I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare (兔子) and the tortoise (乌龟). At the end I said, “ Son, remember: Be slow and steady (镇定的), and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”
Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”
I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”
“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”
“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.”
Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”
I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

I recommend (推荐) flying to Washington D.C., our nation’s capital. Like Beijing, this is the heartbeat of America. While in Washington D.C. you should check out the White House, the presidential monuments, Ford’s Theater where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated (暗杀) and the US Capital building, which is the home of the US government.
When you’re ready to leave Washington D.C., go to Chinatown and jump on a bus up to New York. These buses are really cheap and convenient.
New York is like a fantasy world where you can do almost anything! My friend from Thailand said the best Thai food she ever ate was in New York City. So eat as much as you can, see a show on Broadway and climb the stairs of the Statue of Liberty. If you really want an American experience, eat a hot dog while you watch a New York Yankee’s baseball game.
Now, because you are my friends, I will recommend to you one of the great secret places in America: New Hampshire (新罕布什尔州). Even though this is my home state, I am not biased (偏爱). New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful places in the world. In the fall, hike the White Mountains and be surprised at the bright red, yellow and orange leaves on the trees. In the winter, drink a warm glass of hot chocolate before you ski through freshly fallen snow. And in the summer take a boat out of Lake Winnipesauke and enjoy crystal (水晶般的) clear water.
Actually, you’ll have a good time just about anywhere.

Canyoning (蹦谷运动)
The sports of canyoning explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast, or in river canyons. Protected by wetsuits and helmets (头盔), people jump from cliffs (悬崖) and waterfalls and explore caves and river canyons that would not normally be arrived at.
It was pioneered in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people leap from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).
Scuba diving
Diving is not popular with British people. The challenges of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough, but the coasts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland have some of the best wreck diving in the world.
The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133 www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688 www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills right up and to instructor level.
Surfing
The best surfing places in the UK are on the southwest coast where it is warmer and the surf is relatively steady, particularly in Cornwall. The best time of year to surf in the UK is late summer and autumn when water temperatures are at their mildest.
The British Surfing Association (01479 861256 www.britsurf.co.uk) has a list of famous surf schools around the country.
Rock climbing
The most popular natural rocks in Britain include the Peak District, the Lake District, coastal regions, while vast areas of Scotland are a climber’s paradise (天堂). Climbing courses and climbing walls can be located on the website of the British Mountaineering Council (0870 010 4878, www.thebmc.co.uk) which offers a series of short films that take the new climber through a step-by-step guide to visiting a climbing wall for the first time.

For 40 years, the people of London have been happy to discover in their parks a bird that seems to have made its way from the Himalayas to the capital of England. With its shocking green body, red mouth, long tail and noisy scream, the rose-ringed parakeet (长尾小鹦鹉) brought a vivid splash of colour to parks in and around London.
However, the parakeets are no longer welcome. The government has suddenly woken up to the fact that there are many more parakeets in and around London making life harder for the local bird population. Government experts put the number of parakeets at around 30,000. They fear that if the number of parakeets keeps rising, these birds will push out local birds like wood-peckers, starlings and nuthatches from trees to build their own nests.
Not only that. According to an online report by The Independent, the parakeets will then also get control of most of the food available in the parks — seeds, berries, fruit and nuts. The local bird population will then have a hard time staying alive. An organization called the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has asked the government to investigate (调查) what kind of a threat the parakeet brings to local birds. If the government decides that these birds are indeed a threat to local birds, steps will be taken to control the number of parakeets.
The most surprising thing about the case of the rose-ringed parakeet is that no one quite knows how the parakeets came from India and started breeding (繁殖) in areas around London.
53. Parakeets are no longer welcome mainly because ______.
A. the local birds are being driven out
B. the government doesn’t like the birds
C. they are a threat to people’s health
D. people have a great fear of this kind of birds
54. According to an online report by The Independent, ______.
A. the parakeets’ future threat is impossible
B. the number of the parakeets is around 3,000
C. the parakeets should fly back to the Himalayas
D. the local birds won’t have enough food
55. People are not certain ______.
A. where the parakeets live B. how the parakeets breed
C. how they flew to London D. when they started living in London

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A---F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。选E时 涂A+B 选F时 涂A+C。
A.How do we get the names for the days?
B.The origin of division of the times.
C.How did men invent the week?
D.The Jews names the seven days.
E.How did the Egyptians and the Romans name the days?
F.Reason for no names of the days.
56._____________
Do you know how the days of the week get their names? There was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple:men had not invented the week.
57. _____________
In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities, they wanted to have a special day on which to trade, a market day. Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day. The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day. On this day they didn't work, but met for trade and religious festivals.
58. _____________
The Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes. In this way the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day(which was Saturday). For example, Wednesday was called the fourth day (four days after Saturday).
59. _____________
- 10 -
When the Egyptians adopted the sevenday week, they named the days after five planets, the sun, and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names of their days of the week: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars(火星), of Mercury(水星), of Jupiter(木星), of Venus(金星), and of Saturn(土星).
60. _____________
We get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the AngloSaxons, who called most of the days after their own gods, which were roughly the same as the gods of the Romans. The day of the sun became Sunnandaeg, or Sunday. The day of the moon was called Monandaeg, or Monday. The day of the Mars became the day of Tiw, who was their god of war. This became Tiwesday, or Tuesday. Instead of Mercury's name, that of the god Woden was given to Wednesday. The Roman day of Jupiter, the thunderer, became the day of the thunder god Thor, and this became Thursday. The next day was named for Frigg, the wife of their god Odin, and so we have Friday. The day of Saturn became Saeterndaeg, a translation from the Roman, the Saturday.

范文:Dear Editor,
The students in our class had a discussion about whether the only way for senior high students to succeed is to go to college.
75% of the students hold the view that it is necessary to go to college, for college education can increase their knowledge and improve their personal qualities as well. However, 15% of the students think it no use going to college because it’s extremely difficult for college graduates to get satisfactory jobs. In addition, the tuition is too high for their families to pay for. The remaining 10% held the view that “All roads lead to Rome.” Therefore, they consider it makes no difference whether they go to college or not.
In my opinion, it’s a better choice to go to college because we can receive more education. But if we are unable to enter college, there are many other choices for us, and we can still contribute to society.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
