precious plants. He grew them with great care.
The girl was amazed by a plant full of fine flowers. She went near the plant and enjoyed the beauty of its flowers. Suddenly she noticed that the plant was growing in a heap of filth (污垢). She could not stand the presence of dirt at the bottom of the plant with such beautiful flowers.
She worked out a plan to clean the plant. She pulled the plant with all her strength and uprooted it. She then carried it to the room and washed the roots in water till all traces of dirt were washed away. She then placed the plant on a clean stone and went away, thinking that she had done a great thing.
Later, her father came to the garden and saw the uprooted plant. Its flowers and leaves had withered (枯萎的) and the plant had almost died in the sun. His little daughter ran to him to show him her achievement. “I have cleaned it, Daddy,” she said happily. “It was planted in dirty soil. Now it is clean.”
The father showed her how her treatment had almost killed the plant. He told her that he had collected the filthy soil and used it to cover the plant’ s roots, as it was the best way to grow that plant. It could grow up healthily and produce fine flowers only if grown in filthy soil. So he put the plant into the dirt again. The girl was sad that the plant had suffered and withered by her cleaning.

There are many useful suggestions that can help one to improve English. Here are some of them to increase one’s English language vocabulary.
Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. It is based on understanding important words and expressions.
Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Researches show that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions(重复) to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文),the more words one is shown, the better vocabulary one will have. Keep a piece of paper close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to understand its meaning from the context. Then look up the word in a dictionary.
Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.
Building vocabulary is a life-long task. Remember: “In the beginning was the word.” Your future could depend on how rich your vocabulary is. It will also determine the quality of your communication.

The reason why women love to spend hours in shops while men prefer to be in and out of the high street in minutes can trace back(追溯) to their hunter-gathering past, find scientists.
While women spent their days gathering food, often with children, men were hunters who made plans about how to catch and kill their prey (猎物). These two ways of getting food in the past show how we shop in modern times, the study believes.
Women would spend hours trying to find the right things, because they had in the past spent ages trying to find the best quality and health-giving food. Men, on the other hand, decided
15
in advance what animal they wanted to kill and then went looking for it. Once it was found and killed, they returned home.
Daniel Kruger, professor of the University of Michigan, said the study could be the answer to why there are a lot of collisions when couples go shopping together. He said it could also help couples to avoid fights in the shops if they understood the reasons why each sex had different ways of deciding on the perfect present.
“In modern times, women are much more likely than men to know when a specific type of item will go on sale. Women also spend much more time choosing the perfect color and texture.”
Professor Kruger said his study was important because if men and women understood each other’s shopping habits they could avoid arguments while shopping.
29. What has decided the different shopping habits of men and women?
A. Different ways of keeping food in the past.
B. Different ways of eating in the past.
C. Different ways of buying food in the past.
D. Different ways of gathering food in the past.
30. In comparison(比较) with men, women were less likely to .
A. catch the right animal and kill it
B. spend much time on shopping
C. choose the right color and texture
D. know when a specific item was on sale
31. What does the underlined word mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Requests. B. Arguments.
C. Concerns. D. Differences.
32. According to Kruger, his study can help to ______________.
A. develop good shopping habits
B. avoid arguments in shopping between men and women
C. give people tips on choosing good gifts
D. make sure people buy safe food for children

D
Many children who are starting school are not able to speak because their parents are too busy to talk to them, a leading teacher, Sir Robin Bosher, the director of primary education at Harris Federation, has warned.
Nearly half of four-and five-year-olds at one school know 30 to 50 words or fewer, Sir Robin said--a similar level of English seen in 18-month-olds. By four or five, healthy children can normally say 1,500 to 2,000 words.
Sir Robin said 57 out of 60 children who began at the school last September spoke no English, but this presents little problem for teachers, as young children can become fluent within six months.
However, 25 children in the year had “no or hardly any” ability to speak any language whatsoever.
“The first three months is used to teach language. It takes a lot of work,” said Sir Robin, “The problem has worsened over my 30-year career.”
“The language shortage has increased because there’s a larger number of children without English. It’s also because the amount of time that parents talk to children is reduced. Many mums or dads are working all the time because they have three or four jobs. It’s about time, or the understanding of how important that is.”
“Many of the children have little experience of playing with others. So you have to help children to learn how to play as well. It’s a fact, and you have to deal with it.”
Michael Gove, the UK education secretary, has said that some children arrive at school still wearing nappies(尿布), because the state has been too slow to intervene(插手)in the “disordered” homes.
33. How many words does an 18-month-old child usually know, according to the text?
A. 30 to 50. B. 50 to 60.
C. 1,000 to 1,500. D. 1,500 to 2,000.
34. Why are more and more children not able to speak enough English?
A. They don’t want to learn it.
15
B. Their parents don’t want them to learn it.
C. Their parents have little time to communicate with them.
D. There are no teachers to teach them.
35. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A. The government ignores the importance of langnage.
B. The government should make some rules for families to follow.
C. Parents believe in the social principle.
D. Children aren’t polite enough.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项·
选项中有两项为多余选项。
36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here are some suggestions.
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First, plan your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for study. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
15
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your studies.
B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.
D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
E. Maybe you are an ordinary student.
F. Make full use of class time to do your own homework.
G. This will help you understand the next class.
