That person is very havoc, always out late evert night. If you ever hear one Singaporean telling another that, don’t rush to correct them. The two are just having a chat about someone else, in Singlish, the unofficial languages of Singaporeans.
Singlish is a mixture of English, Malay, Chinese and local slang. But like most “mixed” languages, it does not get much respect. It is not understood by non-Singaporeans. So, the government of Singapore has advised its people to learn
standard English.
Singapore’s government has started a “speak good English movement(运动)” among its people. It wants to have Singaporeans learn “Proper” English grammar, sentence structures and pronunciation. The idea is to make them speak a form of English readily understood by the rest of the world. But that doesn’t mean speaking with American or British accents(口音).
Since English is a global language, mastering it would help Singapore to take part in the global economy, develop it into an international centre and connect with the rest of the world.
For this purpose, the government has set up the ENTHUSE committee(委员会),which means Encouraging the Use of Standard English of both students and teachers by introducing programmes and activities.
Singaporeans are people of several origins(来源). Most of them speak their mother tongues(母语)at home as they are the only connection with their homelands. Otherwise they use English, because as a standard international language, English increases the chances of jobs. Since it makes it easier for them to communicate with people from other parts of the world, most Singaporeans are endorsing the government’s recent move.
The Singaporean government’s move follows similar attempts by the governments of countries where English is not the mother tongue. In Sri Lanka, the government has planned to have all the lessons taught in English in the higher classes. Even in India, where English is the second language of many people, several state governments are hurriedly reintroducing English in their state school. Knowing the importance of speaking English, the governments want their people to catch up with the English speakers as quickly as possible.
46. According to the passage, most mixed languages______.
A. are not allowed by the government
B. can only be understood by local people
C. disappear quickly
D. are hard to learn
47. The purpose of the “speak good English movement” is to_____.
A. help Singaporeans speak without an accent
B. stop Singaporeans from using bad language
C. advertise Singaporean talents to the rest of the world
D. encourage Singaporean to learn standard English
48. The underlined word “endorsing” in the passage probable means “______”.
A. recommending B. supporting C. doubting D. considering
C
During the 1960s, our family were rather poor. Although both of my parents worked, their jobs were not well paid. One spring, when I was 10, my father lost his job. And I could feel my mother’s sadness. I decided I would cheer her up by buying her a special Mother’s Day gift.
There was a famous store in the city—Agins, which was known for its high-end fashion and style. My mother, who couldn’t afford to shop there, sometimes mentioned the store in tones of great respect.
One day after school, I rode my bike to the store. I told the owner I was looking for a Mother’s Day present. I remember that the owner treated me like a valued customer. “Do you think she’d like a purse?” she asked. I told her I thought she might.
After walking to the back of the store, she returned with a box. She took out an Italian handbag made of leather.
“How much money do you have?” she asked.
“Twelve dollars.” I said.
“You are lucky. It’s only 11 dollars. You still have a dollar left over for the card.”
When my mother opened the gift the next Sunday morning, she stammered(结巴地说)in an excited tone, “Where did you get this?”
“I bought it at the Agins,” I said.
My mother was shocked into silence.
It wasn’t until many years later that I learned that the purse was worth several hundred dollars. I always felt bad that I never had a chance to thank the owner. Recently, I met someone at a party who knew her daughter, Roberta. I called Roberta; she told me her mother had died 22 years before.
Now my mother is 90. She still has the purse that I bought her. The other day she said to me, “letting you have the purse for just a few dollars was unbelievable enough. But she still let you leave a dollar for the card. I will never forget it.”
49. Why did the author want to buy a gift for his mother?
A. His father told him to do it.
B. He wanted to make his mother happy.
C. The price of the gift was lower than usual.
D. His mother often talked about fashion and style.

A. It was worth 11 dollars.
B. The author got it almost for free
C. The author wished for it for a long time
D. It was an American handbag made of leather

五、 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
根据文章内容完成表格(每个空格限填一词)。
In today’s world, it’s natural to feel tired sometimes during those long working days. Luckily, there are some things you can do to fight tiredness.
If you aren’t drinking plenty of water by now, you should! But remember that juice, soft drinks and the likes aren’t what you should drink if you are tired, because they are full of sugar that in fact causes you to lose much water from your body. Water is king, so make a habit to drink a glass of water whenever you feel tired. You can put a full glass of water next to you, you will remember to take a sip(啜一口)here and there throughout your activity. You’ll be surprised how quickly drinking water can get rid of your tiredness.
Sometimes you feel tired because you aren’t active, especially when you have to work at a computer or sit at a desk all day. Movement, any type of movement in exercise, can help you. Moving your body creates an increased blood flow which in return increases your energy and defeats(战胜)tiredness. Also it makes your breathe deeper and then you’ll be more energetic immediately. So, all that you need to do is just get up, stretch(伸展)a little bit, or walk around if you can.
Laughing a little can also help you fight your tiredness. You don’t have to laugh out loud. Simply finding something interesting is good. So start reading some jokes on the Internet, listen to some radio shows you like, or watch some funny videos on Youku. You will notice that once you start laughing, you won’t be tired any more.
