Teaching contents 1. New words and phrases: player, member, club, free, hope, dream, true, free time, come true 2. New structures: He is a new member of Huanghe Football Club.‎ ‎ He looks strong and plays football very well.‎ ‎ I hope his dream comes true. ‎ ‎ ‎ III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty Understand the usages of the new words and phrases.‎ Give a report on their group’s favourite player.‎ IV. Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in ‎1. Read the text and finish the table T: Boys and girls, in the last lesson, we learned an article about Simon’s hero—Li Hua. Do you still remember what the article say?‎ T: Good. Please open you book and turn to page 20. Let’s read aloud the article together. While you are reading, please pay attention to the details, because we need to finish this form later. Are you ready? ‎ T: Excellent! You read it very well. Now, shall we try to complete the form? Here are some information about Li Hua. You can first discuss with you partner if you want.‎ ‎2. Retell the text according to the table T: Right. You did a good job! Now can you try to tell the article according to the table? Here are some words, phrases and language points for you. Let’s have a look at them one by one. Please take some notes down if necessary.‎ ‎1. Explain “come from/ be from”‎ T: Li Hua comes from Guangdong. “Come from”, we can also say “be from”. We are from China. I will show you some pictures of people from different countries.‎ 5‎ ‎ Where are they from? Where do they come from? Have a guess.‎ S1: He is from the UK. He comes from the UK.‎ T: Yes. You are right. What about him?‎ S2: He is from the USA. He comes from the USA.‎ T: That’s right. What about them?‎ S3: They are from Japan. They come from Japan.‎ T: You are so clever.‎ ‎2. Explain “player”‎ T: Li Hua is football player. He has some friends. What are they? What do they do for a living?‎ S1: Yao Ming is a basketball player.‎ T: Yes. You are right. So he is good at playing basketball. What about him?‎ S2: Lin Dan is a badminton player.‎ T: That’s right. So he does well in playing badminton. What about her?‎ S3: Feng Kun is a volleyball player.‎ T: You are so clever. So she is good at playing volleyball.‎ ‎3. Explain “a member of ...”‎ T: Li Hua plays football well. He is a member of Huanghe Football Club. Can you put this sentence in another way?‎ S1: He is in Huanghe Football Club. He plays for Huanghe Football Club.‎ T: Good. Here is a sentence for you to translate. Who can?‎ S2: Millie wants to be a new member of the school volleyball club .‎ T: Excellent. Another sentence.‎ S3: Yao Ming plays for Rocket.‎ ‎4. Explain “club”‎ T: Do we have any club in our school? Are you a member of any club in our school? Let’s look at some pictures. What club are they? Let’s say them one by one.‎ S1: Literature Club.‎ S2: Music Club.‎ S3: Drawing Club.‎ S4: Dancing Club.‎ S5: Singing Club.‎ T: Excellent. You see. Explain “in one's free time/when somebody is free” and the word “free”‎ T: Li Hua studies English and listens to the music in his free time. Here in one’s free time, we can also say when somebody is free. Let’s put the two sentences into Chinese. Each sentence please say it in two ways.‎ S1: What do you usually do in your free time? What do you usually do when you are free?‎ T: Very good. This one?‎ S2: We go to the Dancing Club in our free time. We go to the Dancing Club when we are free.‎ ‎ T: The word free has three meanings. Let’s look at them one by one. If you want ‎ 5‎ others to help, and you don't know if they are busy or not, you can ask: Are you free now? What does the word free here mean?‎ S1: 空闲的.‎ T: Right. The holiday is coming. The students are very happy because: They are going to be free. What is the meaning of free?‎ S2:自由的.‎ T: Good. You are very lucky today because you can get the lunch without (不) paying for it. That means: You can get the lunch for free. Can you understand the sentence?‎ S3: 你可以免费得到午餐。‎ T: Excellent. So free here means 免费的.‎ ‎6. Explain “enjoy”‎ T: When Li Hua is free, he enjoys listening to music. Look at the word enjoy. We can say enjoy something, enjoy doing something. Enjoy doing something, we can also say like doing something, love doing something. Can you put the sentence into Chinese?‎ S1: Millie enjoys playing the piano in her free time.‎ T: We can also say...‎ S2: Millie likes playing the piano when she is free. Millie loves playing the piano in her free time.‎ T: Very good.‎ ‎7. Explain “listen to”‎ T: Pay attention to the phrase listen to. Can you translate the three sentences?‎ S1: Listen to me.‎ S2: My grandpa listens to the radio every day.‎ S3: Do you enjoy listening to music?‎ ‎8. Explain “dream”‎ T: Li Hua’s dream is to play in the next World Cup. Here dream is a noun, and it is a countable noun. Who can translate this phrase?‎ S1: Colourful dreams T: Good. Dream can also be a verb. Who can put this sentence into Chinese?‎ S2: I often dream of my grandpa. ‎ T: Very good.‎ ‎9. Explain “hope”‎ T: We hope Li Hua’s dream comes true. Hope can be a verb. Hope to do. Who can translate this sentence?‎ S1: She hopes to go to Beijing next summer.‎ T: We can also put a sentence behind hope. Let’s put this sentence into Chinese?‎ S2: I hope you (will ) like this present.‎ T:Excellent. Pay attention. Can we say “hope sb to do sth”? No, that’s wrong. Hope can also be ‎ used as a noun. How to say this sentence in English?‎ S3: There is no hope without a dream.‎ T: Good! So we should all have dreams.‎ 5‎ ‎10. Explain “come true”‎ T: We all have dreams and we hope our dreams come true. Do you know the differences between true and real? True means 真实的;真诚的。一位真诚的朋友。Who can translate?‎ S1: A true friend.‎ T: That’s right. What about this one?‎ S2: True or false.‎ T: Good. Real means 真材实料的。How to put this sentence into Chinese?‎ S3: One is a paper tiger, the other is a real tiger. ‎ ‎11. Explain “look”‎ T: Li Hua looks strong. Look plus adj. How does Yang Ming look? Group 3, you talk about Feng Kun. Group 4, you talk about Sun Yang. Each group member says one sentence about your player. I will give you five minutes to get ready for it.
