Seattle, Washington, may be called “Rain City”but its snow makes it famous. On January 12,2013,Seattle residents(居民)set the Guinness World Record for the largest snowball fight. More than 5,800 people showed up to throw snowballs at one another at the Seattle Center.
It didn’t snow in Seattle on that day,but there was snow in a small corner of the city—enough to make a lot of kids’ dreams come true.Trucks transported 34 loads of snow from Snoquahnie Pass to the Seattle Center.It took 162,000 pounds of snow to build the winter wonderland.
The event,which was called “Snow Day”,was organized by Seattle businessman Neil Bergquist,also the fundraiser(筹资者)for the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County.He spent three months organizing the playful activity.He wanted to raise money for kids “by remembering what it was like to feel like a kid.”
Although people in Seattle weren’t used to snow,they succeeded in getting enough people to come out and play.About 6,000 tickets were sold online and there were 130 judges for the official snowball fight.
A Guinness official said there were 5,834 people taking part in the activity.Seattle beat the earlier world record of about 5,400 at a 2010 snowball fight in South Korea.
“We had a lot of fun,set a Guinness record,raised some money for kids,and everyone had a chance to act like a kid for a day,” Bergquist said.

During the Winter Olympics in Sochi,25,000 volunteers from Russia and other countries provided services for athletes and guests.The student Oksana Verkholyak helped translate Russian into English and Korean at the Games.She told us about their usual day.
“We get up at 7:30 in the morning.Then we have breakfast.Usually we have porridge for breakfast.There is always tea,coffee,bread and pies.After breakfast,we head for a bus stop and get on a bus which runs to the media centre.It takes us 30 minutes to get there,” she said.

In the evening volunteers got back to the apartment buildings.All of them were like one big family.They lived together and got some rest together—after dinner they went to the beach to watch the sunset.
Not only students helped organize the Sochi Olympics.There were many so-called silver volunteers who retired(退休)but didn’t lose interest in sports.Some of the volunteers had an experience working at the Olympic Games in other countries and even at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
