When I was ten years old, my mother determined to lead us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians (古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.
10
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn’t stop looking at this painting! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
21. The aim of the mother’s plan was to _________.
A. take them to visit the museum
B. ask them to read about artists
C. introduce them to the world of art
D. show them different painting styles
22. What was the writer’s experience in the museum before the last visit?
A. She came to feel her mother’s love.
B. She hardly enjoyed herself.
C. She liked many paintings.
D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.
23. What made the writer go through a change that summer?
A. A strange way of painting.
B. One of Mary’s paintings.
C. Artists in the Middle Ages.
D. Her mother’s instruction.
24. From the text, we can see _________.
A. the effect of art
B. the importance of curiosity
C. the value of learning
D. the power of family education

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的) about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of working hard at school.
B. Choosing a career according to one’s strengths.
C. How to face one’s weakness.
D. The value of school work.
29. The writer thinks that a student have a part-time job is probably ___.
A. a good way to find out his weak points
B. one of the best ways of earning extra money
C. of great use for his work in the future
D. a waste of time he could have spent on study
30. From the passage we learn that if a student’s school performance is not good, he _______.
A. should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
B. will be regretful about his bad results
10
C. may also do well in his future work
D. should restart his study in school
31. The underlined phrase “be all thumbs” (in para 3) probably means “_______”.
A. be clumsy at doing things
B. be skillful in doing things
C. be not interested in certain things
D. be easily bored in doing things
D
You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or a creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering.“They”are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as“they”are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing (内化) your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的) moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺) in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have a fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
32. What does the word“they”in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. People and things around you. B. Opportunities and problems.
C. Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings.
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Creators and victims face quite different things in life.
B. Creators and victims are masters of their lives.
C. Victims can influence more people than creators.
D. Compared with victims, creators are more emotional.
34. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that __________.
A. strong attachment to (沉浸在)sufferings in life pulls people into victims
B. people need family support to deal with challengers in life
C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains
D. one’s experiences determine his attitude toward life
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To define victims and creators.
B. To evaluate victims against creators.
10
C. To explain the relationship between victims and creators.
D. To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.

During the summer holiday, my parents and I paid visit to my grandparents by train. There was a large number of people and the train was crowded, but everyone helped those who had lots of baggages and behaved politely. Along the way, we enjoyed beautifully views. At first, we saw one hill after another. Then which came into view were fields with green crops. After a six-hours trip, we arrived at my grandparents’ house. Exhausted though I felt, but I was happy to see my grandparents, whom I haven’t seen for a long time. It’s really an exited trip because it was the first time that I had taken so a long-distance train.

作文
Dear Editor-in-Chief,
Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of Global Mirror!
I’m a regular reader of your newspaper. I like it very much mainly for the following two reasons. First, it covers both national and international news so that, by simply turning the pages, I can learn all important things that have happened during the week. Equally attractive are the success stories of world-famous people, which help me understand how a person can work hard to make the world a better place.
As a young student, I suggest that Global Mirror carry articles to guide us in our English learning, and I hope that it will become even more popular.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
