Julius is a 15 year-old Kenyan, with his feet in his country and his eyes on the West. He wears jeans and a baseball cap to school. He loves watching American films on TV. His elder brothers hang out (闲逛)after work in places like the Hard Rock Cafe. Julius’s brother Paul says, ‘The music is cool, it’s not too expensive and it’s the place where I can meet all my friends.’
Julius is lucky because his parents have enough money to send him to school. Many children in Kenya do not go to school because their parents are too poor to pay for schooling.
Kenya, like many countries in East Africa, has a lot of problems. There is very little industry and farmers do not receive high prices for their crops. Half the people in the capital Nairobi live in slums (贫民区) where whole families crowd into a single-roomed hut. In the north of the country the situation is worse. The rains have failed for several years and the people have not enough food.
It is a young country. Almost half people are aged under 15. Many people there have been hit hard by AIDS. Because the country is poor, it cannot pay for the expensive medicine that can control AIDS.

Automobile
Automobiles were originally developed in Europe. German engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz built the first successful gasoline engines in 1885. After 1900, however, the United States became a leader in automobile production.
The first cars were handmade and very expensive. Only people in rich cities could afford them. The first company to make gasoline cars in the U.S. was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. Then, in 1901, Ransom E. Olds Began mass-producing his car, the Oldsmobile. In 1913 Henry Ford made great strides in the mass production of cars by using an assembly line in his factory. Mass production meant that each car was less expensive to make. Now car ownership was affordable for the average person. By 1916 there were more than one million cars in the United States.
The automobile gave people the freedom to travel anywhere there were passable roads. Families that lived great distance apart could travel by automobile to visit each other. People could visit places they had never seen before.
Before the mass production of cars, people lived close to work. Their means of transportation included walking, riding a bicycle, using a horse and carriage, or taking a train. The automobile gave people the ability to live farther away from work. The result was that gradually people moved out of the cities to the less crowded suburbs.
The automobile industry created millions of jobs. The jobs were not just in the auto factories, where the cars were assembled. Workers were needed to make auto parts, run gas stations and repair shops, and work at new motels and restaurants that served people who traveled by car. Jobs became available at car rental companies. People were needed to build roads. These jobs and many others still exist because of the automobile.

A small city in southwest Britain is banning(禁用) plastic bags to help the environment and cut waste—a step that environmentalists believe is a first for Europe.
Shopkeepers in Modbury agreed to stop handing out disposable plastic bags to customers on Saturday. They said paper sacks and cloth carrier bags would be offered instead.
Last month, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban plastic grocery bags. Internationally, laws to discourage the use of plastic bags have been passed in parts of South Africa and Ireland, where governments either tax （收税） shoppers who use them or fine companies that hand them out. Bangladesh already bans them, and so do at least 30 small Alaskan villages.
Modbury, about 225 miles southwest of London, has also declared a bag amnesty(宽限期), allowing local people to hand in plastic bags that are kept at home. They will be sent for traveling.
The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca Hosking, who saw the effect of bags on sea life while he works in the Pacific as a wildlife camerawoman. She said response(反应) in the town so far had been “really positive”

Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”
Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have. Try being honest, and notice how well it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that: In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.
At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.
It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit (储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.

The English Fashion recently asked people about their wonderful ideas and plans about things they could do. The magazine asked people the following question, “If you had all the money you
wanted, what would you like to do?” About 500 people answered the survey question.
Almost half (49%) of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a better car. One fifth (20%) of the people said they would travel to interesting or famous places. 17% answered that they would give money to someone else. “USA? British? Which country is better to study in?” We often hear such discussion. As China opens its door, studying abroad has become a dream for many Chinese students. They want to learn about the world.
It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Language skills will improve and it may be easier to find a job.

Nowadays more and more people care about the exploitation(开采) of the natural resources, such as oil. One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by sending newspapers door to door, was so hungry that he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe (欠…债) you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” With these words, Howard Kelly left that house.
Year later the woman became badly ill and as finally sent to the hospital in a big city. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Dressed in his doctor’s clothes, Dr. Kelly went into her room and recognized her at once. From that day on, he gave special attention to her, and decided to do his best to save her life.
At last the woman was saved. Dr. Kelly asked the business office to pass the final bill to him. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay for it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. When you cut your skin, you bleed(流血). If a person loses a lot of blood, he will become ill and may die. Blood is very important. People have always known that. At one time, some people even drank blood to make them strong!
When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body, they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to people who need it. This is called “blood transfusion”(输血). The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.
But there are two problems. First, it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusion. Later, doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups—O, A, B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They also find that they can give any kind of blood to people of group AB. But they find that they must give A-group
blood to A-group people and B-group blood to B-group people. I have O-group blood and the doctor told me that I could give blood to anyone else safely.
There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind, doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they cannot find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it, they can always have the right kind of blood. At first they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. They do this by making it very cold. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time.
We call a place where we keep money a “bank”. We call a place where we keep blood a “blood bank”. One day, when you grow up, you may decide to give blood to a “blood bank”.
