第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
A few days ago I got a call from my old college friend whom I haven’t seen for a very long time. The topic, which was about all the good old times that we had changed to a touching story when he started talking about his father.
His father’s declining health made him stay at the hospital. Because of his illness, his father suffered from insomnia(失眠) and often talked to himself. My friend, who had not been able to sleep for a few days as he had to keep watching his father’s condition, became irritated and told his father to keep silent and try to get some sleep. His father said that he really wanted to sleep well because he was very tired and told my friend to leave him alone in the hospital if he did not want to keep him company.
After his father finished talking, he fell unconscious. My friend was very sorry for speaking the ill words towards his father. My friend, whom I knew as a tough person, cried as a baby on the other end of the telephone. He said that from that moment on, he prayed every day, asking God to let his father wake up from his coma. He promised himself that whatever words came out from his father’s mouth after he regained his consciousness, he would gladly take them. His only hope for God was to give him a chance to rectify his past mistake.
Often, we complain when we have to accompany or watch over our parents for years, months, days, hours or even minutes. But do we realize that our parents keep us company and watch over us for as long as we (or they)live? From the day we were born to our adulthood, and even when deaths come to us, they are always at our side.
Imagine how sad our parents will be when they hear a seemingly innocent word of “no” come out from our mouths. We can make promises to ourselves that from now on there will be no more complaints that come out from our mouths when we have to watch over or accompany our parents. No more complaints come out from our mouths when we feel that our parents have treated us like little children. There are so many unlucky ones who have neither fathers nor mothers. They long to have the things that we most complain about, but never have them.
Actually, it takes only a second to think and light the lamp that will bring us to a place where peace is dwelling.
56. Which of the following word can be used to describe the writer’s friend?
A. Sad B. Sorry C. Regretful D. Pitiful
57. What does the underlined word “rectify” mean in Para. 3?

B. Be good to your parents when you still have the chance.
C. You will regret in your life if you don’t show your kindness to your parents.
D. It is not easy to take good care of sick old parents.

After successfully serving their terms for 4 years, military service men and women are given the choice to stay in the military or return to civilian life.
For some, having to readjust to civilian life is one of the most challenging assignments our returning soldiers and marines(水兵)will ever to undertake. While people may think readjusting should be simple, they must take into consideration all physical and mental stress our servicemen went through.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder(创伤后应急障碍),or PTSD, is a mental disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as military combat(打仗).
Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time. In the military, the marines are given a two-week course on how to return to civilian life.
Unfortunately, some will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own, or may even get worse over time. These individual may develop PTSD.
People who suffer from PTSD have difficulty sleeping because they are often reliving the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, and feel deserted or often stand off, and these symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly damage the person’s daily life.
Fullerton College, like most colleges, has its own Veteran’s Office. Ray Bustos has been running the office for 3 years. Bustos acts as a liaison(联络) for the school and the veteran students. He makes sure the veterans returning to school get the right benefits. There are various types of financial aid for soldiers and marines. A brand is a name, word, sign, symbol, design, or a combination of these, intended to identify the goods or services of a company or a group of companies. Another purpose of a brand is to contrast one company from another. The most important skill of professional marketers is the ability to create, maintain, protect, and enhance the brands of their products and services. Branding has become so important that today hardly any company or product is without one. Therefore, brand management is an increasingly important element in marketing.
Brand power refers to the relative strength of a company’s brand in the minds of consumers, and can influence consumers’ choice of products. Brands are powerful to the extent that they give high brand loyalty and strong brand associations, name recognition, perceived quality and other assets to a company. A strong brand can be one of a company’s most important assets.
High brand power provides a company with many competitive advantages. A powerful brand enjoys a high level of consumer brand awareness and loyalty. Because consumers expect stores to carry the brand, the company has more bargaining power when negotiating with retailers (零售商). And because the brand name brings high credibility, a company with a strong brand can more easily launch new products with the same brand name.
Many companies use the advantage of a strong brand power strategically to expand their business. When a company introduces an additional item with a new flavour, form, colour or package size in a given product category and under the same brand name, it is called a line extension. Another strategy is called brand extension. This involves the use of a successful brand name to launch new or modified products in a new category, thereby employing brand recognition in order to increase sales of new products.
Brand recognition is certainly important. Because consumers often hold long-standing perceptions about brands, high brand power ensure a company continued sales of its products.
63. What does the underlined word “assets” in the 2nd paragraph mean?
A. points B. advantages C. aspects D. elements
64. All of the following statements are the advantages of a high brand power EXCEPT that______.
A. a high brand wins the loyalty of
consumers
B. a high brand usually sets a much higher price
C. it’s easy for a high brand company to launch new products
D. a high brand company is more competitive when doing business with retailers
65. A brand extension ______.
A. happens when the company is developing a new product
B. means the expansion of a company’s business in its established field
C. takes place when the company introduces a similar item but with a new colour
D. refers to the use of an established brand name to promote a new product in a new category
66. What might be the best title of this passage?
A. Brand Power B. Famous Brands
C. Company Brands D. Brand Products

71 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better scholar if he or she wants to. Here's how :
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide on a good, regular time for studying. 72 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space , which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to work, concentrate on the subject!
Make good use of your time in class. 73 . Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from class, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 74 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help make your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
75 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your study.
B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment
C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.
D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
