阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C,D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。
A
Compassion(同情) is a desire with us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into actions. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.
I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.
Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me,” was all he said.
What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.
46. The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits ____.
A. promised to obey the store rules
B. forgot to take any money with him
C. hoped to have the food first and pay later
D. could not afford anything more expensive
47. Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?
A. kind and lucky B. poor and lonely
C. friendly and helpful D. hurt and disappointed
48. The writer acted upon the store rules because ____.
A. he wanted to keep his present job
B. he felt no pity for the old gentleman
C. he considered the old man dishonest
D. he expected someone else to pay for the old man
49. What does the writer learn from his experience?
13
A. Wealth is more important than anything else.
B. Helping others is easier said than done.
C. Experience is better gained through practice.
D. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.
B
Pulling heavy suitcase all day in the summer is hard work, especially when you’re a thin 14-year-old. That was me in 1940 - the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City’s Pennsylvania Railway Station.
After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging passengers. I’d like to join them, thinking, “Everyone else is doing it.”
When I got home that night, I told my dad what I wanted to do. “You give an honest day’s work,” he said, looking at me straight in the eye. “They’re paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that.”
I followed my dad’s advice for the rest of that summer and have live by his words ever since.
Of all the jobs I’ve had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that has stuck with me. Now I teach my players to have respect for other people and their possessions. Being a member of a team is a totally shared experience. If one person steals, it destroys trust and hurts everyone. I can put up with many things, but not with people who steal. If one of my players were caught stealing, he’d be gone.
Whether you’re on a sports team, in an office or a member of a family, if you can’t trust one another, there’s going to be trouble.
50. What can be inferred about the baggage boys?
A. They could earn much, but they had to work hard.
B. Many of them earned money in a dishonest way.
C. They were all from poor families.
D. They were all thin, young boys.
51. What does the father’s advice imply(暗示)?
A. It is wrong to give more pay to the passengers.
B. Don’t believe them if they are paying you more.
C. Don’t follow others to overcharge the passengers.
D. It is difficult to work hard and live as an honest boy.
52. The writer can’t put up with stealing because he thinks that ____.
A. it is a totally shared experience
B. it is considered as the most dangerous
C. it does great harm to human relationship
D. it may lead to the loss of his sports team
53. It can be concluded from the text that ____.
A. his father’s advice helped him to decide which job to take up
B. working in the sports team was his most important experience
C. he learnt much from his shared experience with his team members
D. his experience as a baggage boy had a great influence on his later life

Martha had been working for Miller Laboratories for two years, but she was not happy there. Nothing significant had happened in the way of promotions or salary increases. Martha felt that her supervisor, a younger and less experienced person than she, did not like her. In fact, the supervisor often said unpleasant things to her.
One day, while talking with her friend Maria, she mentioned how discouraged she was. Maria gave her the name of a cousin of hers who was director of Human Resources Department for a large chemical company. Martha called him the next day and set up interview on her lunch hour.
During the interview, Mr. Petri said, “You’re just the kind if person we need here. You’re being wasted in your other job. Give me a call in a day or two. I’m sure we can find a place for you in our organization.” Martha was so happy she almost danced out of the building.
That afternoon, Ruth Kenny, her supervisor, saw that Martha had come in ten minutes late from her lunch hour and she said, “Oh, so you finally decided to come back to work today?”
This was the last straw. She could not take another insult(侮辱). Besides, Mr. Petri was right: she was being wasted in this job.
“Look,” she said angrily, “if you don’t like the way I work, I don’t need to stay here. I’ll go where I’m appreciated! Good-bye!” She took up her things and stormed out of the office.
That night she called Maria and told her what had happened and then asked Maria, “What do you think?”
“Well,” said Maria carefully, “are you sure about the other job?”
“Well, not exactly, but…”
Maria continued, “Will you be able to get a recommendation from Ms. Kenny if you need one?”
“A recommendation? ...from Ms. Kenny?” hesitated Martha, in a worried tone.
“Martha, I hope you didn’t burn your bridge,” Maria said. “I think I would have handled it differently.”
54. Martha is unhappy in her job because ____.
A. she has not advanced
B. the work is not significant
C. her supervisor is younger than she
D. there is too much work with little payment
55. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. At her supervisor’s criticism, Martha lost her temper.
B. Mr. Petri felt Martha was not valued in her present job.
C. Martha’s interview with the director was on her lunch hour.
D. Martha got the name of the director through her cousin

13
C. the last reminder D. the final unpleasant thing
57. What does Maria think of Martha’s decision?
A. Martha has handled the matter properly.
B. Martha shouldn’t have set the bridge on fire.
C. Martha should have found a new job before leaving.
D. Martha shouldn’t have lost her temper with supervisor.
D
As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录象) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”
58. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ____.
A. show the relationship between parents and children
B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table
C. report on the findings of a study
D. give information about family problems
59. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in Paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children ____.
A. have to help their parents to serve dinner
B. get the least attention from the family
C. are kept away from the dinner table
D. find it hard to keep up with other children
60. Which of the following statement would the writer agree to?
A. It is important to have the right food for children.
B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.
C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.
D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner

Cape Verde
Introduction
Consisting of 10 main islands and eight smaller islets off the west coast of Africa, Cape Verde is an archipelago with a lot to offer tourists, whether they are looking for a relaxing beach holiday, great surfing or a hiking trip in volcanic and mountainous landscape. Sal, the main tourist island, has wonderful sandy beaches to rival any in the world and also fantastic surfing and diving spots. With its warm climate all year round, wonderfully diverse landscapes, friendly locals and great food and music, Cape Verde really is an attractive destination.
61. ___________
With year round warmth and cold ocean currents helping to keep the temperatures from rising too high, Cape Verde has an attractive climate for tourists, and the majority of visitors are Western Europeans. The people who go to Cape Verde for the beach life tend to be families, while it is quite a young, adventure-seeking crowed that goes there for the diving or surfing.
62. ___________
Cape Verde is located in the Atlantic Ocean some 500km to the west of the African continent. Indeed, the name itself is taken from the name of that western-most tip, which can be found on Senegal. The islands are divided into two groups-the Barlavento (windward islands) and the Sotavento(leeward islands).
63. ___________
With warm sunny days year round there really is no bad time to go to Cape Verde. Some visitors might prefer to visit in winter and spring when daytime temperatures are a couple of degrees cooler and rarely exceed 25℃.
13
64. ___________
The reports on Sal have plenty of facilities for families and the beaches by Santa Maria are great for kids, with their white, fine sand. On some of the islands it is possible to do a bit of bird and turtle spotting without intruding too much on their habitats, and on Sao Vicente and Santiago it is possible to go horse riding.
65. ___________
On the islands public transport services are by minibuses or trucks. Taxis in central areas are cheap. Between the islands of Santiago, Sao Vicente and Sal there are flights at least once daily. Flights to the other islands are less frequent. TACV Cabo Verde Airlines (www. flytacv.com) is the main operator. There are regular ferry services between the islands, but departures are sometimes unpredictable.

Good afternoon, everyone! The topic of my speech today is “being a good partner”.
In modern society, we must learn to cooperate with others to complete our work more efficiently. Not only can cooperation save us time and energy, we can also learn from each other.
We will be lucky enough to find someone we like to cooperate with and share our joy and sadness with .However, it can be difficult to cooperate with someone we dislike. In that case, we will have to learn to put up with some of his shortcomings and try to discover his advantages.
In my opinion, to be a good partner, we should try to listen to others’ opinions never force our ideas on others and if he makes mistakes, try to point them out in a polite way.
Thank you for your listening!
