American cities are similar to other cities around the world: In every country, cities reflect the values of the culture, American cities are changing, just American society is changing.
After World War II, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Belt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cites where population moves to and from the city reflect the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, city residents became wealthier. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs.
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in 1950s are now adults. Many unlike their parents want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals are moving into the city. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there, or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. Countless poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again.
26. Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War II?
A. Because cities contained the worst parts of society.
B. Because they were richer and needed more space.
C. Because older American cities were dying.
D. Because they could hardly afford to live in the city.
27. What does the author think of cities all over the world?
A. They are similar. B. They are different.
C. They are alive. D. They are hopeless.
28. The underlined word ‘shift’ (Para. 4) probably means ‘____’.
A. explosion B. growth C. change D. reduction
29. According to the 4th paragraph, a great many poor people in American cities____.
A. are faced with housing problems B. are forced to move to the suburbs
11
C. want to sell their buildings D. need more money for daily expenses
30. We can conclude from the text that ____.
A. American cities are changing for the worse
B. many people are now moving from American cities
C. people have different views on American cities
D. the population is decreasing in older American cities

It’s not easy being a teenager-- nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him if he should seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy (隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager to have his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part- time job.
36. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ____.
A. how to get along with a teenager B. how to understand a teenager
C. how to help a teenager grow up D. how to respect a teenager
37. What does the phrase ‘clam up’ in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. become excited B . refuse to talk C. show respect D. seek help
38. The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager ____.
A. to use the phone in a sensible way B. to pay for his own telephone
C. to share the phone with friends D. to answer the phone quickly
39. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text?
A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.
B. Give him advice when necessary.
C. Let him have his own telephone.
D. Not talk about personal things with him.
40. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about teenagers?
A. Health. B. Safety. C. Privacy. D. Study.
D
