Not long ago, I answered a telephone call from an old friend who I’d not heard from for a long time.
“Hi, my good friend,” said the voice on the end. “I just wanted to see how you’re getting along.”
At the end of the conversation, he said, “If you need me in any way, I’ll be happy to help out.” And he meant it! That call came at just the right time. I needed those words of encouragement. I hung up the phone and felt very warm in my heart.
And that day I relearned something important about life: Life is first
13
about people, not plans, not to-do lists and a million tasks left undone—it’s about people.
To love and to know that we are loved is the greatest happiness. And happiness seems to be something that is in short supply for too many of us! My friend reminded me that it is never enough just to love; we must also express it.
George William Childs put it like this: “Do not keep the box of your love and friendship closed up until your friends are gone. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be made happier.”
Happiness may be just a phone call.

More and more parents leave their home and come into the big cities to make money. But their children can’t go with them because their children must go to school in their hometown. They are called home-left children.
13
The problems of home-left children become more and more serious. And it becomes a big burden of our society. The first problem is that some home-left children become very lonely without parents’ love. And they are too young to tell right or wrong in many things. So they are fooled very easily by others.
Xiao Mei, a 14-year-old girl, is a home-left child. Her parents are all in Shanghai. She is in her hometown with her grandpa. She likes playing games on the Internet. Her parents and grandpa only give her money and food. They seldom care for her studies. One day, she had no money to pay for the games in the Net bar. So she stole some money from her neighbor. Just at that time, Xiao Fang, a 9-year-old girl saw it. Xiao Mei was afraid that Xiao Fang would tell others about it. She cut Xiao Fang’s throat with a knife, then she cleaned the blood on her hand and went to school just like nothing happened. Xiao Fang was saved by the doctors. When she opened her eyes and wrote the fact to the policeman with a pencil, everybody was very surprised. This sad story reminds the parents to care for their children no matter how busy they are.
Are you one of the home-left children? What do you want to need from your parents? Food, money or love? I think most children need love mostly. Let’s care for the group together.

Tornadoes(龙卷风) are one of the most fierce weather events on earth. Each year, tornadoes kill many people. The storms often carry homes, cars and trees from one place to another. And they can also destroy anything when they pass by.
A tornado comes from a thunderstorm in the sky down to the ground. It is wide at the top and narrower at the bottom.

These storms can happen any time of the year. But most happen from late winter to the middle of summer. There is a second high season in November. During spring, warm air moves north and mixes with the left cold air from winter. In November, the opposite happens. Cold weather moves south and mixes with the last of the warm air from summer.

Hundreds of years ago, a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots, a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.
One night, the leader of Scots led his soldiers to the top of a hill. “We will rest here tonight, my men,” he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.” They were all very tired, so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they were very tired too, and one by one, also fell asleep.
The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the food of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a sharp plant. He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country. The sharp plant is not beautiful. It has needles all over it. Few people like it. But the people of Scotland liked it so much that they made it their national flower.
