Many studies have been conducted to discover the benefits of listening to and playing music. The growing field of “music treatment” is presenting increasing amounts of proof that point to the great powers of music.
Emotional (情绪) benefits.
The right song can put anybody in a better mood. Most people turn to certain songs to improve their moods. The main reason behind this is that music can express our feelings better than any other medium. In addition,we have favourite songs for particular situations because we turn to the music which has the best effect on us.
Music and exercise.
Have you ever noticed that how out of breath you get when listening to an exciting song while doing exercises at the gym?It has been suggested that exciting music can actually increase muscle tension (肌肉紧张),while light music does the opposite.
It has also been proved that music can improve motor skills. An experiment conducted on a group of pupils proved that children learning basic motor skills such as throwing, catching and jumping while listening to music did better than those with no music.
Relief (减轻) of chronic (慢性的) pain.
Music also has the ability to ease chronic pain.In fact, according to a paper published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, music can reduce chronic pain by 21%.The paper reports that 60 patients in an experiment were divided into two groups—one of the group listened to music, and the other did not.The results showed that people who listened to music for an hour each day for a week improved physically and psychologically while those who did not listen to music did not.

Music is an international language. The songs that are sung or played by instruments are beautiful to all people everywhere.
Popular music in America is what every student likes.Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch.Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the streets.
Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, politics, and activities of the American people. Most of the radio broadcast is music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in every state.Once the popular singer is heard throughout the country, young people buy his or her tapes. Some of the money from these tapes comes to the singer.Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her.Now the singer has become a national star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans.Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching.Today, any music about country life and the love between a country boy and his girlfriend is called western or country music.
Serious music for the concert halls is called classical music.Music for instruments is called orchestra music (管弦乐),such as the symphonies (交响乐) of Beethoven. There is opera (歌剧) for singers. There is ballet (芭蕾舞剧) for dancers like the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai in China.

When someone says,“Well,I guess I’ll have to go face the music”,it does not mean that he is planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that.Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced.Where does this expression come from?
One explanation comes from the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the expression was first used by actors while waiting to go on stage. After they got their cue to go,they often said,“It’s time to go face the music.” And that is exactly what they did—face the orchestra which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved onto the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out.If he did not, there would be no play.
So,“to face the music” come to mean having to go through something,no matter how unpleasant the experience might be,because you know you have no other choice.
Another explanation comes from the army. When a man is forced out of the army because he did something unacceptable,he is dishonored. The band does not play.Only the drum tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave facing the music.
64.A child has to face the music when ________.
