Ask any student which subject he or she hates most. 9 out of 10 students will answer “ 26 ”. No matter which country you live in, no matter which grade you are in, you may not have to study art, geography or Chinese, 27 you must learn maths. Why is that? Why do so many students hate maths, and yet have to learn it at school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student from California, 28 , “What good do we get from learning maths? We can use computers to compute numbers. I think learning maths at school is a waste of 29 .”
However, there is much more to maths than just learning to compute. 30 , maths is not so much about calculation (计算). Instead, it is more about learning to think logically (有逻辑性地) and 31 problems. Of course, Jenny is 32 that we can use computers to compute numbers, but how could we even know 33 to use the computer if we can’t think logically? Computers are only tools when we solve problems.
For example, 34 you must make dinner for 100 guests. How should you divide your resources (分配资源) so that you can 35 the job well? In situations like this, the ability to think logically will get you to a good answer and solve your problem.

I’m Bolivia Williams, a student at Bard College. I was the only person in my family who was Facebook friends with my mum, Rynn, when she died four years ago. At that time, my brother and sister were still young. As soon as we got the news that she died, I posted (发帖) on Facebook, “Rest in peace Mum ...” I thought it would be an easy way to let everyone know what happened. Right after I posted the news, so many people offered their help and shared stories about her.
I like to visit my mum’s page to tell her things that I’m doing and I like to look at her pictures there. I sing with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus (合唱团), and we did a concert for the tenth anniversary (周年纪念日) of 9/11, which was also my mum’s birthday. It was an unforgettable (难忘的) day. I posted, “You will be proud of me — I will sing at the site of the World Trade Centre tomorrow. I know you will be looking down, smiling.” When I’m writing to her, it feels like I’m still with her.
At first, I wasn’t sure how to face my mum’s death. But I’ve grown up now. I haven’t been on my mum’s page for a month, but I would miss it if it were gone. Her page allows me to think that she’s still here.
I used to go to my mum’s page to look at her pictures, which would make me feel really sad. Now, when I visit it, I smile more often than cry.

Jessi remembers that when she and Joey first started staying home alone, they weren’t allowed to open the door for anyone or invite any friends to their home. Now Jessi’s allowed to invite over any friend that her mum knows well.
Every family has different home alone rules. Here are some common rules:
“Closed door” policy (原则)
•Don’t open the door for anyone except a brother, sister or parent.
•Keep all doors locked, at all times.
Checking in
•When you get home, call your parents to let them know that everything’s OK.
Phone calls
•Only pick up the phone if it’s a parent, relative, or friend who your parents know.
•If you answer the phone and the person asks for a parent, just say that he or she is busy and can’t come to the phone. Never tell a stranger on the phone that you’re home alone!
Snacks
•If you feel nervous about using appliances like the oven, you may have some snacks instead of (代替) cooking food yourself.
Visiting friends
Most children have a rule that no friends are allowed in the house when they’re home alone. This may be no fun but in the end, is safe for everyone.
Staying inside
Your parents may want you to stay at home and not go anywhere — not even a friend’s house, park, or store.
No Internet
Many parents, including Jessi and Joey’s mum, ask their children to wait until a parent is home before going online.
These rules are very important. Follow them when you’re home alone.
