Born in Japan to British parents on Oct.21, 1917, Fontaine and her older sister moved to the US as children. She won an Oscar as a vulnerable wife in the movie Suspicion in 1942. Hitchcock also cast Fontaine in the lead role in his first

We’re such complete opposites.” Sisters Fontaine and De Havilland were Hollywood opposites. The pair have both won Academy Awards for acting. Fontaine—born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland in Tokyo—had four marriages which ended in divorce. She held double British-US citizenship but she lived in the US for long. She starred opposite many of the Hollywood greats, including as Joan Crawford’ s opposite in her first major role in 1935’s No More Ladies. Fontaine also lined up with Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant—her co-star in Suspicion. The star was determined to play more willful roles later in her career, gaining recognition for Tender is the Night in 1962.
Her final major screen appearance came four years later in The witches, while her final screen credit was for the TV movie Good King Wenceslas in 1994 and died on Dec. 15, 2013.

Talking plants might sound like characters in a fairy tale. But recent scientific studies have shown that plants communicate with each other and with other living things in a surprising number of ways. To understand them, scientists say, we just have to learn their language. Farmers are especially interested in what plants have to say.

“Plants are able to communicate with all sorts of organisms (有机体). They can communicate with giant bacteria, with other plants and with insects. They do this chemically,” said Cahill, an Ecology Professor of the University of Alberta in Canada.
Plant scientists are just beginning to understand this chemical “language”. Cahill says studies have shown, for example, that plants can evaluate conditions in their immediate environment and take appropriate actions. Plants have an ability, for example, to signal pain or discomfort caused by anything from temperature extremes to an insect attack. Jack Schultz, a professor of chemical ecology at the University of Missouri, says when a plant senses that it’s being eaten, it cannot walk away from trouble; on the contrary, it will release a chemical vapor that alerts other plants nearby.
“Their language is a chemical language, and it involves chemicals that move through the air that are easy to be changeable, and most of all are smells that we are familiar with,” Schultz explained.
“All plants responded to the attack by changing their chemistry to defend themselves,” Schultz recalled. “But we were quite surprised to find that nearby plants also changed their chemistry to defend themselves, even though they were not part of the experiment.”
Studies have also shown that plants under attack release pleasant chemicals. Those chemicals attract friendly insects that attack the pests eating the plant.

As is known to everyone, animals are our friends and enjoy the equal right to live happily on earth. However, more than 12 000 species are in danger of extinction.
There are several reasons for this.
The habitats of some animals are disappearing because of pollution and climate change. For example, the global warming melts the ice of the North Pole, endangering the polar bear. Besides, many animals are killed for their body parts. For instance, the Tibetan antelopes are killed because their wool can be made into shawls, which can bring huge profits.
Fortunately, the governments have set up nature reserves and introduced bans on such illegal trade. Police are getting tough with poachers and dealers. But it’s also common people’s responsibility to protect them. To avoid more damage to the environment we should live in an environment friendly way. Never buy products made from body parts of endangered animals and tell more people about the situations of the animals. Only when everyone is involved will we save them from extinction.

Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s orphans and patient too often felt forgotten, form in the mind an idea of showing them that they were not. He did this by the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed them on a Saturday in October. In the years that followed, other residents began to participate in the event, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Day became an occasion for acknowledging others with a kind act or a small remembrance. Soon the idea began spreading to other cities all
