It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More
9
often the doctors can’t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.
Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, and then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain’s temperature was 10°C, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.

Camp memories last forever! We make sure they are unforgettable!
Shadow Ridge Summer Camps offer so many exciting things for campers to do. Unlike other camp programs that include horses as a small part of their program, at Shadow Ridge horses ARE the program! We are 100%horse from stable(马厩)management, nature walks, and track rides to bedroom furnishings.
Horses help us achieve many of our aims. Girls can learn to develop responsibility, self-confidence and personal connections in their lives while having fun. Using horses as a wonderful tool for education, our camps offer an interesting place for growth and learning.
Imagine each girl having her very own horse to spend time with and a best friend to love and take care of. Each camper is responsible for a horse for the week. Our riding program provides a lot of riding and lesson time. Campers will learn how to take care of the horse and the tack(马具), as well as how to ride. Days are filled with horse-related activities to strengthen the connection between each girl and horse, as the girls learn to work safely around the horses.
At Shadow Ridge we try to create a loving, caring family atmosphere for our campers. We have “The Bunkhouse” (4 girls), the “Wranglers R
9
oost” (4 girls), and “The Hideout” (2 girls) in our comfortable 177-year-old farm house. All meals are home cooked, offering delicious and healthy food for the hungry rider.
Our excellent activities create personalized memories of your child's vacation; each child will receive a camp T-shirt and a photo album (usually 300-500 pictures) of their stay at camp.
Our camps are offered during June, July and August 2007, for small groups of girls aged 13-16 years, not only from Canada but also other parts of the world.

“WHO KILLED the newspaper?” There is no doubt that newspapers in many parts of the world are having a hard time. In America, where they are in the deepest trouble, the person often blamed is Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, a network of classified-advertising websites that is mostly free to use. Mr Newmark has been called a “newspaper killer”.
The popularity of Craigslist, the ninth most popular website in America, has contributed to a sharp decline in newspapers’ classified-advertising revenue(收入). Sitting in a cafe in San Francisco, Mr Newmark looks an unlikely killer. Did he kill newspapers? “That would be a considerable exaggeration(夸张),” he says with a smile.
The Internet is only one of the reasons for the decline of newspapers in America, which started decades ago. The appearance of television news, and then cable television, attracted readers and advertisers away. Then the Internet appeared in the 1990s. A new generation of readers grew up getting their news from television and the web, now the two leading news sources in America (the web overtook newspapers in 2010 and is already the most popular source among the under30s).
These technological shifts hit American newspapers particularly hard because they heavily rely on advertising. According to the OECD, a club of developed countries, in 2008 America’s newspapers collectively relied on advertising for 87% of their total revenue, more than any other country surveyed. The 2008~2009 recession(衰退) made things worse. Between 2007 and 2009 newspaper revenues in France fell by 4%, in Germany by 10% and in Britain by 21%. In America they plummeted by 30%.
64. Why is Craig Newmark named a newspaper killer?
A. He demands the government to limit the publishing of the newspaper.
B. He calls on people to surf the Internet instead of buying newspaper.
9
C. His classified-advertising websites are seldom free to use.
D. His Craigslist takes away lots of advertising shares of newspaper.
65. How does Mr Newmark think of his nickname?
A. A little reasonable. B. True to the name.
C. Far from the truth. D. A little foolish.
66. Which has the longest influence on attracting readers away?
A. Television news. B. Cable television.
C. The internet. D.Radio news.
67. Which country’s newspaper revenues were least affected by the 2008~2009 recession?
A. Germany. B. Britain. C. America. D. France.
D
Britain’s first commercial flight, powered by biofuel (生物燃料)has taken off from Birmingham Airport. The Thomson Airways Boeing 757 used a 50/50 mix of used cooking oil(地沟油) and traditional fuel.
Thursday 14:25 flight to Lanzarote Spain, with 232 passengers, will only be one-off (一次), to allow a regular supply of oil to be sourced. Thomson Airways said the scheduled flight would use biofuel on a daily basis from 2012. Before then the company hopes the cost of biofuel can be brought down. The flight was fueled with 6,000 litres of processed cooking oil , costing almost£14,000—four times the cost of the jet fuel.
Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport ,said “Someone’s got to be first and when you’re first the experiments tend to be expensive. Once you increase production ,the costs come down and more importantly the emissions (排放)come down.”
The use of biofuels has already been tested by Boeing and several other airlines around the world have recently tried similar flights. In 2008 Virgin Atlantic flew a passenger-less Boeing 747 between London and Amsterdam powered partly by biofuel as a proof of the technology .
Biofuels come from many sources and those from waste products are considered to be some of the most environmental. Environmental campaigners have warned that some plant-based biofuels are responsible for producing even more carbon dioxide emissions than fossil fuels. “We’re going to have to fly less if we want to reduce emissions, there’s no other way around it,”Joe Peacock from Friends of the Earth said.
68. The flight powered by biofuel is only one-off because .
A.the technology still has some problems
B.the cost of biofuel is far higher than traditional fuel
C.it is organized to remind passengers of global pollution
D.passengers are worried about their safety while taking the flight
69. The advantage of the biofuel powered plane is its .
A. high speed B. first-class service
C. great convenience D. environmental concerns
70. Through Paragraph 4, the author wants to show that .
A. Boeing is proved to work well by using the new fuel
B. biofuel powered planes are very popular around the world
C. biofuel powered planes work as well as the traditional ones
D. humans are trying their best to use wastes and make them useful
71. Towards the new technology , Joe Peacock .
A. thinks highly of it B .is against it
C. knows nothing about it D. is doubtful about it

This week is National Volunteer week, a time for the Canadian Red Cross to recognize our dedicated(富有献身精神的)volunteers who devote their time and talents from coast to coast. Over the course of the week we will use this blog
9
to share stories about our volunteers and the amazing work they do—a small part of the outstanding individuals across the country.
Take Saskatchewan for example. Last year that province was hit by wide-spread flooding, a hurricane and forest fires. Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers went to work right away and helped more than 2,100 adults and 775 children recover the basic necessities of life.
It’s important to share stories from volunteers to truly appreciate what they do. Christine Hoffman is a Disaster Response Volunteer in the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan. She’s a veteran Red Crosser for about 16 year. Still nothing could have prepared her for the call she took in the Recovery Center last year in response to flooding in Maple Creek. This story is best told in her own words. This is what she said:
“ I will never forger the first phone call I took in the Recover Center. A young man called asking what services Red Cross was offering in town. As we were talking, he told me he had a rope in his backyard but he thought he would be using it for other reasons. My heart stopped. I told him to come to see us so we could work together on a plan to improve his situation. He came in a little while later. Nearly two hours later he left standing straight up with tear-filled eyes. He thanked me for convincing him to come in. His home had been destroyed, but together we put together a plan and he was eventually able to move back into his own home.”
During National Volunteer Week 2012, let’s thank Christine, and the many other volunteers like her. Thanks for making us proud!
72. According to the second paragraph, Canadian Red Cross’ action is .
A. slow B. quick C. helpless D. disappointing
73.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word“veteran” in the third paragraph?
A. Careless. B. Experienced. C. Unskillful. D. Optimistic.
74. The underlined words in the fourth paragraph expressed Christine Hoffman’s felling of .
A. excitement B. anger C. happiness D. nervousness
75. What can we infer from what Christine Hoffman said?
A. The young man felt sad for Christine Hoffman because of her poor experience.
B. The young man was persuaded by Christine Hoffman and decided to live on.
C. Christine Hoffman made the young man sad and he cried.
D. Christine Hoffman offered to give the young man a little money to help him.

(一)
What the material conveys is totally right all because different people have different opinions about happiness
As far as I am concerned, happiness lies in offering help and love to others. I have a strong belief that where there is love, there is hope. Only when everybody devotes even a tiny love, can our society be warmer and more harmonious. Whatever trouble lies ahead for someone in trouble, I will give him a hand. I do hope that we’re living and will always live in a world full of help and love.
(二)
Dear editor,
I’m a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey-“Who do you turn to when in trouble?” Here are the results.
Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble as they’re almost of the same age, so they have a lot in common and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask them for help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students.
Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.
In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parent, friends or classmates for help.
Sincerely yours.
