If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about speed of reading?
Some people read very rapidly, while others read very slowly. But which one is better?
The rapid reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may read so rapidly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.
The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.
So, you see, either a rapid reader or a slow reader is not really a good one.
10
If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about speed of reading.
1. Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.
2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, science and history books, and Maths problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each important step and understand each important idea.
3.Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.
4. In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.
( )1. What should be read rapidly?
A. Directions for making something.
B. Maths problems.
C. Science and history books.
D. Storybooks, newspapers, personal letters, etc.
( )2.What is the important thing you should keep in mind about speed of reading?
A. To read as fast as you can.
B. To fit your reading speed to your needs.
C. To read as slowly as possible.
D. To keep your reading at a certain speed.
( )3. Which title best gives the main idea of the passage?
A. Something about Careful Reading. B. Be a Rapid Reader.

Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full, of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish. The lake water is polluted(污染). It is in a colour of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.
How did this happen? First, we must think about how water gets into LakePonkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog, so the rainwater was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals(化学品) in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects(昆虫). There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines or shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rainwater picks up all the chemicals from homes and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas(油和汽)from boats get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it.
10
Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people's lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.
4. In the past, the water in Lake Ponkapog was made clean by .
A. forests B. rain C. birds D. fish
5.Chemicals from homes and businesses .
A. are always clean B. can help the animals
C. are good for the lake D. get into the rainwater
6.Cleaner rainwater will mean .
A. more boats on the lake B. more dirty things in the lake
C. a cleaner lake D. a dirtier lake
7.To save Lake Ponkapog, people need to ..

C. grow fewer plants in the gardens D. use more motorboats on the lake

Before the 19th century, thousands of languages have been made to achieve one dream but only one made it. People were trying to find a way to end people’s communication trouble and create peace between each other. Then one day Esperanto (世界语) went into people’s eyes. It was the most widely spoken man-made language and Ludwik Zamenhof was its creator. He spent his whole life on the amazing language.
Zamenhof was born on December 15, 1859 in the town of Biatystok which is now part of Poland. He considered his native language to be his father’s Russian, but also his mother’s Yiddish. As he grew older, he spoke more Polish, which later became the native language of his children. His father was a teacher of German, and he also spoke that language often. Later he learned French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and English, and had an interest in Italian, Spanish and Lithuanian.
The population of Biatystok was made up of three groups: Poles, Germans and Belarusians. There were often quarrels among these groups. Zamenhof was frustrated by the many quarrels. He supposed that the main reason for this was the misunderstanding because there was no one common language. Then he began to create a new language, and hoped it would realize the ideal of peace and understanding. During his middle school days, after comparing with many languages he had known, he created a universal (通用的) language. After years of hard work, he finally created Esperanto.
Ludwik Zamenhof died on April 14, 1917, and was buried in the Jewish Cemetery on Okopowa Street in Warsaw.

During a winter storm in 1919, one dog managed to save the lives of the people on the ship Ethie. Today, people still tell the story of the dog.
In December 1919, Ethie was travelling along the coast of northern Canada. Without warning, the ship ran into a bad storm. Because of high winds and heavy snow, the captain could not tell where he was going. Sailing too close to the shore (岸), the ship could not move because of some rocks. Ethie was in danger.
The captain decided to save the people on his ship. He thought it was too dangerous to try to reach the shore by lifeboat, so he sent up flares (闪光信号) to call for help. People saw the flares and rushed to the beach. The crew (船员) tried to throw a rope (绳子) to them, but there seemed to be no way to get a rope to the shore.
In the early 1900s ships often carried a large kind of dog called a Newfoundland. Newfoundlands are excellent swimmers. During sea journeys, Newfoundlands would bring back things that had fallen off the ship or even save people from the sea.
The Newfoundland on Ethie was named Tang. The captain decided that Tang offered their best hope of survival (幸存). He gave the dog a long rope. Holding the rope between his teeth, Tang jumped into the turbulent water. He fought his way through high waves and strong winds. Finally he reached the beach.
The people on the shore took the rope. The rope became the ship’s lifeline.
Because of Tang, all the people on Ethie landed on the beach safely. He was given a special medal for being a hero. Tang wore the medal f or the rest of his life.

Body language sometimes speaks louder than words. Body language can tell you whether someone is interested or not, and whether someone is happy to see you or
10
not. One of the most important things that body language can tell, however, is whether a person is lying or not. Here’s how you can determine whether someone is telling you the truth or not, based on body language alone.
The eyes are said to be the windows of the soul and one of the things that the little windows will show you is whether someone is honest or not. When talking to people, look at their eyes and judge whether they are turning away from your close watch or not. People are usually subconsciously(潜意识地) uncomfortable when lying to the person that they are talking to. Besides lying, eyes that have a lot of movement usually show that the person is about to lie or that the person has told a lie.
People who lie often touch their noses and other parts of their faces. If you notice that your partner or someone talking to you unconsciously touches his nose, this probably means that he is lying. The reason why people touch their faces when they lie is that lying usually causes an increase in blood circulation, leading to an itch in the small blood vessels(血管) in the nose or in the cheeks.
Another common body language suggestion that someone is lying is when a person crosses his arms. Crossing the arms means that the person is both being defensive(防御的)and shutting himself off. People who are speaking the truth will usually make an open gesture(姿态)with the arms on the side to show that they are not hiding anything. Subconsciously, however, people will cross their arms when they are lying.

One possible version:
The rabbit lost the first race against the tortoise. For the second race, he didn’t sleep at all. At last he won the race. Soon they decided to have a third race.
This time, as everyone can guess, the rabbit ran faster. But there was a river before the finishing line. When he arrived at the river bank, he had no idea how to cross the river and had to wait. After a few minutes, the tortoise got to the river bank, too. He told the rabbit that winning or losing was not so important. He suggested the rabbit sit on his back so that they could cross the river and both win. The rabbit agreed. They swam across the river. In the end, they reached the finishing line together.
I can learn the spirit of teamwork from the story. If we all help each other, the world will become more beautiful.
