I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. master how to use the suffix-y to form adjectives;
2. master how to use adjectives to describe the weather and things;
3. talk about the weather by using what they’ve learned.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: sleepy, shine, sudden, cause, snowball, fight, cover … with, make people sleepy, the sudden heavy rain, snowball fights, make them look funny.
2. New structure: They like to have a short trip around the city at the weekend.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
How to use the suffix-y to form adjectives.
How to use adjectives to describe the weather and things.
How to talk about the weather by using what they’ve learned.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Show students some pictures of the weather
2. Ask the students to use some adjectives to describe the weather
T: What’s the weather like today? /How is the weather today?
S: The sun is shining in the sky now. It is a sunny day.
The shine of the sun is bright. It’s a shiny morning.
There are many clouds in the sky. It’s a cloudy day today.
The wind blows hard. It is windy.
We can’t see clearly in the fog. It is foggy.
How heavy the rain is! It’s a rainy day.
The snow is very heavy. It is snowy. People often have snowball fights in winter.
【设计意图】通过呈现天气图片导入课题,激起学生的学习兴趣。通过更多的天气图片,让学生注意天气的名词和形容词,并注意其变化规律。
Step 2 Presentation
1. Talk about the weather
A: What is the weather like today?
B: It’s…today but it will be …later.
2. Draw a conclusion
T: We can add the suffix-y to some nouns to form adjectives. The suffix-y means
“having the quality of”

Step 3 Practice
1. Fill in the blanks to complete some sentences.
2. Finish the article on P89 of the textbook by using proper words.
3. Complete the dialogue by using proper words.
4. Read the story “The Little Match Girl” and complete the passage with the proper adjectives. Then retell the story
5. Have a discussion
Watch a video and introduce a new word “smoggy”. Give people some advice on how to keep healthy and safe on smoggy days or in terrible weather.
【设计意图】了解基本规律后,迅速对所学的后缀做巩固练习,这样能更深刻的记忆所学词的后缀。布置任务时注重递进原则,将课文内容改编成对话,让学生通过对话形式进一步巩固所学的形容词。让学生阅读《卖火柴的小女孩》,用本节课所学的形容词完成文章,不仅灵活练习了本节课所学的形容词,还拓展了学生的阅读能力,培养了学生口头语言表达能力。最后运用本课所学目标词汇,结合单元话题,进行主题拓展,培养学生的环保意识。

【设计意图】结合本单元话题,升华到关注健康生活的主题。
V. Homework
1. Try to find more words which have the same suffix –y as we learn in this class.
2. Write a short article, giving people more advice on how to save the earth and ourselves.
