Mum, it’s me. Hopefully, this Mothering Sunday you will get to hear those three words. I will try to
- 10 -
phone you. I hope we will be able to speak for the allowed 10 minutes. But if I can’t, this is what I want to say:
It’s not your fault that I am here. I know that deep in your heart you have questioned whether my current circumstance is somehow your fault. It is not. Only one person is to blame — me. You have always taught me that when the room goes dark, you can wait for the lights to be switched on or you can search in the dark and turn the light on yourself. You are my light, always have been and always will be. There is nobody I have strived harder to please in my life, which is why my current failure hurts me so much.
I am so sorry that I will not be there to see you, but now, as always, you are here with me. A parent’s job is to make sure that they pass on the best of themselves to their children. You have done that. I shed tears when Dad left. You held me and you told me we’d be OK, and we will be.
Childhood heroes such as footballers, actors and rock stars are clichéd. You are mine. The strength you showed after the divorce from Dad to find your biological parents, to go to university and get your teaching qualifications, to begin your life again, is the strength that I draw on now. Once I am released I can and will rebuild my life. I will make you happy to have me as your son.
So this Mothering Sunday, please think back to the first Mother’s Day, when a six-year-old me got up early and made breakfast for you. Do you remember it? You didn’t have to eat it, but you did, chewing every dry mouthful.
I love you so much. I am sorry I have let you down, but you have taught me that we will always pick ourselves up and become better than we were before. Thank you for everything. Happy Mothering Sunday.
Love, your son

Plastic bags that can help bread and cheese remain fresh for a long time have been developed by scientists. The technology, which uses chemicals that prevent bacteria and fungi (真霉) from growing, allows food to last longer. It could put an end to throwing away supermarket bread after just a couple of days in the bread bin and cheese that goes mouldy (发霉的) after just a few weeks.
The company, Janssen, has spent two years developing the technology with the plastics manufacturer, Symphony Environmental. The technology could also be used to make credit cards and the new plastic bank notes more hygienic (卫生的). Tests have shown that the plastic can increase the shelf life of bread and cheese without letting the food go bad. Michael Stephen, director of Symphony Environmental, said the plastic also has the potential to do the same for fruit,
- 10 -
vegetables and even meat.
In Britain, around 15 million tons of food is thrown away each year, mostly because it has spoiled or gone bad. Bread is the most wasted food, with families throwing away 4.4 million tons a year — about a third of all the bread purchased by UK families.
The technology, which is called D2P, fixes antibacterial and antifungal chemicals to the plastic. They have found it can control bacteria which can cause food poisoning. It can also control the growth of fungi on bread and others.
Mr. Stephen added, “Initially we expect that it is only used in pipes and door handles, for example, to help reduce the spread of bacteria. It can also be put into man-made fibers so we are doing some experiments to put it into clothes to stop the bacteria that can cause them to smell.”
64. The author mentioned the problem in Britain in Paragraph 3 to ________.
A. prove the popularity of bread B. scold the behavior of the British
C. show the short shelf life of bread D. describe the serious situation
65. D2P technology can be applied to the following aspects EXCEPT ________.
A. pipes B. bins C. credit cards D. meat
66. What would happen if people use the plastic bags produced by Janssen?
A. The sales of bread and cheese would increase sharply.
B. Food wrapped in plastics will never go mouldy.
C. Bread and cheese could be kept for a longer time.
D. Vegetables and meat stored in these bags will be more hygienic.
67. It can be inferred from Mr. Stephen’s words that ________.
A. more daily uses for this technology will be available in the future
B. man-made fibers should be improved with the adoption of this technology
C. they are doing a series of experiments on food wrapping and clothes smell
D. people’s preference for this technology cannot be expected

Vanessa Brown, a senior lecturer of art at Nottingham University, explores the cultural and psychological relation between sunglasses and our modern idea of “cool.” Her research has uncovered about why most of us look better in shades.
Because they really make your misshapen face look better. Put on a pair of sunglasses, and an instant beauty as a result of balance! The dark lenses cover up any unbalanced oddities around your eyes, and research on facial attractiveness shows a clear link between balance and our sense of beauty.
Because of mystery. Many of the quick judgments we form about people come from looking in the eyes; shade yours, and you’re instantly a more attractive presence. Eye contact helps us form judgments about someone’s intelligence, confidence, and sincerity and sunglasses keep us literally in the dark about forming those perceptions. And it works both ways, because the wearer of the sunglasses feels more mysterious, too.
Because of their historical link with sharpness and attraction. We take their existence for granted today, but sunglasses are relatively modern, Brown said. Sales started to pick up in the 1920s, but they didn’t become commonplace until about two decades after that. The way sunglasses were most used prior to their commercialization helps explain their inside coolness, Brown said, because in their early days sunglasses were primarily used during risky water and snow sports, which made
- 10 -
them seem “daring and thoroughly modern.”
Soon after that, Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 1960s started wearing sunglasses to defend themselves from being recognized by the public or bothered by paparazzi, whose flashbulbs would often explode violently, Brown said. Anyhow, movie stars’ adoption of them strengthened a sense of romance. Also—and this is more from my own personal research than Brown’s—hang-overs. They’re really great for hiding hang-overs.
68. The writer believes that Hollywood stars prefer to wear sunglasses _________.
A. to escape the flashbulbs of paparazzi
B. to avoid being recognized by the public
C. to be more attractive and romantic
D. to hide their hang-overs
69. Which of the following would Vanessa Brown agree with?
A. Sunglasses cover up unbalanced oddities on the face to give people a sense of mystery.
B. Sunglasses deliver mystery to the observers as well as the wearers.
C. Sunglasses are relatively modern and they became commonplace in the 1920s.
D. Sunglasses were mainly used in risky sports after their commercialization.
70. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?
(①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2 ③=Paragraph 3 ④=Paragraph 4 ⑤=Paragraph 5)
71. Which one would be the best title of this passage?
A. Sunglasses are Cool B. Mystery and Beauty
C. Look Better in Shades D. Attractive Sunglasses

I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century American, I like it. But this fixation on productivity is increasingly destroying character.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressures, and it weakens thinking about character and morality.”
Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks said, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”
A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand
- 10 -
relationships, emotions and all things spiritual.
To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human natures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.
72. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ________.
A. are eager to achieve more B. are destroying their character
C. are keen on reading books D. are rigidly controlled by time
73. Paragraph 4 is mainly developed by ________.
A. making comparisons B. following the time order
C. giving examples D. analyzing causes
74. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. love is more important than tasks
B. the focus on human natures counts
C. success comes from devotion to work
D. more work contributes to happiness
75. The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. stress the importance of productivity
B. raise awareness of character building
C. warn about the pressure to seek success
D. criticize students’ desire for achievements
