‎ Unit 4 Wildlife Protection ‎ ‎ Using language (reading and writing)‎ The General Idea of This Period:‎ This period is about two parts. First, read the passage:animals extinction. It will help the students learn more about wildlife and realize what made the animals disappear and what we should do to help to save the endangered animals. Then write a letter of how to protect the endangered animal in Sanya--egrets.‎ Teaching Aims:‎ ‎1.Train the students’ reading and writing abilities.‎ ‎2.Learn some useful words and expressions:‎ ‎ disappear,county,die out,dust, pollute... ‎ ‎3.Enable the students to know what they should do to help the endangered animals and realize the importance of protecting them . ‎ Teaching Important Point:‎ Help the students to understand the passages and realize the importance of protecting the endangered animals.‎ Teaching Difficult Points:‎ ‎1.How to improve the students’ reading and writing abilities.‎ ‎2.How to help the students understand real reasons of the disappearance of the animals and realize the importance of protecting them.‎ Teaching Methods:‎ Asking-and-answering activity to check the students’ understanding of the text;individual,pair or group work to finish each task.‎ Teaching Aids:‎ ‎ A multimedia computer and a blackboard.‎ Teaching Procedures:‎ Step 1 Warming up and lead-in.‎ Ask students to look at some pictures of the endangered animals.‎ T:As you can see, there are many endangered animals such as tiger, panda, ‎ elephant...‎ If we don’t save them, they will die out like many animals in the past such as dinosaurs! Now we’ll invite a dinosaur to give you some information about it.‎ The dinosaur acted by a student will give some information about it.‎ Step 2 Pre-reading T:Can you guess why the dinosaurs disappeared?‎ ‎(Show the pictures on the screen.)‎ Step 3 ‎Reading Task 1 Fast-reading ‎ Ask the students to read the passage quickly and find the topic sentences.‎ Task 2 Detailed reading ‎ ①Ask the students to read the passage carefully and fill in the blanks.‎ Animal ‎_____________‎ Where they ‎ were ‎ found ‎★The eggs of ___________species have been found in ______________________.‎ ‎★A rare new species of _________ dinosaur was discovered in________________.‎ ‎★Scientists found that they could not only ___________ but also___________.‎ Why they ‎ disappeared ‎★ Some scientists think___________ from space hit the earth and put _____________ into the air.‎ ‎★ Others think the earth got ________________.‎ ‎ ② According to a UN report, find numbers in para.3.‎ ‎(Then check the answers.)‎ ‎ Step 4: Discussion ‎ T: What’s worse, more and more animals are in danger of disappearing!‎ ‎ Ask the students to discuss the questions with each other.‎ ‎ ①Why are they in danger?‎ ‎ ②What should we do to protect them?‎ ‎ Step 5 Writing T: In our city, there is also a kind of endangered animal—egrets! If we don’t save them, they will die out soon. Now please work in groups and write a letter to the city government of Sanya, giving them some suggestions on how to save them. ‎ Ask students to work in groups and write down the ideas. Then share their letters with the class.‎ Sample letter:‎ Dear sir or madam,‎ ‎ My name is _______, a senior student from Sanya No.4 middle school. As you know, everyone shares a responsibility in protecting the endangered animals. I am writing to give you some suggestions on how to save the egrets in Sanya. ‎ ‎ First of all, __________________________.‎ ‎ Secondly,____________________________.‎ ‎ At last,______________________________.‎ ‎ Please help the poor egrets and I am sure that they will survive with your help.‎ ‎ Yours,‎ ‎ ________‎ ‎ Step 6 Summary ‎ Give the students three sentences.‎ ‎ We have only one earth! ‎ ‎ Wildlife and man should be friends!‎ ‎ Helping the wildlife is helping ourselves.‎ ‎ Step 7 Homework ‎ ① Write the letter again carefully with more new ways to save the endangered animals.‎ ‎ ②Surf the Internet to find more information about the endangered animals and call on more people to protect them.‎
