New York, London, Paris and other big cities are interesting places to live in. There are always many nice things to see and to do. You can go to different kinds of museums, parks or cinemas. You can also buy things from all over the world.
But there are some serious problems in big cities, too. It is expensive to live there and there are also too many people. Every year many people move to the cities to find work, to study at good schools. But sometimes these people cannot find work or good places to live in. So it is hard to keep the cities safe and clean.
Some people enjoy living in big cities, others do not. So before moving to a big city, you must think about the problems of living there.

As Mrs Thompson stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped(萎靡的)in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs Thompson noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold Xs and then putting a big “F” at the top of his papers.
However, when She reviewed his file, she got a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners.., he is a joy to be around.”
His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a
struggle. ”
His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken.”
His fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.”
Now, Mrs Thompson was ashamed of herself and felt worse when her students brought her beautifully wrapped Christmas presents. Teddy's present, however, was clumsily wrapped in rough brown grocery paper. Taking her time she opened it to reveal Teddy's gifts, a rhinestone bracelet (手镯)with stones missing and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume(香水). How the children laughed! “What a pretty bracelet! Mm, lovely perfume! Perfect on my wrist.” The children were silent.
Alone together, after school, Teddy told Mrs Thompson, “Today you smelled just like my Mom used to...” His teacher cried all night and, from that day, she stopped teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic and began to teach children instead.

When I was learning calligraphy (书法), my teacher told me a story.
A calligrapher taught handwriting. One of his students who often practiced handwriting with old sheets of newspaper complained that he made very little progress though he had learned it with the calligrapher for a long time. His teacher said to him, “Try to use the best paper. Maybe you'll write better.”
The student did as he was told. It really worked. He made headway not long afterwards and felt curious. He asked his teacher about the reason. The calligrapher answered, “When you used old newspaper to practice handwriting, you would think you were writing a draft. It didn't matter if you wrote badly as old newspaper was plenty in supply. In that case you wouldn't pay much attention to it. Now you use the best paper and you'll treasure it. Each time you write you feel strongly about the rarity of chances and you'll devote to it with all your heart and soul; you'll do the handwriting much more attentively than practicing. Of course you've made rapid progress.
Indeed,we spend our ordinary days just as they are worthless “old newspaper”. We don't care if we scrawl and waste it, thinking that it will come endlessly—the “old newspaper” is inexhaustible(无穷无尽的). In such a mood we may each day pass by opportunities but fail to catch any of them.
Life is not a military(军事的)exercise but an actual war in which real weapons are used. In everyday life there's no chance for us to draft. That's because what we call “draft” actually is the answer sheet we write that cannot be changed.
Every day of our life is something new. Let us take every day as a sheet of the best paper.
25.The calligrapher in the story told the student to write on the best paper because he
thought________.
A.the student would practice more carefully on the best paper
B.it was comfortable to write on the best paper
C.the student had enough money to buy the best paper
D.the student could write more on the best paper
26.The student didn't make much progress at first because ________.
A.he didn't follow his teacher's advice
B.he was too poor to buy better paper to write on
C.he regarded his writing on old newspaper just as a draft
D.he was not used to the calligrapher's teaching manner
27.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.What teachers say is always true.
B.Success calls for attentiveness.
C.Handwriting is easy to practice.
D.New things are always better than old ones.
C
For me, my great moment came when I actually decided to accept an opportunity to teach English in Shanghai. There were times when I almost gave up because of fear. But in the end I came here.
Last summer, a Canadian-Chinese woman who teaches in Shanghai just happened to come to the place where I was working in the Seattle area. We talked and I said I had always wanted to teach abroad. She said, “Come to our school.” “Okay,” I replied, but I wasn't sure if I meant it.
We met later for coffee. She answered all of my questions about the school, and gave me the website address and the email address of the person to contact. It took six months for me to finally decide on the job.
First of all, in Shanghai there are many western places to eat western food and lots of interesting things to do. Also, there is a great subway system with directions and stops posted in English. Finding your way around is a challenge in a new place. But that isn't hard here. Taxis are very cheap; you can always jump in one and get home. There are also a lot of westerners in
Shanghai, so it is fairly easy to ask for directions. Young Chinese people are much more likely to speak English and they are wonderfully helpful.
I earn almost $1,000 per month and live in a nice rent-free apartment. My biggest expense (开销) has been food as I am a vegetarian (素食者) and also on a diet. I still have not got used to the traditional Chinese food, but if you like it, you'll be in heaven.
Here I have a good place to live in, new friends, a high salary, and a good job. In the US, getting a job at my age has been next to impossible for a woman.

根据第一段第二句的“There were times when I almost gave up because of fear.”以及第三段的最后一句“It took six months for me to finally decide on the job.”

A.there are no good restaurants for the writer in Shanghai
B.the writer sometimes feels lonely in Shanghai

A.is satisfied with her weight
B.doesn't have to pay for rent
C.doesn't like eating vegetables
D.is crazy about the traditional Chinese food

It's good to get_along_with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
It's also good to get along with your teacher because, in general, it's smart to learn how to relate to the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life.
But really, there's one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher. When you do, “learning bursts right open,” says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column called “Teacher Says” for the Washington Post newspaper.
In fact, kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they're also more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do the best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to when you have problems, such as problems with learning, school issues, or bullying.
As a kid in elementary or middle school, you're at a wonderful stage in your life. You're like a sponge(海绵), able to take in lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, you're able to think about all this information in new ways. Remember teachers are people too, and they feel great if you're open to what they're teaching you. That's why they wanted to be teachers in the firstplace—to teach!
In every school, kids will say certain teachers are tough. In fact, in most cases, your teacher wants to help you. And a teacher who's called tough may be someone who feels strongly about getting his or her job done—teaching you what you are supposed to learn.
32.In the passage, the author mainly talks about ________.
A.how to get along well with teachers
B.the importance of a good relationship with teachers

A.it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant
B.it's smart to learn how to relate to the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life
C.they're also more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help
D.they can get more presents from the teacher

A.cruel and critical

答案:
Dear teacher,
As your student, I'd like to give you some suggestions on behalf of all my classmates.
First, I want to say I love you. And I want to tell you that the smile on your face in English class gives us confidence. Then, we think we will love you more if you make your lessons more lively and more interesting. Also, we think that we are all excellent and hope to be more often praised by you. What's more, we'd like you to give us some reasonable suggestions instead of orders. Finally, as you are always working very hard, it is quite important for you to learn to have a rest and take care of yourself!
Best wishes to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
