A
If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.
41. Someone can’t have a good memory if ________.
A. he can’t read or write
B. he doesn’t use his memory often
C. his parents haven’t a good memory
D. he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time

A. you can’t use them any more

43. Which of the following is TRUE ?
A. Your memory doesn’t work in the same way as your arms or legs.
B. Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance for practice.
C. Don’t learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory.
D. A good memory comes from less practice.

As he was afraid he would forget it, he drew an umbrella on his hand. To his regret, he lost it at the station.

“Wait a minute, sir,” shouted the old woman. “That’s my umbrella!”
Now Mr. Brown noticed that he had taken her umbrella. His face turned red at once and said in a hurry, “Oh, I’m very sorry, Madam! I didn’t mean it!”

Being able to multitask-doing several things at the same time is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.
What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic devices (电子产品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.
Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.
- 11 -
Multitasking also has an effect on young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response (回应). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.
51. What does the underlined word "juggle" most probably mean?
A. want to buy. B. use at the same time.
C. take the place of. D. search information from.
52. In Paragraph 3, the author points out that ________.
A. family members do not greet each other
B. family members do not eat at the family table
C. young people get on well with their families
D. young people hardly communicate with their family members
53. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Young people must learn skills for future jobs.
B. Young people benefit (获益) a lot from modern gadgets.
C. Multitasking is an important skill to young people.
D. Multitasking influences young people's development seriously.
54. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Young people think multitasking is good for their study and
work.
B. Employers consider it unnecessary for young people to be
taught all over again.
C. Educators feel that young people don't need to improve their
study skills.
D. People from the world of education believe multitasking has a
good effect on children's later study skills.
55. The author develops (阐述) the passage mainly by ________.
A. providing special examples
B. following the natural time order
C. giving out a cause and analyzing (分析)its effects

书面表达:
Dear Xiao Ming,
I am an editor of English Corner. I’ve received your letter asking me to give you some advice on how to learn English well. Here are some of my suggestions:
First of all, I suggest you read the English words, sentences and short articles aloud every morning. Meanwhile, you should try to memorize the useful sentences as many as possible and recite some short passages as well. Besides, it is suggested that you read a great variety of books after school. Last but not least, a certain amount of time should be spent on listening exercises.
In my opinion, as long as you can make good use of your spare time to learn English, surely, you will make great progress. Just as the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” If you hold on to your dream and study hard, I’m sure you will be successful in your English learning some day.
All the best!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
