A
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow...He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.
12
Time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day. One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. “Come and play with me!” the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid. I don’t play around trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. “Come and play with me.” the tree said. “I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, but I don’t have a house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunks to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy, but I don’t have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you....”The tree said.
“I don’t have teeth to bite,” the boy replied.
“No more trunk for you to climb on.”
“I am too old for that now,” the boy replied.
“I really can’t give you anything... The only thing left is my dying roots,” the tree said with tears.
“I don’t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” the boy replied.
“Good! Old tree root is the best place to lean on and rest. Come and sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears....

A Chinese-born patient at a hospital in New London, Conn., had her medical insurance claim rejected because nurses put down her husband’s last name when she was admitted of her own. A simple cultural and linguistic misunderstanding caused the confusion: in China, women don’t normally change their names when they get married. Asian-American also faced problems when they went to vote in the U.S. presidential election.
And as booming markets in Asia increase in importance, new insight is required to break through what you could call a language barrier. It is estimated that 900 million people worldwide can tap into Web-based information sources and consumer sites, a rate expected to double in the next two years. Most of these users do not speak English, and over 250 million reside in Asia, according to Global Envision.org. English-speaking nations are much closer to the saturation(饱和状态) point when it comes to Internet use, so non-English-speaking nations represent the majority of future growth.
E-commerce depends on language, too. According to a Common Sense Advisory survey, 52% consumers will only buy something from a Web site in their own language.
To be sure, passing information through systems designed by people speaking different languages and using different writing systems can increase the level of weakness to translation errors.
Some Asian writing systems, such Chinese Hanzi and Japanese Kanji, are not based on an alphabet the way English is. The usual computer algorithms(一种程序语言), matching a letter to a sound, don’t apply. Complicating matters further for Anglocentric systems, most characters in China and Japan have multiple pronunciations. In China, for example, where a number of different dialects are spoken, the same character can be pronounced in numerous ways. The result is that when a Chinese name is written in the English alphabet, it may be spelled in completely different ways.
Besides, in China, Korea and Japan, for example, family names come before first names, exactly opposite to the practice in most Western countries. To meet these challenges, information technologies must be smarter, beginning at the design of data intake processes
12
and throughout record storage and linkage. Software and systems must be able to adapt quickly for use to preserve linguistic and cultural diversity.
50. The writer quoted the example of the Chinese-born patient to _________.
A. describe a medical accident B. express his/her sympathy
C. present the article’s topic D. share his/her unique view
51. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “reside” in Paragraph 2?
A. develop B. speak C. use D. live
52. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Most e-ecommerce consumers come from English-speaking countries.
B. With many dialects, the same Chinese character can be pronounced differently.
C. There will be 900 million Web users worldwide in the coming two years.
D. All characters both in China and Japan have multiple pronunciations.
53. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. information technologies should be improved to a certain degree
B. systems designed specially can help decrease the translation errors
C. the usual computer algorithms basing on a letter to a sound is practical
D. All of Asian-Americans will fail to vote after their getting married
54. The passage is mainly about _______.
A. cultural and linguistic differences B. the growth trend of E-commerce
C. the technology language obstacle D. the influence of the East in future
D
Living in South Africa, I had always taken the wildlife pretty much for granted. Not to say that we were surrounded by it, but the accessibility of game parks and wildlife sanctuaries(避难所,庇护所) always made it seem like a natural part of the environment. For this reason, I suppose that the way my European friends used to talk to me, wasn’t so strange after all. They would ask me what I thought at the time were really silly questions which got on my nerves. They’d say things like ‘Do you have a pet baboon (狒狒)?’ or ‘Do you travel to school by elephant?’.
When Amanda, a friend of mine who was visiting from England, invited me to join her and a group of friends on a wildlife expedition, I was not filled with enthusiasm. However, from the moment we entered the gates of the Zaluzi game reserve, I knew that this was not going to be anything like I had expected. We had been traveling along the National Road when, suddenly, we turned onto a dirt track which seemed to be hidden in the middle of nowhere. Amazingly, the scenery changed dramatically. The civilized environment took on a wild, chaotic(混沌的) aspect and continued to do so as we walked deeper into the bush.
After having a good night’s sleep at one of the reserve’s houses, we were woken at the crack of dawn. After a quick breakfast we piled into a jeep and set off. Our guide assured us that the early start was necessary in order to have the best chance of seeing what was really worthwhile. Armed with just a thermos (热水瓶) of coffee, we set out towards the shore of a small lake where it was expected that we could see that animals that used it as their morning watering hole.
12
On the way to our destination, we topped a hill and there, against the emerging morning light, were a group of animals. It was a stunning sight. As we moved closer, the animals did not appear to be alarmed by our presence. Pet baboons aside, I had never before come within such close range of a pride of lions. It did cross my mind, however, that we might be in a certain amount of danger. When I asked Timothy, our game ranger, if we were actually in any danger, he replied straightforwardly that one is never entirely safe in the bush, but his knowledge and experience allowed him to anticipate any danger with reasonable accuracy.
However, the following day there was some cause for alarm. Not having started out so early, we missed the sightings of the day before. We decided to drive around for a while, hoping to come across something of interest. Suddenly our tracker perched up on the back of our vehicle, signaled to the driver to halt and at the same moment I realized that this time we had stumbled right into a pride of lions. The driver promptly turned off the engine and in a low voice warned us to remain seated and not to make any abrupt (突然的) movements. The lions were picking at what looked like the remains of a zebra. Timothy, later told us how much to our advantage this was. Had their bellies (胃) not been full, their reaction to us would surely have been otherwise. As the nearest lion was less than three meters away from the jeep, I considered that we had been very lucky indeed.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip. Our near miss with the lions was without a doubt the highlight, but what it taught me yet again was how easy it is to be indifferent to our surroundings and not to have a full appreciation of the beauty around us.
55. How did the writer feel about the questions her European friends asked?
A. ridiculous B. annoyed C. strange D. embarrassed
56. When did the writer’s attitude change about the expedition?
A. When she was traveling along the dirt track.
B. When she received her invitation.
C. When she arrived at the game reserve.
D. When her friend arrived from England.
57. What does the underlined word “It” (in the fourth paragraph) refer to?
A. the morning light B. the destination
C. the top of the hill D. the pride of lions
58. Timothy’s experience as a game ranger was valuable because he ______________
A. could supply a straightforward answer to any question.
B. knew how to frighten the animals.
C. knew the game reserve well.
D. could identify trouble in advance.

A. They had seen the lions up close. B. They hadn’t been attacked.
C. They had a good guide with them. D. They had gone on a trip.
60. What conclusion does the writer of the text come to?
A. We often do not realize how attractive our environment really is.

12

A. Track Your Page Count
B. Keep a Record of Your Time
C. Team Up and Read Socially
D. Take Advantage of Technology
E. Set a Goal to Encourage Yourself
F. Treat Yourself in One Way or Another
How to Train Yourself to Read More
Between work, a social life, your family, television and the Internet, it can be difficult to find time to read more. Reading is important, however, for a range of reasons: It improves cognitive (认知) ability, enriches vocabulary, helps with spelling and increases general knowledge. Just having an intention to read more won’t guarantee you actually do it, though. You need a series of strategies, exploring a way to train yourself to read more.
61. ___________
You don’t need expensive training programs or software to train to read more; all you really need is a timer. Consider how much free time you have in a day, then set aside part of that time for reading. Make sure this is a feasible (可行的) goal——start small, say, 30 minutes. Each day, use your timer and read for the amount of time you set. After a week, increase your time. The increase doesn’t have to be much, perhaps an additional 15 minutes. As weeks go by, continue adding the same small amount to your reading time. Before you know it, you’ll be reading for two or three hours per day.
62. ___________
Before you begin training to read more, take a week or two to measure how many pages you read on average per week. Once you’ve gotten an idea of your baseline reading amount, increase it slowly. Try to read at least an additional 5—10 pages per week. You’ll probably be able to sneak these pages into your normal schedule without too much effort. You could, for example, read when you find yourself waiting or during meals if you’re alone. Or you could try turning off the television a little earlier each day. Keep track of how many pages you’ve read each week so you can see your progress.
63.____________
Technology doesn’t have to be the enemy of the written word; in fact, you can make use of your electronic devices. Invest in an e-reader, if you can, or use a tablet to read books. This will save you having to carry around a heavy book, and because you can put multiple books on an e-reader or tablet, you’ll always have plenty to read. You can also load books onto your smart phone so that you can read when you have a few spare minutes.
64.____________
Although you might begin training to read more with excitement or enthusiasm, these can
12
quickly disappear if you don’t devise a method of rewarding or motivating yourself. These rewards don’t have to be large or expensive. You could reward yourself with something, such as chocolate or a small gift, each time you hit a reading goal, whether this is number of pages or amount of reading time. Or, if you’re feeling charitable (有善心), donate a small sum of money to your favorite cause each time you hit your goal.
65.____________
Reading is mainly an individual activity, but there are social sides you can tap into to keep you motivated to read more. Join a local book club, and if your library or town doesn’t have one, start your own. Share with other book lovers or learn more about your favorite books by joining sites such as Goodreads, PaperBack Swap or BookLamp, if you decide to participate in websites for book enthusiasts. However, be sure that your reading time isn’t eaten up by surfing the Internet.

书面表达范文
Praise has a great effect on humans. I have greatly benefited from praise. When I entered high school, I was not good at English. My confidence was destroyed by several failures in English exams. Then came the turning point. Our English teacher asked us to prepare a speech to be delivered in class. I spent much time writing and reciting a speech that I was satisfied with. In that class, I made such a successful speech that I won the praise of the teacher and the whole class. That praise motivated me to learn English with confidence and perseverance. Without that praise, I wouldn’t have made much progress in English and be what I am now.
Proper praise is an essential part in motivating people to make progress, which give people power to hold on to what they are doing. What’s more, it’s fairly clear that both people’s self esteem and confidence are given a huge boost when they receive praise. So please give people recognition for a job well done.
