Messages can be sent quickly over great distances by radio nowadays, but many years ago, this was not usually possible. It was therefore difficult for a general in the First World War to get news of a battle quickly. The telephone was useful if the armies stayed in one place, but in an attack this instrument was useless.

Do you still remember the smog in many Chinese cities last winter? China exprienced some of the worst air pollution in its history during the winter of 2012. This is something other countries have faced before. The UK used to be the most polluted country in the world. London’s Big Smog of 1952 killed thousands of people.
On Dec 5, 2012, China made a plan for cutting down on air pollution for the next few years. According to this plan, Beijing and other 116 cities will cut the PM2.5 pollution by at least 5 percent by 2015.
PM2.5 refers to pollution with small particles (颗粒) which is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (直径). Human activities are the biggest cause of PM2.5 pollution, especially the things motor vehicles give off.
Health experts say that smaller particles are far more dangerous and may cause heart and lung diseases. They cannot be blocked (拦住) in our nose, and so travel directly to our lungs.
The starting point of the plan is to improve air quality and solve the PM2.5 problem which does harm to so many people. And the final goal is to protect people’s health. To meet the goal, we are encouraged to use clean energy and plant more trees. Meanwhile, the country will develop its city bus and subway systems.
