Literature arts in high school were absolute torture (折磨) for me. I hated reading stories and novels that my English teacher picked only to have discussions about the stories because I didn’t even understand. One day, my teacher picked The Gift of the Magi by O. Now, many years later, I still remember this story. The Furnished Room is a horror story about the love and devotion from a young man, who is desperate to find his missing lover. The story is tragic. The Ransom of Red Chief is actually a humorous story about a kidnapping that has gone all wrong. A Retrieved Reformation tells the tale of a thief who decides to give up his criminal career and do good deeds, which is moving. These are just a few of the many, many stories that O. Henry wrote and that I’ve enjoyed over these years.
O. Henry was the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter. He was born on September 11, 1862 and died of illness on June 5, 1910. His first story was published under his pen name, O. Henry. He published hundreds of stories. In honor of O. Henry’s contributions to American literature, the O. Henry Memorial Award
was founded in 1918 to award the author of the best American short story.

Many parents of preschoolers (学龄前儿童) struggle with their children’s fears of real and imaginary creatures. A new study offers some ideas on how they can better manage their children’s worries. The study, which was carried out by researchers at the University of California, Davis, appears in the journal Child Development.
Researchers studied about 50 4, 5, and 7yearolds in an effort to identify strategies that can be carried out by children. The children listened to a series of short stories. Each story featured a child alone or with another person who came into contact with something that looked like a real or an imaginary frightening creature, such as a snake or a ghost. Children were asked to predict how intensely (强烈地) afraid each of the children in the stories was, to give a reason why each child felt that way, and to offer a way to help the child in the story feel less afraid.
In situations in which a child’s fear was caused by real creatures, the researchers found, children would rather do something than think positive thoughts. In these situations, boys more often suggested fighting, while girls more often wanted to avoid the creature. They also found that between ages 4 and 7, children showed more understanding that people’s thoughts and beliefs can both cause and reduce fear. While preschoolers tended to suggest pretending the imaginary creature was friendly, older children tended to suggest reminding themselves what the reality was. Therefore, the researchers say, preschoolers may benefit from seeing things
in a more positive light, while older children may do better when they focus on what’s real and what’s not.
“These results should help parents by reminding them to keep in mind their children’s ageappropriate abilities when helping them deal with their fears, particularly fears of imaginary creatures,” according to the researchers.

The career of Henrik Ibsen was directly influenced by his childhood. In later years, the great playwright remembered only a cruel, angry father, forced by business defeats to move the family to an old farm outside Skien, Norway. Ibsen’s mother, no longer welcomed in the homes of her wealthy friends, started to suffer from depression. At sixteen, the young Ibsen left home, working as an apprentice (学徒) in Grimstad.
Failure, for Ibsen, became a way of life. Catalina, his first literary attempt, was impossible to sell. The privately printed book was eventually sold as packing paper to a grocer. Ibsen sought admission to the university in Oslo but failed the
entrance examinations. He tried a career as a journalist, without success. As a stage manager, first in Bergen, then in Oslo, he did better, but lost the latter job when the theater closed down. The experience was not altogether wasted. At Bergen, Ibsen’s agreement required him to provide one new play each year, and although none of the five he produced was well received, the requirement forced him to learn the techniques of his trade.
In 1864, Ibsen took his wife and baby son to Rome, Italy, where they spent five years living in poor conditions. On the edge of starvation, he wrote Brand, dealing with the subject he knew best: failure. Six months after he sent Brand to Danish publishers, his fortunes had changed completely. The play was brought out in March, 1866, becoming an immediate success. With Brand and Peer Gynt, written in the same period, Ibsen won recognition at last. Awarded an annual fixed payment and the title of national poet by Norway, he dropped his shabby clothes and became a welldressed, neatly barbered, distinguished writer.
