High school is not easy. And if you were to ask Pink (a famous American singer) her opinion on the subject she’d tell you the same. Before she became famous, and when she was still called Alicia Moore, the young superstar faced more than her fair share of high school drama.
In her interview with Faze (Canada’s student magazine),Pink admits she was considered as a troublemaker at school. “Yes, the problem was, I was labelled as trouble,” she says. Unfortunately, Pink began to deliver what the teachers expected and the bad cycle began. “It’s like the label they give you. They treat you badly, so you act badly,” Pink continues. “Did I deserve it? In the end, yes, but I feel I just get confused and act the way the teachers expect me to.”
Predictably, Pink dropped out of school soon after she began to sing in nightclubs. She sang any chance she could get and was eventually discovered by a talent scout (星探) while singing in a club in Philadephia. However, she did not
19
always sing the type of music we are used to hearing.
She does not regret anything she has done and would not change her past if she could. She believes having faced so many difficulties at a young age is a good thing. “To experience the good you have to go through the bad, Don’t worry about being labelled. Just wait and live our own life,” she says. “Give it a couple of years then it won’t matter. Because no matter what label they give you, the best thing you can do is to prove them wrong.”
21. What does the underlined word “labelled” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Known B. Realized C. Marked D. Discovered
22. The passage implies that students_________.
A. are supported to follow their teachers’ advice

Bats (蝙蝠) are impressive creatures. They are known to carry dangerous diseases like SARS without getting sick.
So researchers wanted to know: How do bats fight off so many deadly diseases? Learning their secret could help doctors better treat humans who have these diseases, therefore saving millions of lives.
To solve this problem, a team of researchers from Australia and China analyzed bat DNA. The scientists studied two kinds of bats—the Australian megabat, known
19
as the flying fox, and the Chinese microbat. The scientists then arranged the bat genome (基因组) in order by comparing their DNA.
The researchers now think that the special immunity (免疫性) to illness that bats have may be connected to their ability to fly.
Bats are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can truly fly. Flying uses up a lot of energy. The energy burned for flying produces something in the animal called free radicals (自由基). Free radicals can damage DNA and lead to diseases such as cancer.
However, bats are not affected by free radicals produced during flight. The reason is that bats carry special genes to repair any damaged DNA.
Scientists think that because bats fly and produce free radicals, they’ve evolved to carry genes that shaped their special immune system.
“We’re thinking that the evolution(进化) of flight led to a sort of effect, influencing not only the immune system but also things like aging and cancer,” says Chris, an expert of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. “We think we’ve really found something special.”
Researchers believe that this discovery might one day be key to helping humans fight diseases such as cancer that attack the immune system and damage DNA.
25. What’s true about bats according to the passage?
A. They carry many deadly diseases like SARS so it’s easy for them to get sick.
B. Bats are the only animals that can tell directions easily.
C. Bats are among the mammals that can truly fly.
D. Researchers studied bats to help save people.
26. According to researchers, bats can fight off many deadly diseases mainly because____
A. they have developed special immune system through evolution
B. they are able to fly, which burns a lot of energy
C. free radicals in their bodies can damage DNA and cause diseases
D. they carry no special genes to repair damaged DNA
27. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. bats and dangerous diseases
19
B. bats and their special immune system
C. free radicals and immune system
D. ways to cure cancer

Britain's most popular lie has been disclosed, with one in four people admitting using “Sorry I had no signal" when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.
Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year. Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend, on average at least twice a day. The most popular lie was saying you had no mobile phone signal, with one in four people admitting regularly using the little white lie. It usually came after they hit the “ignore" buttonwhen their mobile rang.
Three quarters of people think women are better liars. The research found 46 % of girls have been caught lying, compared to 58 of men.
The second most common fib is “I haven't got any cash on me” when asked for money by beggars and Big Issue sellers.“Nothing's wrong – I'm fine” came third followed by “You look lovely” and “Nice to see you”.
Modern technology turned out to have contributed to many lies with “I didn't get your text” in 18th, “Our server was down” in 20th and “My battery died” in 26th place. Other lies to make the top ten included “I'll give you a ring”, “We're just good friends” and “We'll have to meet up soon”. “I'm on my way” and “No, your bum doesn't look big in that” completed the top ten.
In many cases perhaps it is better to delight someone with a fib than destroy
19
someone with the truth, according to a spokesmanfor OnePoll, which carried out the research of 4,300 adults. He added: “As a nation we just like trying to be nice and not upsetting people. Often little white lies can cover what we actually want to say. Most of these were considered completely harmless. "

A. fourth and tenth B. fourth and first C. third and tenth D. third and first
33. Most people think women are better liars because _______
A. fewer women liars are found out B. there’re more women liars
C. women tell less harmful lies D.women are harder to convince
34. “Our server was down” in Paragraph5 is perhaps a lie told as an excuse for not __________.
A. inviting a friend to dinner B. coming to a party on time
C. responding to an e-mail D. cleaning one’s room
35. Why do British people like telling lies, according to the spokesman for OnePoll?
A. Because truth will destroy others.
B. Because British people are very considerate.
C. Because it’s easier for others to understand lies.
D. Because lies are harmless.

Lots of people give you advice on overcoming fear. 36 However, I want to tell you that a world without fear would be more dangerous. So we should treat fear as a friend. Here are three reasons:

but tried to kill it for food. Now, most of us don’t face danger like hungry tigers every day, but we do face serious bosses or public speaking. So, what can we do? 39
Lastly, fear lets you know you are alive. Why do we like roller coaster? 40 Same for horror (恐怖)movies.
So fear guide you towards what’s important for you and encourage you to take action to improve.
A. Don’t fear to be wrong.
B. It frightens us in a safe way.
C. Imagine what life would be like without fear.

录音稿
(Text 1)
W: Do you like my new T-shirt?
M: It’s great. I bought one myself the other day. It’s got a pattern of black and white circles on it.
W: I bought two — this one that I’m wearing and another one with some words across the front.
(Text 2)
M: We can deliver your order either in the morning or afternoon, but we can’t tell an exact time.
W: Well, I’ll be at work all day and be home from work at 6:00. So, you’d better send it between 7:00 and 8:00.
(Text 3)
M: The cover design has come.
W: Oh, what a shame … I thought there’d be more colors in it.
M: I think it’s attractive. But send me back if you’re not happy.
W: But I think my manager will like it.
(Text 4)
W: The normal price for the family holidays is $290 per week.
M: Does that include all meals?
W: Only breakfast and dinner, and you don’t have to pay for transport from the airport to the hotel.
(Text 5)
W: I think we should get a pet. What do you think?
M: Dogs need a lot of looking after and I don’t like cats.
W: I’ve always liked the idea of gold fish. They look nice. So, let’s keep fish.
19
M: That’s OK.
(Text 6)
W: Royal Mount Hotel. How may I help you?
M: Hello, I’d like to book a twin room, from the evening of the 19th to the 21st. And I’ll be leaving on the morning of the 22nd.
W: OK, sir.
M: What is the price then?
W: For a twin room, I can give you a special price as it’s low season: $200 for each night.
M: Great. Thank you.
W: And how would you like to pay, sir? We accept cash, cheque or credit card.
M: I’ll pay cash on arrival, if that’s OK.
W: Of course, sir.
(Text 7)
W: Hello, and welcome to Smith’s Gym.
M: Hi there. I’d like to become a member.
W: Yes, of course. First, you just need to fill out a form. Here it is, sir.
M: OK. Name … telephone number … address … Is that OK?
W: OK, thanks. Now, we’ve got three membership types here — common, which costs £21.00 a month. Silver, which means you can use the gym at all times, and this is £36.50. Or for just £5 more you can get a gold membership, which gives you free access to the tennis courts and all classes.
M: For now I think I’ll just take the silver.
(Text 8)
W: Which sports are you doing on each day this year, Tom?
M: On Monday, it’s swimming again.
W: The same as last year — so on Tuesday will you have basketball?
M: I can’t do it that day because we’ve got football that day.
W: Oh. So what about Wednesday?
M: I want to practice football with my friends but the teacher said I had to do volleyball. Oh, there is a new teacher to teach us baseball on Thursday.
19
W: Ah, yes. That’s much more interesting.
M: And on Friday I had to choose between tennis and basketball. All my classmates wanted to do basketball so I decided to do that because Dad can teach me tennis at the weekend.
W: That’s right.
(Text 9)
M: Hi, Gina. This is Nelson.
W: Hi, Nelson. How are you doing?
M: I’m doing fine, thanks. Ivan said you need help with your website.
W: Yes, I was wondering if we could meet and talk about it.
M: Sure. When’s a good time for you?
W: How about Monday evening?
M: That’s not a good time for me. I’m picking up a friend at the airport. I could meet you for lunch, though.
W: I can’t. I’m having lunch with a friend. Maybe Tuesday, oh wait, no, Tuesday won’t work either. I have to go to the dentist in the morning, and I’m having dinner with John, in the evening. How does your Wednesday look?
M: Wednesday is out for me. I’m at a meeting the whole day. Do you have any free time on Thursday?
W: I have a long day at work, and then I’m going shopping with Lynn in the evening.
M: And Friday I’m busy the whole day. So do you work on Saturday? We may be able to meet in the afternoon.
W: Sounds good. See you then.
(Text 10)
M: Hi, you’re listening to Talk Back, the show where you tell us what you think about Radio Western. I’m sure you’ve all heard we have a new boss here at Radio Western and she pays much attention to your views. And we’ll be speaking to a surprise guest who has sent a letter to us later in the show.
I must start by saying a big “thank you” to Tony Marsons — judging from your letters, he did a great job of covering the show last week while I was away. Thanks Tony. And thanks for all the e-mails asking about my holiday. I had a
19
long, rather boring flight home late last night but I must say I had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and the locals we spoke to were really friendly. Shame about the weather, which was disappointing, but you can’t have everything I suppose. And the kids loved it, so everyone was happy.
Anyway, on to the first of your letters … John from Leicester writes, “As the programs end with guests getting rushed and many questions going unanswered. Why don’t you offer some kind of after-show online program where the guest can continue answering listeners’ questions?” I think that’s a good idea. We’ll certainly pass this one up to management. I’m sure a service like this would go down really well on our website.

Dear John,
I’m glad to hear you are coming to my hometown at Christmas. I have arranged a 3-day tour in Fuzhou for you.
The first wonder you can explore is Gu Mountain, located in the east of Fuzhou. On it stands an old temple, Yong Quan Temple, dating back to the Tan Dynasty. Surprsingly, it is still in good condition.
The second day I’ll take you to the forest park in the north of Fuzhou. With deep valleys, green trees, flowing streams, the park provides us with freshness and beauty.
On the last day we’ll finish our tour by visiting Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, whose reputation lies in the celebrities who previously lived there and the rich local culture and history it preserves.
I hope my arrangements will make your travel enjoyable and worthwhile.
Yours,
Li Ming
