If the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的),it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. However, there are places in the rocks of the earth's crust where it isn't strongly held together—where faults exist.Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks,so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!
The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.Seven hundred people died and property (财产) damage amounted to about $425,000,000.The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.
One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon,Portugal,in 1755.The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908,in Calabria and Sicily,a quake killed about seventyfive thousand people. In 1915,in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.
Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo,Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.

Researchers have confirmed what parents have long believed:running around in the day means your child may well fall asleep faster at night.
But the study of 500 children provides a figure: for every hour they sit, they need three minutes longer to nod off.And the Archives of Disease in Childhood found those who took longer to get to sleep were no worse behaved.
Experts from Monash University in Melbourne and the University of Auckland looked at 519 sevenyearolds. The majority fell asleep within 45 minutes, and the average “sleep_latency” was 26 minutes.Children who were very physically active during the day tended to take less time to fall asleep, but the more prominent association was between being sedentary (需要久坐的)and taking longer to drift off. Those who fell asleep faster also tended to sleep for longer. There has been much discussion about the impact of reduced sleep duration on children.
“As short sleep duration is associated with obesity and lower cognitive performance, community emphasis on the importance of promoting healthy sleep in children is vitally important,”the researchers wrote.“This study emphasizes the importance of physical activity for children, not only for fitness, cardiovascular health and weight control, but also for sleep.”
They did not, however, find any evidence of bad behavior,as measured by professional charts, among those who took longer to fall asleep.Nor did they find any significantly different sleep latencies for children who went to bed after 9 p.m..
Mandy Gurney, founder of Children's Sleep Clinic Millpond, said the research was useful confirmation of the benefits of exercise for sleep as well as fitness and weight. But activity is not the beall and endall, and shouldn't be encouraged right before bedtime. What's essential is a routine winddown hour,a quiet time before bed.A warm bath, but no longer than 10 minutes, and then straight into a darkened bedroom.
“That way you make the most of the natural sleep trigger of the warm water, and you can cap it all off with a bedtime story.”
12.The writer's purpose of writing this passage is to________.
A. advise the readers how to let children go to sleep
B.explain the new findings to the readers
C.tell the readers the secrets of child sleep
D.show readers some strange phenomena about child sleep
13.The underlined phrase “sleep latency” used in the passage can best be defined as________.
A.the time falling asleep took
B.the time that a child spends sleeping
C.the period that a child wants to sleep
D.the situation that a child is sleeping
14.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The child who runs around in the day tends to fall asleep faster at night.
B.The child that falls asleep faster tends to sleep for longer.
C.The study confirmed the benefits of exercise for sleep, health and weight.
D.If you want to let the child sleep faster, you should make him exercise right before bedtime.
15.In which part of a newspaper can you read this passage?
A.Entertainment. B.Science & Technology.

thoughtful“沉思的,思考的”;normal“正常的,平常的”;practical“实际的,实践的,实用的”。
27.B 解析:考查词组搭配。change one's mind“改变主意/想法”。

be faced with“面临”。

A traffic accident happened in our school yard at 5:10 yesterday afternoon.A student, who was listening to the MP5 while riding a bike, was knocked down by a car which was driven by a relative of one teacher's.Luckily, the student just got slightly injured and was immediately sent to the school clinic. However, his bike was badly damaged.
Later I interviewed the headmaster and he said,“We have repeatedly emphasized that students shouldn't listen to music, use smartphones or do something distracting when they are walking or riding a bike, but they just close their ears to it.”
The accident reminds all of us that we should always obey the traffic rules and pay more attention to our own safety.
