I am sure we’ve all come across inspiring quotes that made us nod in agreement

or made us think, “Wow, that’s good quote”. But we end up going back to procrastinating (拖延) on whatever it was we were procrastinating on. So are these inspirational quotes even worth reading? Well, that depends.
Quotes, books, articles, audio programs… all of these things are just tools and they’re only effective when you use them. I don’t know about you but most quotes I read don’t do anything for me. However, every now and then, I will come across one that will positively affect me in some way such as reminding me to be grateful, getting me to work out extra hard at the gym without being pressed by my wife, or never give up when things get tough.
From my experience, reading quotes is more effective when you’re actually trying to motivate yourself rather than just reading them for the sake of reading them. The second you feel the urge to take action, you’d better immediately get up off your chair and take action.
These quotes aren’t for everyone. If you have read tons of them and have never been motivated or had a positive change in the way you look at life or how you treat others, or these quotes don’t help you to insist on doing something when you feel like giving up on it, then it’s probably not worth your time reading more of them. If you have done something a bunch of times and it’s not giving you the results you want, don’t keep doing it. Try something else.

Five or six years ago, I attended a lecture on the science of attention. A professor who conducts research over in the medical school was talking about attention blindness, the basic feature of the human brain that, when we concentrate on one task, causes us to miss just about everything else. Because we can’t see what we can’t see, our lecturer was determined to catch us in the act. He had us watch a video of six people tossing (投掷) basketballs back and forth, three in white shirts and three in black, and our task was to keep track only of the tosses among the people in white. The tape rolled, and everyone began counting.
Everyone except me. I’m dyslexic (患阅读困难症的), and the moment I saw that tape with the confusing basketball tossers, I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep track of their movements, so I let my mind wander. I became curious, though, when about 30 seconds into the tape, a gorilla (大猩猩) walked in among the players. She (we later learned a female student was in the gorilla suit) stared at the camera, beat her chest with her fist, and then went away while they continued passing the balls.
When the tape stopped, the professor asked how many people had counted at least a dozen basketball tosses. Hands went up all over. He then asked who had counted 13, 14, and congratulated those who’d scored the perfect 15. Then he asked, “And who saw the gorilla?”
I raised my hand and was surprised to discover I was the only person at my table and one of only three or four in the large room to do so. He’d set us up, trapping us in our own attention blindness. Yes, there had been a trick, but he wasn’t the one who had played it on us. By concentrating so hard on counting, we had managed to miss the gorilla in the midst.
Attention blindness is the fundamental organizing principle of the brain, and I believe that it presents us with a great opportunity. My take is different from that of many neuroscientists: Where they see the shortcomings of the individual, I sense an opportunity for cooperation. Fortunately, given the interactive (互动的) nature of most of our lives in the digital age, we have the tools to control our different forms of attention and take advantage of them.
It’s not easy to admit that everything we’ve learned about how to pay attention means that we’ve been missing everything else. It’s not easy for us logical, intelligent, confident types to admit that the very key to our success — our ability to discover a problem and solve it, an achievement obtained in all those years in school and beyond — may be exactly what limits us. No one ever told us that our way of seeing left out everything else.

Holly was confused as she opened the gift from her best friend, Susan.

I thought I was well prepared. However, hard work was just not enough. It couldn’t be more depressing when I stared at my low rank, my mind going blank. But my pride didn’t allow me to appear weak. So I stayed locked away, refusing to talk to anyone.
Fortunately it wasn’t long before I realized what I was doing was actually hurting those who cared about me and doing myself no good, so I went to seek help from my parents. With them motivating me, my depression faded away. Now I have the confidence to win the battle in my Senior Three and face any difficulty in life.
一、评分原则
1.本题总分为30分,按5个档次给分。
2.先根据文章的内容和语言初步确定其所属档次,然后以该档次的要求来衡量、确定或调整,最后给分。
3.应注意的主要方面为:内容要点、应用词汇和语法结构的丰富性和准确性以及上下文的连贯性。
4.词数少于100,从总分中酌情扣分,最多扣2分。
5.拼写与标点符号是语言准确性的一个方面,应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑。英、美拼写及词汇用法均可接受。
6.若书写较差,以至影响交际,将分数降低一个档次。

第五档(25~30分)
完成试题规定的全部任务。

第四档(19~24分)
完成试题规定的主要任务。
·覆盖所有主要内容;
·应用的语法结构和词汇能满足任务的要求;
·语法结构或词汇方面应用基本准确,些许错误主要是因尝试较复杂语法结构或词汇所致;
·应用简单的语句间连接成分,使全文结构紧凑;
·达到了预期的写作目的。
第三档(13~18分)
完成试题规定的部分任务。
·虽漏掉一些内容,但覆盖部分主要内容;
·应用的语法结构和词汇能满足任务的要求;
·有一些语法结构或词汇方面的错误,但不影响理解;
·应用简单的语句间连接成分,使全文内容连贯;
·整体而言,基本达到了预期的写作目的。
第二档(7~12分)
未恰当完成试题规定的任务。
·漏掉或未描述清楚一些主要内容,写了一些无关内容;
·语法结构单调、词汇有限;
·有一些语法结构或词汇方面的错误,影响了对写作内容的理解;
·较少使用语句间的连接成分,内容缺少连贯性;
·信息未能清楚地传达给读者。
第一档(1~6分)
未完成试题规定的任务。
·明显遗漏主要内容,写了一些无关内容,原因可能是未理解试题要求;
·语法结构单调、词汇有限;
·较多语法结构或词汇方面的错误,影响对写作内容的理解;
·缺乏语句间的连接成分,内容不连贯;
·信息未能传达给读者。
