Text 10
Visitors to Switzerland usually include Basel in their list of cities. It has a population of over 350,000, the majority of whom speak German. However, it is considered a kind of international city, because it stands right at the point where three countries meet. Many visitors go to the place in the city where threesided marker says France on one side, Germany on another, and Switzerland on the third. The Rhine which divides the city, becomes wide and deep enough just at this point for ships to sail all the way up to the North Sea.
Basel is quite an old city too, having risen in importance five centuries ago. The University of Basel was founded in 1460, and is still wellknown today.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detectorbot. It's about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions(作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.
This robot has a high definition 360 degree panoramic(全景) camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr. Qi Juntong, Chinese Academy of Science, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn't need a distant control. We just set the destination(目的地) information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. ”
This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector(探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40centimeterlong robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10 meter long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earth quake rescue team as soon as next year.

When I was 16 years old, a boy gave me an important gift. __36__
It was the early autumn of my first year at a junior high school, and my old school was far away. __37__ I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
Every time I listened to other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart break. I couldn't talk about anyone with my problems. And I didn't want my parents to worry about me.
Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, but I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. __38__ I didn't know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me, with a smile on his face.
Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm.
__39__ I started to talk with other students and made friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now!
__40__ I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think it lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back.
A. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom.
B. He's living in Australia now and he loves it.
C. It doesn't matter because all the dark days have gone.
D. It was a smile.
E. That smile changed my life.
F. It's practically impossible to make friends here.
G. As a result, no one knew who I was.
He looked at me, with a smile on his face他脸上带着笑容,看着我。 So smile at the world and it will smile back对世界微笑,世界就会对你微笑。
I didn't know who he was可知有一个男孩进入了教室。故选A。
It made me feel happy, lively and warm.

Last Sunday I saw a worst storm in years. It came sudden and went on for over three hours. After lunch, I went into my room to have a rest. The air was hot, but all was quiet. Then a strong wind started to blow into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew high into the air and some flew out the open window. As I ran out to catch it, big drop of rain began to fall. When I come back into my house, it was raining more harder and harder. Then I heard a loud sound from the back of the house. When I ran out of my room to find out that had happened, a big tree had fallen down and broke the top of the backroom.

答案:
Dear John,
I'm glad to read the post on the Internet that you welcome students who like English. I'm interested in it and want to join the club.
My name is Li Hua, a student from Xin Hua No. 1 Middle School. I'm Chinese. I like English very much and have won prizes in English speech contest. I think I'll make full use of the chance to practice my English, such as communicating with others in English and helping organize activities for the members. I'll also make friends with students from different countries, so we can learn from each other to improve my English. I hope I'll be accepted as a member of the club.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
