Task 12
1. On average, these footprints are 14 to 18 inches long, 5 to 9 inches wide and much larger than those of a human. (P18)
【分析讲解1】这是一个由and引导的并列句,其中much larger than those of a human是一个比较句型,those指代footprints,其单数为that,指代的内容为一类但不是同一个。例如:
Equipped with modern facilities, today’s libraries differ greatly from those of the past.
The mountain is about 3,000 meters high.
She is 1.72 meters tall.
The water is about 120 meters deep.
The road is 25 meters wide.
【分析讲解3】 副词much, many, far, any, rather, even, still, a lot等常用来修饰形容词或副词的比较级。如:
There are many more sheep than people in this mountainous area.
The lecture is far more interesting than the one we attended yesterday.
2. Some scientists even think that these footprints could have been made by people playing a joke.(P18)
其中could have done sth.
I could have written down your phone number.
【联想】 must have done sth.
can’t / couldn’t have done sth.
He must have finished his homework last night because he went to bed early.
My sister met Jim at the airport yesterday afternoon,so he couldn’t have attended your lecture.
3. He became convinced that they exist while studying the footprints. (P18)
如:afraid, anxious, angry, happy, hopeful, proud, sad, thankful等。例如:
I am very pleased that my son has been admitted to Harvard.
I am very sorry that I was late for the meeting.
可补充完整为:while he was studying the footprints。
Be careful when (you are) crossing the street.
If (I am) invited, I will go to the party.
