Wasn’t you great-great grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes(犯罪)?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors(祖先) arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.‎ Accommodation Zones Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.‎ Friends If you wish to invite a friend over to visit. you must first ask your host’s permission. Built nearly 2,500 years ago as a temple celebrating the Greek goddess Athena, it was for thousands of years the church of the Virgin Mary of the Athenians, then a mosque(清真寺), and finally a ruin. The building was changed and the sculptures(雕塑) much damaged over the centuries. By 1800 only about half of sculptures remained.‎ Between 1801 and 1805, Lord Elgin, the British ambassador(大使) to the Ottoman Empire(奥斯曼帝国), which controlled Athens, acting with the full knowledge and permission of the Ottoman authorities, removed about half of the remaining sculptures from the fallen ruins and from the building itself.Lord Elgin loved Greek history and transported the sculptures back to Britain. The arrival of the sculptures in London had a huge effect on the European public, greatly increasing interest in ancient Greek culture and influencing contemporary(同时代的) art. The British Museum got these sculptures from Lord Elgin in 1816 and since then these sculptures have all been on show to the public, free of charge.‎ ‎ Since the early 1980s, however, the Greek government has asked for the return to Athens of all the Parthenon sculptures in the British Museum. They have also challenged the British Museum’s legal title(合法所有权) to the sculptures. The British Museum, however, insists that it exists to tell the story of cultural achievement throughout the world, from the dawn of human history over two million years ago until the present day. The museum considers itself an important resource for the world: the width and depth of its collection allows the world public to re-examine cultural identities and explore the complex network of world cultures.‎ ‎ It also says that, the Parthenon sculptures are an important representation of ancient Athenian civilization(文明). Each year millions of visitors admire the sculptures and understand on how ancient Greece influenced— and was influenced by— the other civilizations that it met.‎ ‎61. For most of its history people went to the Parthenon to ______.‎ ‎ A. admire the goddess Athena B. speak to god to ask for help or give thanks ‎ C. search for sculptures D. learn about its complex history ‎62. What can we learn about Lord Elgin from the passage?‎ ‎ A. He is greatly admired in Greece.‎ ‎ B. He worked for the Ottoman Empire.‎ ‎ C. He saved the Parthenon sculptures from being destroyed.‎ ‎ D. He had a deep interest in Greek culture.‎ 12‎ ‎63. The underlined “it” (in Paragraph 4) refers to “______”.‎ ‎ A. the British Museum B. the Greek government ‎ C. the Parthenon D. British Museum’s legal title ‎64. What can we infer(推断) from the passage?‎ ‎ A. The sculptures introduced ancient Greek culture to the west.‎ ‎ B. Ancient Greek culture has greatly influenced world culture.‎ ‎ C. The British Museum has made much money from the Parthenon sculptures.‎ ‎ D. Only the British Museum has the best technology to keep these sculptures safe. ‎ ‎65. The author’s main intention in writing this passage is to tell ______.‎ ‎ A. the value of the Parthenon and its sculptures ‎ B. what people can see in the British Museum ‎ C. why the British Museum refuses to return the sculptures ‎ D. the influence of Greece on British culture D When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories in which some of the families suffered the hardest.‎ One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.‎ The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate(幸运的) than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three- year-old Meghan.‎ ‎“We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”‎ I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.‎ While I sorted(整理) through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate(捐赠) some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up some toys that they no longer needed.‎ The boys placed the toys they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.‎ ‎ “Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”‎ Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”‎ Swallowing hard, I looked at Meghan for a long moment, wondering how I could teach the boys the lesson she had just taught me, for I suddenly realized that anyone 12‎ ‎ can give their cast-offs away. True generosity is giving that which you value most.‎ The boys had watched, open-mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box. Without a word, the boys rose and went to their rooms and came back carrying their favorite toys. ‎ Astonished, I realized that the boys had also recognized what little Meghan’s action meant. Swallowing back tears, I pulled all three of them into my arms.‎ Taking the cue from my little one, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did.‎ It’s easy to give that which we don’t want any more, but harder to let go of things we love, isn’t it? However, the true spirit of giving is to give with your heart.‎ ‎66. Why does the author give a detailed description of a particular picture in the Sunday newspaper?‎ A. To create an atmosphere of fear and fright brought by the tornado.‎ B. To request unconcerned people to donate for the poor families.‎ ‎ C. To show the helplessness and hopelessness of the family in the picture.‎ ‎ D. To give importance to what touched her and made her decide to help the hopeless family.‎ ‎67. Why did Brad and Brett also donate their favorite things finally?‎ ‎ A. They were encouraged to donate some valuable things by the mother.‎ ‎ B. Meghan’s decision inspired them to donate their favorite things.‎ ‎ C. They also wanted to show generosity by giving away their valuable things.‎ ‎ D. Meghan’s action made them replace their favorite things with new ones.‎ ‎68. By “swallowing hard”, the writer means that ______.‎ ‎ A. She was deeply puzzled by what the little girl did ‎ B. she had trouble persuading Meghan not to give away Lucy ‎ C. she was greatly moved by Meghan’ unexpected decision ‎ D. she was uncertain what result Meghan’s action would bring about ‎69. It is suggested in the sentence However, the true spirit of giving is to give with your heart that ______.‎ ‎ A. sincere donation means offering help to others whole-heartedly.‎ ‎ B. true giving means giving others what you value most ‎ C. true generosity means helping others at the cost of your own benefit ‎ D. true kindness means giving most of your time and energy to donation ‎70.
