Many years ago, while three-year-old Louis Braille was playing with an awl in his father’s
workshop in France, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes. He immediately lost sight in that eye.
Soon, germs got into his wounded eye and spread to his other eye. In a couple of years, Louis went
completely blind.
When he was ten, he attended a school for blind boys in Paris. One day, a soldier came to
visit. The soldier knew a special code that was used in war. It was called “night writing”, which
had twelve raised dots. Using these special dots, soldiers could pass secret coded messages without
speaking. They ran their fingers over the dots and found out the meaning of the words even in total
darkness.
Young Louis realized that this could be a way for blind kids to read. Later, he reduced the
number of dots from twelve to six and made many other improvements. Still, his special code was
not accepted by others. But Louis didn’t give up and he worked on it all his life.
After his death, his dot reading code caught on. It was soon being used everywhere to teach
blind children to read. They could now use their hands to feel the dots, which gave them a new
freedom to read. Today, this reading code is named after young Louis. It’s known as Braille.

Sunday is the final day of freedom. And it is the last chance to catch your breath before
another busy week begins. Growing up in Singapore and spending a number of years in Britain,
I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Sundays in both countries. How different they are!
“Sun”-day: Friend or enemy?
One can easily tell Sundays in Singapore from those in Britain by looking at the relationships
each country has with the sun.
Singapore is a tropical island with rainy and dry seasons. When it rains, it’s hot. When it
shines, it burns. This is why Singaporeans prefer to spend their time indoors. These days, indoor
activities like trampolining (蹦床) are getting popular among young people. They don’t hate the
sun, but they don’t like it very much either.
In Britain, however, sunny days are few and people try to make use of them as much as they
can. While I was making my way to the library one Sunday, I met a group of college students
outside, being bathed in the sun as they wore their beach clothes. I wish I could have joined them.
Sunday roast
This is one of the most British things about Britain. It happens every weekend, usually in the
late afternoon. It is a meal with roasted meat, roasted potatoes and roasted or boiled vegetables.
Of course, we eat lunch and dinner in Singapore on Sundays. But the “British Sunday roast”
isn’t just about the food. It’s also a time to get together with family and friends.
One way or another, whether you prefer trampolining or sunbathing, Sundays in either
country do have their own special charm.
27. The first paragraph tells us Sunday means ____________.

C. starting a nice week D. becoming busy soon

A. They do indoor activities like trampolining.
B. They often go to the library and enjoy reading there.
C. They try to make use of sunny days and have fun.
D. They just go out and eat lunch or dinner alone.
