A credit card that won’t work unless its owner’s voice is heard may become an important weapon in the fight against economic fraud(欺诈).
The card using a built-in voice-recognition chip requires users to give a spoken password that it recognizes. The idea is to prevent thieves from using a stolen card to buy goods online.
A model built by engineers in California packs a microphone, a loudspeaker, a battery and a voice-recognition chip into a standard-sized credit card. The card is the length and width of an ordinary credit card but about three times as thick. The company now plans to make it thinner.
The voice card is based on an earlier Beep card technology designed to prevent fraud in online deals. The Beep card has no microphone, but has a built-in loudspeaker to utter an audible (听得见的) ID signal by a computer’s microphone to an online server(服务器). By confirming that signal matches the information in the card, the server can make sure that the user is not simply keying in a credit card number but actually has the card in his hand. The ID code, which only the server knows, changes each time the card is used.
This prevents fraudsters recording the beeps, noting the card details and then playing back the audible ID when they key in the details later. But this earlier Beep card technology cannot prevent illegal use of stolen cards. The new voice card can. The new voice card doesn’t identify itself by its ID until it has confirmed the real user’s spoken password. Thieves will be unable to use the card because even if they knew the password they would have to be able to copy the owner’s voice with a high degree of accuracy. The challenge for Beep card has been to develop voice-recognition and audio circuitry(声音电路).
The voice-recognition credit is powered by a mini battery. To extend batter life, the electronics have only to be switched on when the card is being used. Pressing a button on the card’s surface allows one to hear a female voice saying, “Say your password.” If the voice-recognition software proves that the password is real, it sends its ID, which the server then identifies, allowing the deal to continue.

Creative conservationist (环保者) Asher Jay is a designer, artist, writer, and activist who is trying to save the world’s most threatened wildlife with an unusual weapon: Art.
“Today we need everyone’s involvement, not just core conservationists,” says Jay. “ People with no previous interest in conservation tune in to my messages because they engage with my work aesthetically. It starts as an interest in art for art’s sake and ends with making lifestyle changes.”
The New York-based artist has become a visual voice for a range of environmental causes. In Africa, screen savers glow with Jay’s graphics of a Poached rhino horn dripping with blood. Jay’s cartoons of elephants killed for their tusks have been shown in New York’s Times Square, wild other works have spread worldwide on social media.
“The right image can overcome language and cultural barriers, connecting with people on a non-verbal, emotional level,” she says. “It all starts with making an emotional impression on one person. Only then will someone change habits, speak out, or donate.”
In recent years, much of Jay’s best known work has focused on the illegal ivory trade.
In 2012, she created a silk screen print, showing a stark image of an elephant’s head silhouetted in black, dripping with red blood, and accented by a tusk decorated with images of elephants’ families. “Every tusk costs a life,” said accompanying text. “Stop poaching.”
“I wanted to visualize the scale and brutality of the crisis and use art to tell the blood ivory story,” she says. "Every year, 35,000 elephants are slaughtered; that’s one every 15 minutes.”
“Two-thirds of Africa’s elephants have been killed for tusks in the last 35 years. If this continues, experts predict elephants in the wild will be extinct in less than ten years.”
Much of Jay’s work around poaching aims simply to correct a widespread misunderstanding. “Many people think an elephant’s tusk or a rhino’s horn simply falls off, like losing a tooth. My goal,” she says, “is to make them understand that elephants die painful deaths, because they are alive and conscious as poachers cut out their tusks.”

After my sixth voyage I was quite determined that I would never go to sea. One early spring day, however, I was brought to see the Caliph. He said, “Sindbad, I have chosen you to deliver a letter and a gift to the King of Serendib in return for his message of friendship."

He said, "My brother, these wild elephants have killed numbers of our slaves every year. You alone have escaped; therefore you must be under the special protection of Heaven. You deserve your liberty, and I will give you a fortune."

Start with the hardest task of your day.
Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. Whatever it may be, make it the first thing you do. If you start your day this way you will feel relieved. And the rest of the day — and your to-do list — tends to feel a lot lighter and easier to get through.
Just make a decision. Any decision.
We feel bad when we sit on our hands and don’t take action, because it’s unnatural. The natural thing is to be a decisive human and take action.
What you do always sends signals back to you about who you’re. Say to yourself that your confidence can help you. When you procrastinate you lower your self-esteem and send signals back to yourself that you are an indecisive person.
Face the fear.
Procrastination is the fear of success. People procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. It’s harder to just take action. To risk looking like a fool. To make mistakes stumble and not avoid that pain. To take responsibility for your own life.
Finish it.
Much of the stress that people feel doesn’t come from having too much to do. It comes from not finishing what they have started. Not taking the first step to start accomplishing something can make you feel bad. But not finishing what you have started can also leave you in a sort of negative fear.
If that is the case, go over the tasks and projects that you are currently involved in. Is there something that you know you want to finish, but haven’t yet done so? Try to finish it as soon as you can, and you will start to feel a whole lot better. Just be careful. Don't think you have to finish everything you have started.

M: No, thanks. We’ve got sodas at home.
W: So, that’s going to be to go, right?
M: That’s right.
W: OK. Your total is $17.
M: Here’s a twenty. Keep the change.
W: Oh, thank you so much! You are Number 255. Your order should be ready in about five minutes.

W: It looks like we’re pretty close, but these smart phone maps are hard to read.
M: Yeah, I always prefer to look at a paper map. I think I still have some in the pocket of the right door, if you wanna grab one…
W: No, I’d probably be even worse at that. Uh-oh, I think you were supposed to turn left back there.
M: You mean that you were supposed to tell me to turn left back there?
W: Yeah, I’m sorry. I don’t have one of these kinds of phones, so I’m afraid I don’t really know what I’m doing. Do you want to pull over and take a look?
M: No. It’s okay. Just push that little button on the side of the phone to turn on the sound. That will allow us to hear the directions out loud.

M: Yeah. I love all the funny videos that people post.
W: Have you ever seen the YouTube show Epic Meal Time(《超级开饭时间》)?
M: Uh, no. I didn’t know YouTube had shows. I thought it was only home videos and music videos…stuff like that.
W: Well, YouTube also has channels, just like regular TV. There are many different kinds of shows every week. Most of them are shorter and cheaper to make than regular TV, though.
M: YouTube is even cooler than I thought! So, what’s Epic Meal Time?

W: There’s a group of guys who make the unhealthy meals they can possibly cook. Everything has bacon on it. Most things are fried, and there is a ton of cheese on everything. We’re talking tens of thousands of calories in one meal! In this show, the main guy introduces the meal, and then you see them shopping for the ingredients. You watch them cook everything. And at the end, they all eat it with their friends!

W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?
M: Sure. What’s up?
W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.
M: Oh, is everything all right?
W: Yes, of course. It’s not like he’s sick or anything. I give him medicine every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn’t get any diseases from insects or other dogs.
M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.
W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy your dog’s medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost dropped dead right there!
M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices that are set by the companies that make them. You can usually find discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.
W: Well, that’s not a huge help for something that’s two hundred dollars per year! Isn’t there any other way?
M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in other countries where the prices are lower.

This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o’clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately.
Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o’clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible.
