You might be surprised to learn that small everyday gestures in western culture may be regarded as rude and ignorant (愚昧的) ones in other cultures.
In China and Japan, kissing is not usual as a greeting, while countries such as the USA, Australia and the UK have yet to see men kissing as a greeting. A welcoming kiss on both cheeks with the same sex is a matter of course in many regions, especially around the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East.
In the western world, handshakes between men and women are of course the most widespread form of greeting. In a strict Muslim culture, kissing a woman in public, especially if she is unmarried, would not be acceptable. A man would only shake hands with a woman if she offered him her hand first. In Muslim and Hindu society, the left hand is considered unclean, so practices such as handshaking and eating are only ever performed with the right hand.
Bowing can vary between different cultures and regions. The way you bow depends on the social situation and the reason you are bowing. In the countries like Japan, China and Korea, bowing shows respect for elders and those in authority. In the western world, direct eye contact is seen as a sign of strength and interest. But in many Asian countries it is regarded as rude, so there is no direct eye contact when bowing.
A Chinese person may not realize that a British person would consider spitting in public very bad manners, and a British person may not consider that making the “OK” sign in Brazil would be seen as highly offensive.
If you intend to travel abroad, a little effort in understanding other cultures can prove invaluable for a successful and enjoyable experience.
46. This passage is mainly about .
A. customs and cultures B. western culture and eastern culture
C. different body language from different cultures
D. the influence of social customs on people’s lives
47. In North Africa, when meet, they usually kiss each other as a greeting.
A. men or women B. a man and a woman C. the elders D. a child and his parents
48. is regarded as unacceptable for some British people.
A. Bowing B. Kissing C. Spitting in public D. Making the “OK” sign
49. The underlined word “invaluable” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. easy B. difficult C. useless D. useful
50. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Japan has the same culture as China and Korea.
B. People don’t use their left hands in Muslim society.
C. Kissing an unmarried woman is forbidden in any culture.
D. Westerners usually make direct eye contact while talking.

第二节 书面表达(满分30分)
Possible versions:
Good morning, everybody! My topic today is humor. There have been many masters of humor in the world and the one that impresses me most is Charlie Chaplin. Born into a poor family in 1889, he made great achievements in acting. Throughout his life he wrote, directed and starred in many films. His charming character, the little tramp, was well-known all over the world. It was a social failure but was loved for his optimism and determination to overcome all difficulties. In addition, Charlie Chaplin himself is considered as a great actor who not only brought laughter to people but also inspired people with great confidence.
Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face. However difficult our life may be, we can still discover and even create some humor. There is no denying that humor can make us feel content with our life and meanwhile strengthen our confidence to meet challenges in life.
Thank you for listening.
