Dear Sara,
Can you please help me improve my relationship with my mother? She is in her late 70s, and will
probably need me to care for her in the future. I am willing to take on this responsibility but I find seeing her
and talking to her stressful because I am so angry ab out what she and my father did to my elder sister.
My sister was born “out of wedlock” in the 1950s. My sister’s father disappeared and never turned up
again. My mother loved my sister a lot even if she was an unwanted baby. But then my mother met and
married my father. A few years later I was born.
But my father didn’t love my sister and my mother failed to protect her. We moved frequently, and my
sister was not allowed to come along. She never came on holiday with us; instead she was sent to holiday
camps. As she grew up, she started to use drugs and became an alcoholic.
My sister is now in her mid-50s, jobless, living on benefits and mixing with a crowd of drunks. She has
no partner, no children, no possessions and no company except for her dog. Her health is ruined, though she no
longer drinks. I support her financially, but our relationsh ip is rocky as she hates
- 15 -
the fact that my father loved
me. She has no contact with my mother and is to this day excluded (排除)from any family event, including
my father’s funeral.
My mother refuses even to mention my sister. I hate her because I think that if she could manage to
apologize to my sister, things might be a little better. But there is absolutely no chance of this. How will I be
able to take care of my mother with this always standing between us?
Annie

Does your local town have a nickname? If so, what does it say about the area and the people who live
there? Many cities are recognized across the world by their unofficial names. New York is the Big Apple,

As well as creating what promises to be a fascinating resource of nicknames, there is a practical side to
the project. “With the huge variety of place nicknames that exist, we could never hope to collect them all
ourselves,” says Glen Hart, Ordnance Survey’s head of research. “But the information from the project could

when somebody needs something before arriving home or at the office. The disadvantages is that people get

Carl Khalid from Saudi Arabia: No. I would recommend if you want to use a cellphone while you’re
driving, pull over and take your time. You will avoid a lot of trouble. There are many advantages of using
cellphones in cars. In emergencies such as accidents, a flat tire or engine problem, the cellphone is useful for
calling 911 for help. Using the cellphone while driving can save time, but using it while driving can also
cause a lot of problems such as missing a red light or signs, not observing cars, or not paying attention to the

Li Mingyang only joined Alibaba’s investment platform one month ago but he has already transferred
(转移) almost all the cash in his bank account – nearly Rmb200,000 ($32,000) – to the online fund. He is
far from alone . More than 30 million people in China have signed up to Yu’E Bao, or “Leftover Treasure”,
only six months since its launch.
Initially as the Chinese e-co mmerce group as a platform for its users to manage extra funds in their
online payment accounts, Yu’E Bao is becoming something far more powerful: a straight-up substitute for
traditional bank deposits (存款).“There’s no point in keeping money in the bank any more. This is just as
reliable, more flexible and you can earn a lot more from it,” Mr Li says.
A quick hit of the Yu’E Bao application on his phone shows the Shanghai-based editor has earned more
interest on his account over the past day than 94 per cent of other local users .“This is fun, almost like a
computer game,” he says with a laugh.
For every Rmb12 that companies and individuals have deposited in Chinese banks since
- 15 -
June, they
placed roughly Rmb1 in their Yu’E Bao accounts, according to Financial Times calculations based on official
data. While it remains tiny compared with total deposits in the Chinese banking system, this transfer of cash
from banks to the Alibaba platform is only speeding up. In the process, it threatens to upend( 颠倒) the rules
of China’s state-protected financial department, break banks’ profit model and shifting power to savers in a
way that was scarcely imaginable at the start of this year.
Other Chinese tech companies are getting in on the act. Tencent, developer of the hugely popular
messaging app WeChat, is said to be designing a fund platform similar to Yu’E Bao. Baidu, the search engine
company, began marketing investment products in October.
“Internet companies, with their ability to instantly reach millions of consumers, have already started to
change the competitive dynamic in finance,” says Ernan Cui, an analyst with GK Dragonomics, a
Beijing-based research firm.
72. In the first paragraph, what does the underlined part ‘He is far from alone’ mean?
A. li Mingyang lives far away from banks.
B. Few people have transferred their money to the online fund.
C. Not so many people have so much money.
D. Many people have done the same as Mr. Li.
73. If Rmb12,000 is deposited in Chinese banks, then how much money will flow into Yu’ E Bao accounts
according to the passage?
A. Rmb 10 B. Rmb 100
C. Rmb 1,000 D. Rmb 10,000
74. As Yu’ E Bao has become so powerful as a platform for its users, what other Chinese e-commerce groups
will do in the future?
A. They think there’s no point in keeping money in the bank any more.
B. They will transfer all their money to the online fund.
C. They will make their companies more state-protected.
D. They will also design online platforms and throw themselves into such dynamic finance.
75. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the e-commerce gr oup as a platform for its users to manage payment
accounts?
A. objective B. not so promising C. negative D. troublesome

任务型读写
Although everyone has a creative side and a logical side, some people find it a challenge to get in
touch with their creative side. Being creative means bei ng prepared to think of new and original ways to do
things. Here are some ways to help you get in touch with your creative side.
When you want to be creative, it’s very important to relieve any tension from your body so that your
mind can be open to new experiences and not be occupied with dealing with tension or stress. It’s possible to
relax very quickly if you take three or four deep breaths. In the relaxed state you pick up a pen and start to
write down all the potential ways that you could take to achieve what you want. You might find that you
would like to use paints instead or a musical instrument to express your new found creativity and explore
where it leads you.
Once you are fully relaxed, you can begin to think about the project you are attempting to complete
and allow your mind to wander over various possibilities rather than immediately going for the obvious
logical way to do it. Close your eyes and ask yourself what ways there might be to solve your project and
notice the scenarios ( 设想) which appear in your mind as you do this. You may notice pictures, sounds or
emotions or a combination of all three. Then imagine yourself moving into the scenario that you are thinking
about and then discover what might or might not work for you and others. Be aware of any emotions that
come up when you visit the various scenarios. Keep a notebook handy to write down your experiences and
insights as a result of your visualization (可视化). .
It’s easy to dismiss unusual or different solutions which you haven’t tried before but it’s important to be
prepared to experiment and play with them. Sometimes what is needed is just doing something even if you
are uncertain of the potential outcome. People often think of all the possible ways that something won’t work
and as a result they dismiss the idea of performing an experiment to see what would happen. The reality is
- 15 -
that we can't foretell the future, so it’s useful to plan for it in a creative and exciting new way.

参考范文:
Dear editor,
With the College Entrance Examinations approaching , the students of Senior Three are
focusing much more on studying. Many of them even begin to stay up studying. A heated
discussion was held to argue about the advantages and disadvantages of it.
Some students have their own reasons for studying late into night. Firstly, the quietness in the
- 15 -
night will result in better effectiveness. Besides, the examinations are only 200 days away so it's
high time they made good use of every minute. What’s more, seeing others studying so hard, they
will feel anxious if they don’t take action.
Some others, however, hold the opposite view, saying that a sensible senior student must know
how to balance his time between study and leisure. As everyone knows, staying up late will
naturally affect the next day's performance in class.
As far as I’m concerned, different people have different habits. If you can hold it, it’s your
own business when to study and when to sleep.
Yours
