A 9-year-old boy in Indian stopped a would-be carjacker(劫车贼)on Christmas Day from running away with his father’s truck.
Kevin Cooksey was inside the One Stop Express gas station in Kokomo buying medicine for his wife when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of his truck. Cooksey had left the engine running and the door unlocked.
“When I saw my truck door open, I was astonished, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’” Cooksey said.
His son, Larry, was sitting in the back seat. “As soon as he opened the door, I got frightened,” said Larry. “So I pulled out the gun and pointed it to his head.”
This was enough to make the carjacker think twice and he jumped out of the truck to try another car. Parked beside Cooksey’s truck was Kyle Sparling’s black Trailblazer. He too had left the engine running as he went into the store. The man got in Sparling’s SUV and took off.
“I didn’t know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him,” said Sparling.
As the man sped off, Cooksey told Sparling to get into his truck and the two men began to run after him. The icy winter conditions made the driving difficult, but the pair followed at a safe distance as the carjacker drove in a “Z” way. After a few miles, the carjacker knocked into the sign of a local business, American Tool and Party Rental. Cooksey and Sparling called the police to the place.
The police put 32-year-old Ollie Dunn into prison. Sparling’s car was damaged in the wheel, and the windscreen got cracked after the sign fell on it. “I was just glad he didn’t knock into anybody,” Sparling said. “That was my biggest fear, I think.”

A. He hit him with a gun.
B. He frightened him away with a gun.

D. Nobody was in but the engine was on.
26. What ended the carjacker’s escape?
A. The police stopped him.
B. His driving ability was very poor.

D. The SUV got damaged in an accident.
27. What does the underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refer to?

C. The carjacker might hurt somebody.
D. Spraling’s car was stolen.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a way to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let illnesses in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
28. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because________.
A. they believed disease could be spread in public baths
B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in
C. they lived healthily in a dirty environment
D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease
29. The underlined word“merit”in paragraph 3 means________.
A. weakness B. influence C. strength D. feature
30. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples.
B. By following the order of importance.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By making comparisons.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
B. To stress the role of dirt.
C. To introduce the history of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.
D
We humans spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This may sound like a lot of time, but it is not wasted. Sleep not only helps us stay healthy but it also helps our brains remember. Our brains need good sleep to remember what we do and learn during the other two thirds of our lives when we are awake.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that sleep helps improve brain performance by shrinking(收缩)synapses in the brain. A synapse is the area where cells pass messages to other cells.
Scientist Chiara Cirelli is a leader at the school’s Center for Sleep and Consciousness. She told the reporter that sleep is when the human brain mixes information it has learned while awake into its general collection of knowledge. Meanwhile, the brain forgets unimportant details. This forgetting is important. It makes space for new learning and new memories.
Cirelli said that the Centers research began with this hypothesis(假设): We sleep so that our brain can repair and refresh itself. She said the idea seems simple and reasonable. However, testing and discovering how it works has been extremely difficult.
Synapses are only about 20-40 nanometers(纳米)wide. The team began their study by measuring the size of the synapses to look for changes in these already tiny spaces between nerve cells. Cirelli says the process(过程) is difficult because“all the actual measurements of the synapses have to be done by hand.” The team had to wait until improvements in laboratory technology made it possible to see these tiny changes. A University of Wisconsin press release called the research a“huge job.”
Many research specialists worked for four years to photograph, rebuild and study certain areas of a mouse brain. The report also said the scientists measured 6,920 synapses.
Cirelli says they found that our synapses shrink as our brains clean themselves during sleep. We wake up refreshed and ready to fill those synapses with new information. The research findings are the result of years of hard work at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The researchers published their findings in the journal Science.
32. How does the brain help improve our memory while we are sleep?
A. By not forgetting any learnt knowledge.
B. By keeping learning new information.
C. By adding new knowledge to its old collection.
D. By repeating information learnt before.
33. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The size for the synapses.
B. The difficulties in the measuring work.
C. The preparations for the measuring work.
D. The result of the measuring work.
34. What can we infer about the research work?
A. The synapses were found bigger after a good night’s sleep.
B. The findings proved their hypothesis was right.
C. The team began their research as soon as they decided to.
D. The researchers carried out their work with a human brain.
35. What is the result of the research?
A. Sleep helps us keep healthy.
B. Sleep takes one-third of our lifetime.
C. Sleep helps the brain shrink.
D. Sleep helps us learn better.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Winter is a really fun time of the year—it’s great to have snowball fights and build snowmen. 36 When it’s cold outside and you’re not prepared, you can feel uncomfortable. Lucky for you, learning how to stay safe is not difficult.
37 Wearing thick clothes is the best way to stay warm in the cold. Depending on where you live and how cold it is, some kids may need more clothes, some less.
Take that hat. You maybe wear a large overcoat and ready to go, but are you forgetting something? 38 You’ll stay much warmer with a hat than without one—tons of body heat escapes right from your head.
Drink up. Sounds like advice for hot weather, not cold weather, right? 39 When you’re outside in the cold and breathing hard, your body loses a lot of water through your breath. And the best way to get that water back is to drink up!
Take it easy. Sometimes if you’re out having fun, it’s easy to forget to pay attention to your body. But if your body temperature drops even 4 or 5 degrees while you’re outside, it can make you feel terrible. 40 And if you ever feel weak, those are signs that you have to take it easy indoors for a while.
A. Have a snowball fight.
B. Pull a hat onto your head.
C. Well, the truth is that it’s good advice for both kinds of weather.
D. Love those clothes.
E. But you have to know how to be safe while you’re out having fun.
F. You can stay outside as long as possible to fully enjoy your snow days.
G. That’s why you need to be careful with your body’s signals.

Text 1
M: Miss, is there still time for a cup of coffee on this flight?
W: Yes, but you have to drink it fast because we’ll be landing soon.
Text 2
M: Excuse me for being late.
W: Never mind. You’re not too late. The film will start at 7:30. We still have five minutes to go.
Text 3
M: How do you like your tea, with milk or sugar?
W: Not too much milk and no sugar, please.
Text 4
M: Hi, can I speak with Mr. Johnson, please?
W: He’s out with our son. He’ll be back later on tonight. Can I take a message?
Text 5
W: I hope we have a good harvest this year.
M: Me too. But it hasn’t rained very often. The fields haven’t gotten too much water.
Text 6
M: Good morning, Sue! How is your holiday? Did you enjoy it?
W: Yes, I had a great time. I went to Inner Mongolia with some of my friends. We went mountain climbing near Baotou, and we stayed in a tent at night and cooked meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds cool! Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were nice. We met some farmers and they invited us to have tea in their house.
M: What an interesting experience!
Text 7
W: Excuse me. We’re making a survey. Would you like to answer some questions?
M: Sure.
W: Well, how much pocket money you get from your parents every month?
M: About 50 dollars.
W: Do you get pocket money in other ways?
M: Yes. Most of my friends take part-time jobs to get pocket money. So do I. I look after my neighbor’s baby every Friday evening. They pay me 12 dollars an hour. So I can get 48 dollars from them every week.
W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?
M: Well, I buy books for my study and sometimes I buy some CDs..
W: What a nice young man! Thank you for talking with us.
Text 8
W: Hi Edward! Haven’t seen you for a long time!
M: Cindy! I never imagined meeting you here! It’s been nearly three years since we left St. Matthew’s Primary School, hasn’t it?
W: Yeah. Time flies. How is your middle school life?
M: It’s great! I’m in Stowe Middle School and I’m a member of its theater group.
W: Really? The theater group is quite popular. It puts on very great plays and musicals.
M: Thanks. We have to practise very hard for every show. But I like it and it’s also great fun to go to the theater frequently and enjoy plays by famous artists.
W: Wow, that’s wonderful! I’m afraid it’s time for the film. Let’s go inside to see the film first.
Text 9
M: Lily, where do you like to eat?
W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It’s very near the city center. At lunch it’s full of office workers, but I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don’t have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What’s your favorite restaurant?
M: Well, it’s just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. Some truck drivers drink coffee and eat sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don’t think that’s true.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. This is Helen Green with What to Do Today on the air. It’s quite a warm and sunny Saturday. Now, if you’ve got nothing to do today, why not go to East Mountain in the city and get digging? That’s the message from Sussex Middle School. It is organizing a tree-planting activity in East Mountain.
Sussex Middle School is a member of the organization of Helping Blind Children. It is raising money for poor blind children in Asia by planting trees. A famous computer company agrees to give $30 for each tree to be planted in the city. Sussex Middle School is planning to plant 1,500 trees this weekend. Students and their parents are hoping to plant a half today. They are looking for volunteers to come along and help. Tree-planting experience is not necessary because there will be experts to give instructions. Thick gloves will be provided to protect your hands when you are doing the
digging. There’re also hats provided. And please do bring basic tools with you to dig holes and water trees. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend. So it could be really a nice day out for all the families.
This is What to Do Today. Thanks for your listening. Enjoy your day.
