of hearing the non-stop gossip about people I didn’t know. On the night of the reunion, I convinced mom to go by herself. While she was out, I swam, caught up with work, and stared at the ceiling. When she came back, I was in a good mood. She was in an even better one, telling me about the reunion in ways that made me cry with laughter. All we’d needed was time apart. The next day, as we shopped together, my mom laughed loudly as she pointed at a perfume (香水) bottle with the name “Si” on it – Si means faeces (粪便) in Cantonese. Mom put some of the perfume on, as we both cried with laughter. She’ll never be the most well-matched person for me to travel with, but covered in Si, she reminded me that she’s definitely the funniest. 1.When the author’s mother first asked him to travel with her, he ______. It’s a lie, of course. We’re pretty much even(相等的)when it comes to the children and the elderly. But the paying of bills isn’t 50/50-my wife pays all sorts of household expenses, so I never even have to set eyes on them. And the cooking isn’t 50/50, either. The truth is that I am the cook. On my recent 40th birthday, I received the following gifts from my children: a new pot, two mini bottles of truffle oil, a decorative salad-dressing pourer, and a juice-making machine. For a moment I longed for something more manly, a cricket bat, perhaps, and then had to admit that all these things would be useful for me. It’s not that my wife can’t or doesn’t like to cook (she makes delicious Welsh cakes). Nor has it always been this way. In the early years of our marriage I’d be relaxing with a glass of wine while my wife prepared for dinner after work. But at some point that changed and I became the cook. Ten years with my wife gave me the rewards---I can throw together a roast, and I can make much foreign food. But I have truly become a monster(怪物) in the kitchen, unable to keep myself away from cooking. “You have to add Dijon to the sauce; it brings out the taste of the cheese,” I volunteer, as my wife is cooking. “Quick, stir in the butter so the dish becomes delicious.” Is it any wonder that my wife has given up coming into the kitchen while I find the whole process of chopping, mixing, and adding things deeply satisfying? 9.What do the writer and his wife probably share evenly at home? a. One night a few months before, I’d asked her what we could give her that she would really like. “Maybe something big, that all three of us can go in on?” I encouraged, knowing that my brothers and I would cough up whatever it cost while also suspecting that any gift she might think up would be something strange but affordable like a duck-shaped bath soap. “I know exactly what I want from you kids,” she said, like she’d loaded this gun a month ago. “Really?” Was she thinking of a trip to Hawaii? A latest bathroom decoration? “Absolutely.” She nodded in that way she does when she is dead sure. She seemed to be waiting for me to ask again, so I did. “Well?” “If there is any problem that you or your brothers have that I can help with, I’d like to know about it.” Astonishing. What a woman. She lives to serve. Oh, I wish that I could have an ounce of her devotion. “God, Mom..” I said. She put her finger up to indicate that she wasn’t quite finished. “And if there’s any problem that you have that there is nothing I can do to change,” she said, “I’d like to not know about it.” Astonishing. What a woman. Oh, I wish that I could be that clear-headed and direct. “You’re amazing.” “Listen, Kelly,” she said, “I’ve been a mother since 1964, and I’d like to stop worrying and get some sleep.” Oh, Ma. I got you. You’ve carried us long enough. As of your 75th birthday, your status shifts to a mother retired with highest merits. You’ve done fine work. Nobody could have done more. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace (丢脸) because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout (辍学者). She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children.
