A
As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.
- 20 -
Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.
One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.
Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

The website "FarmersOnly. com" calls itself an online dating and friendship finder. The idea started in the mind of a man, Jerry Miller in Ohio. He wondered how farmers could meet new people who understand the life of a farmer. Jerry Miller is not a farmer but he represents a lot of farmers.
As he tells it, the idea for the site was planted when a farmer told him one day that she was recently divorced and would like to date. But someone would invite her to meet for coffee at nine o’clock at night, when she had to start her day at five the next morning.
So, in 2005, Jerry Miller launched his website. "You don’t have to be a farmer to be on "FarmersOnly. com". But you do have to have the good old-fashioned traditional values of America’s heartland. "
You also have to live in the United States or Canada to be a member of the site. Some services are free, but a full membership costs fifty dollars for a year. As of last week the site listed more than 58,000 members. Many of them are farmers in the United States. Others are students or workers involved in some way with agriculture. Jerry Miller tells us about thirty marriages in the last year have resulted from his website.
Some farmers have also found love through a group, Singles in Agriculture, which was formed as a nonprofit organization in 1986.It organizes gatherings that usually end with a dance, but is not a dating service. The purpose is to support educational and social activities that offer people a chance for friendship. Its

A green roof is a roof of a building that is covered with vegetation over a waterproof membrane (防水膜). It is a proper method of growing plants on the roof and does not refer to the mere green color of the roof. People benefit a lot from these green roofing systems, and they are gaining popularity day by day.
Human beings have occupied major areas of land and transformed them into huge buildings, which has severely affected the environment and the natural habitat of bird and insects. Green roofing compensates for that. It creates a natural habitat for creatures like bees, grasshoppers and other insects.
Modern roofs need a lot of energy to control the temperatures in winter and summer. However, green roofs reduce the amount of energy required for controlling temperatures, thus making them energy-efficient. As green roofing is highly energy-efficient, it can act as a encouragement for people who are interested in green roofing systems
- 20 -
and their benefits. It will increase the market value of the building and fetch the owner a great share of profit.
As the vegetation requires a water supply, there is a inbuilt water preservation layer in the green roof system. This layer helps to keep the rainwater. It makes full use of the rainwater and prevents wastage. During heavy rains, the water runs off the flat roof. The green roof prevents this overflow by slowing down the volume of running water.
Green roofs can compensate for the lost greenery in urban areas and increase the artistic value of an area. Your building will look beautiful, coated with green vegetation. Green roofs can serve as local community garden and create a natural atmosphere, giving physical and psychological benefits like reducing stress levels in people and keeping them physically fit. Besides, people can start their own small-scale cultivation (栽培)and experience the pleasure of gardening.

Students who date(约会) in middle school have significantly worse study skills. They are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use as their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
“Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships,” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade.
Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students’ academic(学术的) efforts. He found that some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students always had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
“At all points in time, teachers considered the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit (学分), being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
“Dating a classmate may be as complicated as dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps see the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and could divert (转移) attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,” Orpinas concluded.
33. According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____
A. have poorer academic performances
B. be more likely to hurt others
- 20 -
C. enjoy better school lives
D. be less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
34. When doing his study, Orpinas ________________.
A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade
B. completed a survey and a report each year
C. found that the students’ study skills have connection with their frequency of dating
D. completed questionnaires about the students’ academic efforts
35. What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up?
A. They don’t want to see each other any longer.
B. They will think it’s reasonable to get depressed.
C. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes.
D. Their attention to studying will be affected.

M: There’s just one problem, madam. Your driver’s license is no longer valid.
W: What?
M: Yes. It is the 19th today, and your driver’s license was valid through the 17th. I’m afraid it breaks the rule. Do you have another form of ID?
W: Not with me. My passport is at home, but that’s 30 minutes away.
M: I’m so sorry, but this is our rule. If you want to continue with your deposit, you might have to go home and get it.
W: That’s OK. I’ll just come back tomorrow with my passport. I need to try to get a new license now. Otherwise, I won’t be able to drive home!

M: Hi, Julie. How’re you doing?
W: Well, pretty busy.
M: Did you register for the new term?
W: Yeah, I registered this morning.
M: Going to take any business classes?
W: No, I don’t think so. I’m going to take African Music. It meets three times a week.
M: Hmm... Well, any piano classes?
W: Yeah, I’m taking Advanced Piano. It meets on Monday.
M: How about the basic requirement courses?
W: I’m going to take English Composition and Basic Spanish.
M: Sounds like a full schedule!

W: Yeah, I’m going to be really busy.

W: Hello, George! I wanted to speak to you yesterday, but you weren’t at your usual place for lunch.
M: No, I had a free day from the newspaper office because I worked so much overtime last week.
W: Oh, I see. You had a holiday!
M: Well, I stayed at home and looked after the baby.
W: What? You took care of the baby? Whose baby?
M: My sister’s baby. She wanted to go shopping in the morning. So I stayed at home and did a lot of useful things.
W: About what?
M: I mended my radio, washed a shirt and some socks, and cleaned out the drawers of my desk.
W: I don’t call that a holiday. I wanted to ask you to a concert last night, the one at the Town Hall near where we live.
M:That’s funny! My office called me in the afternoon and asked me to go and write an article about the concert. I noticed that you weren’ t there; but your friend Mary was.
W:Was she indeed? That’s very strange.

M: Hi, Wendy.
W: Oh, Jonny. How are you doing? Busy?
M: No, not at all. I’ve been a couch potato lately, killing time by watching TV. Oh, by the way, did you hear the news?
W: What news?
M: The government is going to turn the city square into an amusement park.
W: Wonderful. I am glad that the big and ugly thing will be gone.
M: Why? Don’t you think the square is 100 times better than any amusement park?
W: I don’t think so.

M: The Square is a symbol of our city.
W: Well, I don’t know if that huge and boring thing can be our symbol, what I care is that the city has dozens of parks where you can take a nice walk.
M: You’re right, but don’t you think that we will no longer have a peaceful and quiet place once the amusement park opens?
W: Does that matter? More importantly, the amusement park means employment.
M: Why?
W: Income. If you have income, you have money to spend, and in turn, it will create more jobs.

M: Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.
Have you ever heard of a 4-year-old college student? But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school. Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two, he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak. His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn’t stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads the newspaper every day, and he can play the violin well. He doesn’t have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teachers want to help him in every way.
