In the early part of the twentieth century, racism (种族主义) was widely spread in the
United States. Many African Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or
employment, Marian Anderson (1897~1993) was an African American woman who gained fame
as concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church
choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917,
she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her
career as a singer for church gatherings. After that, in 1929, she went to Europe to study voice
- 10 -
and spent several years performing there. Her voice was widely praised(赞美)throughout the
Europe. Then she returned to the US in 1935 and became a top concert singer after performing at
Town Hall in New York City.
Racism again affected Anderson in 1939. When it was arranged for her to sing at
Constitution Hall in Washington D. C., the daughters of the American Revolution opposed it
because of her color. She sang instead at the Lincoln Memorial for over 75,000 people. In 1955,
Anderson became the first black soloist to sing with the Metropolitan Opera of New York City.
The famous conductor Toscanini thought highly of her voice as ‘heard only once in a hundred
years’. She was a US delegate to United Nations in 1958 and won the UN peace prize in 1977.
Anderson eventually triumphed(取得胜利)over racism.

There are several explanations for why a circle(圆圈)is divided into 360 parts. Probably
the best explanation is connected with the Babylonians (巴比伦人)
Many, many centuries ago, large distances were measured in the Babylonian mile. The
Babylonian mile equaled about seven of our miles. Because of its length, the time
- 10 -
needed to
travel the Babylonian mile became a measure of time. That is, one day was said to be twelve
Babylonian miles.
About one thousand years before Christ, the Babylonians began keeping records of star
movements. They needed a way to record how much time passed between the moment they saw
a star and then observed it again. They used the Babylonian time-mile as their measure of time.
In order to have accurate time, the Babylonians divided their time-mile into thirty parts.
Babylonians believed that each trip around the sky was a circle. One complete trip around the
sky, they reasoned(推理), took one day.
You already know that one day was the same as twelve Babylonian time-mile. Since each
time-mile was divided into thirty parts, the circular trip around the sky was 12×30 or 360 parts
long. That is how there came to be 360 degrees in a circle.
25. The Babylonian mile was first used to measure
A. star movements B. distances C. circles D. time
26. For what was the Babylonian time-mile divided into thirty parts?
A. To measure more exact time
B. To make a day into 360 parts
C. To measure more exact distances
D. To made a circle into 360 parts

A. the Babylonians, ideas about the sky
B. why the circle is divided into 360 degrees

Protecting the heart, warding off cancer, easing the pain of arthritis (关节炎)----the list of
Vitamin E’s possible benefits keeps getting longer. Now, because of two new studies,
some researchers say the nutrient is so critical for older people that everyone over 65 should
consider taking a daily supplement.
The latest finding comes from nutrition and immunology respected, Vitamin E boosts the
immune system in older people. In an eight-month study of 88 seniors, the scientists found that
those taking at least 200 international units (IU) of Vitamin E daily had stronger immune
responses than those taking little or none.
The Tufts research follows a national study that found Vitamin E delays the progression
of Alzheimer’s ( 老年痴呆) disease. Researchers tracked 341 moderately senile ( 高龄的)

advanced stage of the disease.

Canada, says more studies are needed to learn who can benefit most and at what dose. Vitamin E
thins the blood, so high amount or overdose can cause bleeding in people who also take blood
thinning drugs, even aspirin. Individuals with serious conditions should consult their doctors.
But most people over 65, Chandra says, can take up to 200 IU with no side effects and great
benefits.

Exploring Antarctica
Without special survival tools, food, and fuel, you wouldn't last long in Antarctica before
freezing to death. Yet some animals and plants thrive in the coldest desert on Earth. They have
developed special adaptations(适应) to help them survive in the extreme climate. 36
Sensitive eyes. Antarctic sunlight can be very strong. Believe it or not, you risk a bad
sunburn in the summer——as well as snow blindness. 37
Thin skin. Your skin can't keep you warm in the subzero temperatures. Please do keep
warm.
38 As a mammal, your body can stay warm for a while but not forever. After a
few unprotected hours in Antarctica, you would be frozen.
Little to eat. Not much grows in this cold desert. Away from the coast, you would soon
starve with nothing to eat.
Fur and fat. Seals, penguins, and whales all have a lot of fat to allow them to stay warm in
the icy Antarctic seas. 39
Ice eyes. Some Antarctic plants have developed special resistance to the strong UV rays (紫
