Using language
一、教学目标
1. 目标语言
Students will learn and talk about standard English, American English dialects and Chinese Putonghua and dialects.

Students will be able to train their reading and listening skills;
Students will be encouraged to express freely in English.

Students will become more confident in sharing ideas and cooperating with peers.

Students will increase their awareness of cross-cultural communication through learning English.

Step1. Lead-in
以简短视频(英国小伙模仿24种英语口音)来导入话题“Standard English and dialects”,吸引学生注意力。以视频吸引学生兴趣,自然引入本课话题

Step2. Warming Up
Brainstorming: English dialects in different countries
Discussion: Is there standard English?
头脑风暴小组讨论 填补学生间的信息差,为活动的开展做好准备。通过头脑风暴形式发散学生的思维,激活学生原有的知识经验,加上小组讨论帮助学生大脑形成一个有关“标准英语与方言”的信息包,把它和阅读中将要出现的新知识有机结合起来。
Step3. Reading
Task One: Skimming
Ask the students to skim the passage and underline the topic sentence of each paragraph.
Ask the students to scan the passage and answer the following questions:
1. Is the English spoken on TV and the radio standard English?
2. How many English dialects have been mentioned?
3. Can Americans understand each other’s dialects?
任务型阅读 语言知识输入,学生根据形成的信息包,运用阅读策略,带着任务进行阅读。任务型阅读,将阅读简化,分步骤分层次阅读,加深对文本理解,阅读技巧的指导帮助学生完成阅读任务。
Step4. Listening
A taste of American English dialects. Imagine that you are in Houston, Texas, a city in the American South. Can you understand the local dialect?
Task One: Ask the students to listen to an example of the local dialect without the text.
Task Two: Ask the students to listen to Jan e’s translation and put these sentences in the right sequence.

___ Buford, Billy Bob and Lester went swimming.
___ Lester thought the catfish would eat him.
___ Buford and Billy Bob laughed.
___ Lester saw a catfish.
___ Now Lester is too afraid to visit the place.
任务型听力 听力输入,学生可以直接就两种口音进行对比,体会南方方言与标准英语的不同。指导学生进行听力,培养听力技能,同时通过两种口音对比,让学生初步感受文化对英语语言多样性的影响,引发文化意识。
Step5. Speaking
Americans can understand each other even if they speak different dialects. How about our own language?

Discuss any Chinese dialects you know of or can speak.
Introduce Dialects family in China
(Dialects are so different that people from different places cannot understand each other, while Putonghua is the very way to solve the problem. )
小组合作讨论 迁移运用知识,输出所学知识。 就英语语言文化与中国语言文化(普通话与方言)进行对比,启发学生思考不同文化及社会需要对语言形成的作用,培养跨文化意识 。
6. Summary
总结归纳总结所学 引导学生对自己学习过程进行归纳总结,感受学习成果,体验成功。
7. Homework
Review the lesson and retell it to friends;
Finish the exercise sheet. 将所学再次强化输出、巩固 引导学生在实际生活中运用英语,大胆开口。
