He loves watching American films on TV. His elder brothers hang out (闲逛)after work in places like the Hard Rock Cafe. Julius’s brother Paul says, ‘The music is cool, it’s not too expensive and it’s the place where I can meet all my friends.’‎ Julius is lucky because his parents have enough money to send him to school. Many children in Kenya do not go to school because their parents are too poor to pay for schooling. ‎ Kenya‎, like many countries in East Africa, has a lot of problems. There is very little industry and farmers do not receive high prices for their crops. Half the people in the capital Nairobi live in slums (贫民区) where whole families crowd into a single-roomed hut. In the north of the country the situation is worse. The rains have failed for several years and the people have not enough food. ‎ It is a young country. Almost half people are aged under 15. Many people there have been hit hard by AIDS. Because the country is poor, it cannot pay for the expensive medicine that can control AIDS. ‎ Julius is worried about his future. ‘I don’t know what I will do when I leave school. There are very few jobs for young people.’ He would like to work with computers on the Internet, maybe start up an Internet cafe. However, there are several problems with this. The computers are v ery expensive. Next the electricity supply does not run all day every day. Finally, the telephone connections are not very good, and sometimes Net signals are lost. ‎ ‎4. Which of the following is true?‎ ‎ A. All children in Kenya go to school ‎ B. Many children’s parents are as rich as Julius’s. ‎ ‎ C. Schools are free in Kenya. ‎ ‎ D. Julius’s parents can pay for his schooling. ‎ ‎5. Why have many people got AIDS in Kenya according to the passage? ‎ ‎ A. Because there is little industry. B. Because whole families live in a small hut. ‎ ‎ C. Because half people are aged under 15. D. The country is too poor to control the disease. ‎ ‎6. How many problems does Julius need to solve if he start up an Internet cafe? ‎ ‎ A. Two. B. Three. C. One. D. Four. ‎ C ‎ Automobile Automobiles were originally developed in Europe. German engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz built the first successful gasoline engines in 1885. After 1900, however, the United States became a leader in automobile production. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The first cars were handmade and very expensive. Only people in rich cities could afford them. The first company to make gasoline cars in the U.S.‎ was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. Then, in 1901, Ransom E. Olds Began mass-producing his car, the Oldsmobile. In 1913 Henry Ford made great strides in the mass production of cars by using an assembly line in his factory. Mass production meant that each car was less expensive to make. Now car ownership was affordable for the average person. By 1916 there were more than one million cars in the United States. ‎ ‎ The automobile gave people the freedom to travel anywhere there were passable roads. Families that lived great distance apart could travel by automobile to visit each other. People could visit places they had never seen before. ‎ ‎ Before the mass production of cars, people lived close to work. Their means of transportation included walking, riding a bicycle, using a horse and carriage, or taking a train. The automobile gave people the ability to live farther away from work. The result was that gradually people moved out of the cities to the less crowded suburbs. ‎ ‎ The automobile industry created millions of jobs. The jobs were not just in the auto factories, where the cars were assembled. Workers were needed to make auto parts, run gas stations and repair shops, and work at new motels and restaurants that served people who traveled by car. Jobs became available at car rental companies. People were needed to build roads. These jobs and many others still exist because of the automobile. ‎ ‎7. The first gasoline cars that were produced were ________. ‎ ‎ A. very affordable B. very expensive ‎ C. mass-produced D. bought by many people ‎8. The rise of the automobile industry ___________. ‎ ‎ A. destroyed many jobs B. made travel more difficult ‎ C. created many jobs D. had no effect on suburbs ‎ ‎9. Cars that were mass-produced __________. ‎ ‎ A. made people move to the cities B. were bought by only a few people ‎ ‎ C. made nature enjoying more difficult D. were possible for more people to afford ‎10. Before the automobile was mass-produced, people traveled in the following ways except A. by airplane. B. on foot. C. by horse and carriage. D. by bicycle.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ D ‎ A small city in southwest Britain is banning(禁用) plastic bags to help the environment and cut waste—a step that environmentalists believe is a first for Europe. ‎ Shopkeepers in Modbury agreed to stop handing out disposable plastic bags to customers on Saturday. They said paper sacks and cloth carrier bags would be offered instead. ‎ Last month, San Francisco became the first U.S.‎ city to ban plastic grocery bags. Internationally, laws to discourage the use of plastic bags have been passed in parts of South Africa and Ireland, where governments either tax (收税) shoppers who use them or fine companies that hand them out. Bangladesh already bans them, and so do at least 30 small Alaskan villages. ‎ Modbury, about 225 miles southwest of London, has also declared a bag amnesty(宽限期), allowing local people to hand in plastic bags that are kept at home. They will be sent for traveling. ‎ The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca Hosking, who saw the effect of bags on sea life while he works in the Pacific as a wildlife camerawoman. She said response(反应) in the town so far had been “really positive”‎ ‎“Modbury is quite an old—fashioned city and a lot of people have wicker baskets to go out shopping anyway,” Hosking told Sky News Television. ‎ The Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research agency, states that 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year in the United States alone. More than 500 billion are used yearly around the world. ‎ 11. What does the underlined word “disposable” in the passage mean? ‎ A. acceptable B. throw—away C. long lasting D. valuable ‎ ‎12. It can be inferred from the passage that _____________. ‎ ‎ A. most of the people in Modbury continue to use plastic bags ‎ B. most countries in the world have passed laws to ban plastic bags ‎ C. fewer and fewer plastic bags will be used in the world ‎ D. San Francisco is the first city to ban plastic bags in the world ‎ ‎13. Which of the following may be the best title of the text? ‎ A. British Cities Banning Plastic Bags B. Some Cities Banning Plastic Bags C. Effect of Plastic Bags on Sea Animals D. Hiroyuki's bed will solve your problem! Here is how it works. ‎ The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music. The tape recorder in Hiroyuki's bed plays a recording of his girlfriend. She whispers in a sweet voice, “Wake up, darling, please.” A few minutes later, Hiroyuki hears a recording of his boss. His boss shouts, “Wake up at once, or you'll be late!” ‎ If you don't get up after the second recording, a mechanical “foot” in the bed will kick you in the head. The bed waits a few more minutes. What? You're still in bed! Slowly the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally you slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are out of bed and awake! ‎ Hiroyuki's bed is not in stores. There is only one bed - the bed Hiroyuki made for a contest. Maybe someday a company will make Hiroyuki's bed and sell it in stores. Maybe people will buy millions of beds. Then Hiroyuki will be rich. If the bed makes Hiroyuki rich, he won't need to go to work, and he won't need to get up early! ‎ ‎4. The bed is useful to the people ________. ‎ A. who can't sleep well B. who can't get up early ‎ C. who go to bed early D. who go to bed late ‎ ‎5. The bed is not connected to ________. ‎ A. an alarm clock B. a tape recorder C. a TV D. a mechanical foot ‎ ‎6. The word “whisper” in the second paragraph means “________ ”. ‎ A. speak loudly B. speak sadly C. speak angrily D. speak quietly ‎ C New rules and behaviour standards for middle school students came out in March‎ ‎Middle School is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't dye(染)their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules. ‎ Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else's work on an exam? Don't do it again! That's not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you have done homework. ‎ Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone. ‎ Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself. ‎ Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you'll discover Earth II someday. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone. ‎ Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know. ‎ Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can't you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some: ‎ http://kids.eastday.com. ‎ http://www.chinakids.net.com ‎ http://www.cycnet.com ‎ ‎7. The school new rules will help kids by telling them ______. ‎ A. how they can study well B. what they should do at school ‎ C. what is right and what is wrong D. how they can protect themselves ‎ ‎8. According to the passage, which of the following is not true? ‎ A. Keep some animals to protect them. B. Tell the truth, even when you are wrong. ‎ C. Take care of yourself when you are out.‎ ‎ D. Use the Internet, but keep away from bad things. ‎ ‎9. Good Web sites for children can ______. ‎ A. be a waste of time B. make life easier C. do homework for them D. help them with their studies ‎ D Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”‎ Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have. Try being honest, and notice how well it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that: In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.‎ At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.‎ It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit (储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.‎ ‎10. The black words “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “______”.‎ ‎ A. to be honest B. to be unreal ‎ C. to become clear D. to come from an imagined world ‎ 11. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?‎ ‎ A. Be your true self rather than follow others.‎ ‎ B. Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.‎ ‎ C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.‎ ‎ D. Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.‎ ‎ 12. What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?‎ ‎ A. Honesty can be of great help. ‎ B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one.‎ ‎ C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.‎ ‎ D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.‎ ‎ 3. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express ______.‎ ‎ A.one must be brave to be honest ‎ B. it’s difficult to be honest when others are not C.one should be honest when making a deposit D. honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future 答案 A ABD B. When she got in the third grade, her marks were very poor because her teacher, Miss Mennis, couldn’t understand Ella’s terrible handwriting. Then Miss Mennis forced Ella to write with her right hand. She even stood over poor little Ella and made sure that the pupil wasn’t using her left hand.‎ When Ella got in the fourth grade, she had a much younger teacher, Miss Kindred. She gave pupils handwriting exercises. One day, she asked Ella to stay in the classroom after class. Ella thought Miss Kindred was going to punish her because of her bad handwriting. Miss Kindred asked Ella to write a few words with her right hand. Then she made Ella write a few words with her left hand. Ella looked up at her when she finished writing, and the teacher had a warm smile on her face.‎ ‎ Miss Kindred gave Ella a writing exercise to take home with a note in an envelope to her father. Ella gave him the note and began doing her homework. Her father watched her while she was writing with her left hand. He praised her, saying she wrote well. Ella became very proud of herself.‎ ‎ Ella started to enjoy writing, and her marks improved greatly. Whenever Ella made an A on her paper, Miss Kindred always put a gold star on Ella’s spelling paper.‎ ‎ In high school, the English teacher sometimes asked the students to go to the blackboard to write something. Ella’s classmates were surprised to watch her left hand move quickly across the blackboard. Sometimes they would laugh, saying: “Ah, look at the Lefty now!”‎ Ella laughed, too. She had confidence within herself. ‎ ‎5. The magazine asked people the following question, “If you had all the money you ‎ wanted, what would you like to do?” About 500 people answered the survey question.‎ Almost half (49%) of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a better car. One fifth (20%) of the people said they would travel to interesting or famous places. 17% answered that they would give money to someone else. They would donate money to a charity or to their families to help poor people. More than half of the rest of the people (about 10%) said they would give money to help medical research. They want doctors and scientists to find cures for terrible diseases, which will help sick people get better. All the other people in the English Fashion survey said they would save money in the bank. They said they didn’t know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money.‎ ‎“Lots of people think that if they buy bigger and better things, they will feel happier,” said Dr. Mary Wilson, a sociologist at City‎ ‎University. “However,” she said, “this feeling will not last long. After a while, they won't be satisfied with them any longer.” Dr. Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who want to make a change in people's lives that will last into the future. She thinks those people who give money to someone else or to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their own needs at the moment. If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world.‎ ‎8. What is the English Fashion?‎ A. A sociology book. B. A magazine. C. A newspaper. D. A TV program.‎ ‎9. After school Bill walked past the shop on the street corner. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have a pair for his birthday.‎ ‎ He sadly walked away and thought of what to tell his mother. He knew she would give him anything if she could. But he also knew she had little money. He decided not to go home at once, as he looked worried and didn’t want to make his mother worry about it. So he went to the park and there he sat on the grass. Then he saw a girl in a wheel chair. He found that the girl moved the wheels with her hands. Look at her carefully and was surprised to see that girl had no feet. Which country is better to study in?” We often hear such discussion. As China opens its door, studying abroad has become a dream for many Chinese students. They want to learn about the world.‎ It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Language skills will improve and it may be easier to find a job.‎ But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language and getting used to a different culture. ‎ Students must also learn to live without parents’ care and deal with all kinds of things they haven’t had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad sinking in an ocean of difficulties and giving up easily. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for the students to study well.‎ Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden(负担) to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad .is very high. But is it worth it?‎ We know that there are many famous people who succeed in great things through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at Athens Olympics. So when you wonder which country is better to study in, consider whether studying abroad in the right choice.‎ ‎8. This passage is mainly about ________.‎ ‎ A. the question of studying abroad B. the dream of studying abroad ‎ C. the choice of studying abroad D. the story of studying abroad D ‎ Nowadays more and more people care about the exploitation(开采) of the natural resources, such as oil. Though there are many kinds of resources, with the fast increase of population and appearance of many more factories, the more we use, the fewer there will be left for the future. Oil is getting less and less year after year. It’s said that oil can last for only 50 years. Natural gas perhaps will last about 38 years.‎ Oil can be used in many ways and it’s difficult to imagine what the modern world will be like without oil. But oil isn’t easy to find and get out of the earth. Men must study the rocks. When they think the rocks in a certain place may have oil, a metal tower is built. A machine in the tower cuts a hole down into the ground. At the same time, a steel pipe(钢管) is pushed down to stop the sides from falling in and to keep out water. At last if the men are right, usually the oil rushes up the sides with great force(力量) by pressure(压力)of the gas in the top of the rock, and it rushes high into the air. If oil catches a light, there will be a terrible fire. So a kind of cover is fixed on the top of the pipe, and the oil can run out through taps(活塞)‎ If we make a well near the middle of the oil field, we can also get gas. Such gas is sent through pipes to towns far away and used in houses and factories like coal gas.‎ Today oil is under pressure as never before. The price of oil keeps rising all the time. In many countries, the governments encourage people to save oil as much as possible.‎ ‎11. The writer wants to tell us ____________.‎ A. we should use the oil carefully B. the oil is easy to find C. we should save oil D. the oil runs everywhere ‎12. People have always known that. At one time, some people even drank blood to make them strong!‎ When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body, they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to people who need it. This is called “blood transfusion”(输血). The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.‎ But there are two problems. First, it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusion. Later, doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups—O, A, B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They also find that they can give any kind of blood to people of group AB. But they find that they must give A-group ‎ blood to A-group people and B-group blood to B-group people. I have O-group blood and the doctor told me that I could give blood to anyone else safely.‎ There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind, doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they cannot find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it, they can always have the right kind of blood. At first they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. They do this by making it very cold. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time.‎ We call a place where we keep money a “bank”. We call a place where we keep blood a “blood bank”. One day, when you grow up, you may decide to give blood to a “blood bank”. In this way you may stop someone from dying. Or perhaps one day you may become ill. You may need blood. The “blood bank” will give it to you. 370words ‎8.
