The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. It was incomplete and 41 could roll only very slowly. While rolling, it 42 the flowers along the way, chatted with worms and enjoyed the 43 .‎ One day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly. It was so 44 ! Now it could be 45 with nothing missing. It fixed the missing piece in itself and began to roll. 46 it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to 47 the flowers or talk to the worms. When it realized how 48 the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, 49 its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.‎ The 50 of the story, I think, is that in some strange sense we are more whole when we are 51 something. The man who has everything is 52 a poor man. He will never know 53 it feels like to desire, to hope, to nourish(滋养) his soul with the dream of something 54 .‎ If we are brave enough to let go of our unrealistic dreams, 55 enough to go through a tragedy and survive, generous enough to 56 another’s happiness, and wise enough to know there is enough love to go around for us all, then we can achieve our dreams that 57 living creature will ever know.‎ When we accept that 58 is part of human being, and when we can continue rolling 59 life and appreciate it, we will have achieved a wholeness that others can only 60 to. That, I believe, is what God asks of us—not "Be perfect", not "Don't even make a mistake", but "Be whole".‎ ‎41. A. finally B. otherwise C. however D. therefore ‎42. The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone.‎ How are genes cloned?‎ Researchers routinely use cloning techniques to make copies of genes that they wish to study. The procedure consists of inserting a gene from one organism, often referred ‎ to as "foreign DNA," into the genetic material of a carrier called a vector(带菌者). Examples of vectors include bacteria, yeast cells or viruses. After the gene is inserted, the vector is placed in laboratory conditions that allow it to multiply, resulting in the gene being copied many times over.‎ What animals have been cloned?‎ Over the last 50 years, scientists have done cloning experiments in a wide range of animals using a variety of techniques. In 1979, researchers produced the first genetically identical mice by splitting mouse embryos in the test tube and then implanting the resulting embryos into the wombs(子宫) of adult female mice. It was not until 1996, however, that researchers succeeded in cloning the first mammal from a mature cell taken from an adult animal. After 276 attempts, Scottish researchers finally produced Dolly, the lamb from the udder cell of a 6-year-old sheep. Besides, other mammals that have been cloned include: cat, deer, dog, horse, mule, ox, rabbit and rat.‎ Have humans been cloned?‎ In spite of several public announcements, human cloning still appears to be fiction. There currently is no solid scientific evidence that anyone has cloned human embryos.‎ In 1998, scientists in South Korea claimed to have successfully cloned a human embryo, but said the experiment was interrupted very early when the clone was just a group of four cells.‎ In 2004, a group led by Woo-Suk Hwang of Seoul National University in South Korea published a paper in the journal Science in which it claimed to have created a cloned human embryo in a test tube. However, an independent scientific committee later found no proof to support the claim and, in January 2006, Science announced that Hwang's paper had been retracted(撤销).‎ What are some of the moral issues related to cloning?‎ Cloning would mean the possibility of creating a human that is genetically identical to another person who has previously existed or who still exists. This may conflict with long-standing religious and social values about human dignity, possibly harming individual freedom, identity and autonomy(自主权). However, some argue that cloning could help sterile(生育困难的) couples fulfill their dream of parenthood. Others see human cloning as a way to avoid passing on a bad gene that runs in the family without having to undergo embryo selection.‎ ‎61. Which of the following animals hasn’t been cloned?‎ ‎ A. Now, the father and daughter who have no connection to Atlanta are meeting for the first time at Chops Steakhouse in Buckhead, North Atlanta. Antoniou was born in Southern California, but recently moved to Newnan, Georgia. Dr Becker lives in Wichita, Kansas.‎ ‎“I started looking for her and I could not find her. I could not find her mother. So, I thought maybe one day my daughter would Google her name and maybe she would find me that way and five days ago she found me,” Becker said.‎ He named the website after her and while Antoniou was typing her name in, “Scott Becker looking for April”, the website he created nearly 10 years ago, popped up. The two communicated by e-mail and over the phone for the past five days. Becker said he confirmed her mother’s maiden name, her birthday, middle name and some other specific details only his daughter would know.‎ ‎“He is absolutely my father. I always asked my mom information about my father so I could find him,” Antoniou said.‎ On Antoniou’s Facebook page she writes, “You think I could have Googled that ‎ 7 years ago and saved myself the yearly suffering. Father finds daughter with good luck.‎ C In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get – a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen – teaching English.‎ ‎ School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when the season for hunting jobs began. I was told they were also frequently absent in late October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines” just meant to have a good time.‎ ‎ But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class – seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (唾液纸团) and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.‎ ‎ In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. ‎ ‎ By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students didn’t behave well to praise. ‎ ‎ My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently, visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. ‎ ‎ I felt mildly successful that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day. I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door. ‎ ‎ He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine. ‎ ‎ When he spoke, he said simply, without blaming me, “You had nothing to say to them.” ‎ ‎ “You had nothing to say to them.” he repeated, “No wonder they are bored. Why not get to the meat of literature and stop talking about symbolism (象征主义). Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior?”‎ ‎ We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful, yet, warm teacher.‎ ‎ As the year passed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings and their motivations (动机). He helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths. In short, he made a teacher of me by teaching me the reality of Emerson’s words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.”‎ ‎ Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now. ‎ ‎70. It can be inferred from the story that in 1974 _________.‎ ‎ A. the writer became an optimistic person ‎ B. it was rather difficult to get a job in the USA ‎ C. the writer was very happy about her new job ‎ D. it was easy to get a teaching job in New Jersey ‎71. According to the passage, which of the following is most probably the writer’s problem as a new teacher?‎ ‎ A. She didn’t like teaching English literature.‎ ‎ B. She didn’t ask experienced teachers for advice.‎ ‎ C. She took too much time off to eat and sleep.‎ ‎ D. She had blind trust in what she learnt at college.‎ ‎72. What is the writer’s biggest worry after her taskmaster’s observation of her class?‎ ‎ A. She couldn’t ignore her students’ bad behavior any more.‎ ‎ B. She might lose her students’ respect.‎ ‎ C. She couldn’t teach the same class any more.‎ ‎ D. She might lose her teaching job.‎ ‎73. Which of the following gives the writer a sense of mild success?‎ ‎ A. It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.‎ Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?‎ To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.‎ On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science.‎ ‎76. The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to________.‎ ‎ A. show where science can be applied ‎ ‎ B. show the value of Brooks’s new book C. remind the reader of the importance of science D. explain why many writers use science in their works 77. According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?‎ ‎ A. Its strong basis. B. Its convincing points. C. Its clear writing. D. Its strong characters.‎ ‎78. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 3?‎ ‎ A. introducing scientific theories B. telling a story ‎ C. the science of child development D. the theory of sexual attraction ‎79. What is the author’s general attitude towards the book?‎ ‎ A. Contradictory(矛盾的) B. Supportive.‎ ‎ C. Cautious. D. Critical.‎ ‎80. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Problems with the book. B. Brooks’ life experience.‎ ‎ C. Death of the characters. D. Brooks’ translation skills. ‎ V. Today, I would like to talk about global warming, one of the worst environmental hazards facing humanity.‎ The past decades have witnessed an alarming increase in temperature worldwide. This change has resulted in warmer weather and more rain, causing sea levels to rise. Can you imagine that polar bears are losing their habitat and some low-lying lands are vanishing from earth? Are you not afraid of Pandora’s Box releasing more deadly viruses which multiply in warmth? ‎ It is a well-known fact that global warming is mainly caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, why don’t we start a change with cutting down on our carbon footprint? Ride a bike or share a car. Turn off power whenever possible. Recycle more and plant trees. As for governments, it is their duty to make stricter laws concerning carbon emission and make sure that enough money is put into research on energy-saving technology.‎ Remember—every effort counts!‎ Thanks you! ‎ ‎ (150 words)‎ 听力材料:‎ M: Did you and Anna really meet at exactly 7:55 in front of the theatre ?‎ W: No. To be exact, we got there 2 minutes earlier.‎ M: How are you getting to the airport ?‎ W: Well, I haven’t really got any choice--- I have to take the bus. My car is at the garage getting repaired , and a taxi is just too expensive. ‎ W: What’s wrong with Tony ?‎ M: His pet bird died this morning . He has been sitting still for quite a long time and is still crying in his room .‎ W: I can’t believe Karen is late for such an important occasion as a job interview. I reminded him time and again yesterday.‎ M: You should have known our daughter better by now. Everything you tell her goes in one ear and out the other.‎ W:I want to go to the concert tonight, but it starts at 7, and I have to work until 5. There won’t be enough time to get home for dinner.‎ M: I’ve got an idea. I’ll pick you up after work and we’ll eat downtown. That’ll give us plenty of time to get to the concert.‎ W: Sounds good.‎ 听下面一段对话,回答第6-8三个小题。‎ M:Do you have an idea what time it is in Rome now?‎ W:It’s about eight o’clock in the morning.‎ M:Look, the seat belt sign is on. What’s the matter? Anything wrong with airplane?‎ W:No, I don't think so. We don't need to worry.‎ M:Maybe you have good life insurance or you don't have any family to take care of.‎ W:Of course not. Compared with what I was going to die at that time, it’s nothing.‎ 听下面一段对话,回答第9-11三个小题。‎ W:So, why do you want to be a computer programmer?‎ M:Well, I don't like working in a fast food restaurant , and I want to make more money.‎ W:I see. Did they say if they had any language problem?‎ W:Yes. The language was sometimes a problem. They told me that hardly anyone spoke English except for the people in the hotel, but they found the staff of the hotel very helpful and friendly.‎ M:Well, that’s good. And did they buy much while they were there?‎ W:Just some toys. They told me not to buy clothes in the Caribbean. They were much more expensive than in the States. This is the first time that I have bought an English language newspaper. I know I can only understand a little part of it. One day, I bought a copy simply out of curiosity. My teacher told me it’s a good material for learning English. It is also helpful even for those who learn many other foreign languages, like French and German. I haven’t got into the details of each piece. I have just gone over the headlines. I found it very interesting. There are many pictures and a weather report. It has many sections, such as Home news , International News, Business News and Sports News, and so on. Certainly there are many sections, too. I like a great deal of information and important news while I’m learning the English language.‎
