Sleep difficulties are a common problem for millions of adults. Even if you can get to sleep, you might have trouble staying asleep. So what gives? There are several factors that may affect your sleep.
Probably you already know caffeine is a stimulant and can affect your ability to fall asleep. But it can also lead to poor quality sleep including waking up in the middle of the night. Caffeine has a three-to-five-hour life, which means it takes your body many hours to get rid of half the caffeine you consumed. Keep in mind, energy drinks, cola, chocolate, Red Bull and certain teas also contain caffeine. Besides, some drugs, Amoxillin and cough syrup rather than Tylenol and panadol contain caffeine, too. Your best bet is to avoid caffeine about six hours before bed.
It is generally believed that stress and lack of sleep seem to go hand in hand. If you are stressed, it can be hard to sleep well and may lead to middle of the night insomnia(失眠). When you don’t get enough sleep, that can also lead to more stress and it becomes a vicious cycle(恶性循环).
Environment is another factor contributing to poor sleep. For example, loud noise can wake you up from a sound sleep or light peeking through the shades can wake you. Fortunately, there are ways to make your bedroom more sleep-friendly. Invest in a quality mattress and comfortable bedding and consider keeping your bedroom cool, which most people find helps sleep.
If you are struggling for optimal(最佳的)sleep, it is important that you avoid alcohol before bed. You know alcohol may help you get to sleep, but the bad news is that it actually can affect your quality of sleep. As the alcohol metabolizes(新陈代谢)and the effects wear off, it prevents deep sleep, which causes restless sleep throughout the night. Consider limiting alcohol a few hours before you go to sleep.

In big cities, you can often see hundreds of people walking with their heads down as they use their mobile phones.
But this actually changes the way people walk. According to a research recently published in the journal Motor Behaviour, people walk in a far more exaggerated(夸张的)way while using a phone.
The scientists at the University of Delaware in the US asked 22 volunteers to dial numbers on their mobile phones while walking on a treadmill(跑步机)for two minutes. The walkers wore 62 markers on different parts of their body, which were recorded by cameras to measure their movements.

The experiment showed that while they were distracted by dialing numbers, the volunteers began to walk in a strange, exaggerated way. Their knees bent as far as they could on each step.
The researchers said that people do this without realizing because their body senses that they are in more danger of falling over. The large, exaggerated movements help people move through crowds and deal with moving faster.
“People’s walking speed usually gets slower when they perform other tasks at the same time,” said Kelly Seymour from the University of Delaware, the first author of the study. “However, in today’s fast-paced world, people are often rushed and do not slow their walking speed. Even if they do, they remain more likely to fall while walking and performing another task than while only walking.”
The researchers also found that the participants made few mistakes in dialing numbers. This suggests that they focused more on dialing than walking.
The problem of text-walkers has become such a problem that last year Antwerp in Belgium brought in “text-walking lanes” so that they do not put others in danger.

B. They tend to walk very slowly.
C. Their movements aren’t affected.
D. They can perform multiple tasks with ease.
30. What do you think of the strange, exaggerated walk according to the passage?
A. It’s beneficial. B. It’s harmful.

You feel proud of yourself as a person who is not terribly attached to earthly possessions, and then you have tp part with something and feel your heart tighten.
Our oldest daughter Alice is having trouble letting go of a red couch. If you saw the couch you’d say, “That way to the dump(垃圾场).”
It’s not the couch she’s having trouble letting go of as much as the memories. It was their first sofa. It has been loaded and unloaded onto moving trucks seven times. Three kids have jumped on it. It’s so worn that the only way you could sell it would be in the dark, which is probably why it’s in the basement. Yet she’s having a hard time letting go and asked if I thought that was strange. “Completely,” I said. “You get it from me.”
When we were ready to get rid of our baby things, I sold our crib(婴儿床)at the neighborhood garage sale. I had pieces of it in the garage and the other pieces to it still in the house. A young woman said she wanted to buy it. My throat tightened and the tears began to well. She pulled out cash and I kept up my spirits.
But by the time I returned with the other pieces to the crib, I was all out crying. “Have you considered that maybe you’re not ready to sell it?” the woman asked. “No-o-o-o,” I sobbed. “It’s fine, really.” I cried. “Take it.”
Our attachment to stuff grows in direct relationship to the amount of time it has sat in one place. The longer it sits, the harder it is to get rid of it. You think, “Hey, we’ve hung onto it this long—it must be valuable! As though yellowing, a layer of dust and the scent of mould increase value.
Let the sofa go, I told my daughter. It served its purpose. You can get a new one. Give the kids some crackers and juice boxes and it will be like the old one is six weeks.

How I couldn’t get used to was the cigarette smoke that fill the air. Although it used to be the same for me in his hometown. the noise was also a relative new experience. Dear Tom,
How are you going on recently? I’m glad to hear that you are going to study in China. So I’m writing to tell you something about the new edition of our Chinese textbooks.
The most significant change is that numerous ancient poetry and essays are added to the textbooks. As we all know, the Chinese people are attaching more and more importance to the Chinese traditional culture. A tide of learning classic literature, which is considered as our ancestor’s wisdom, is flooding our country.
Thus, to prepare for it, you may as well learn more ancient poetry and essays from now on. Don’t hesitate to turn to me if there is any doubt. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
