The Hawaiian Islands are situated about two thousand miles away from North America, right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Despite(尽管) the distance the islands actually make up the fiftieth state of the United States. The islands were all formed by volcanic eruption and on the largest of the islands, Hawaii, or the Big Island, there are still two active volcanoes, the Mauna Loa and the Kilauea, which still erupt every few years.
On the Hawaiian islands the natives have a particularly strange way of indicating directions. They don’t use the north, south, east and west system common to the rest of the world. They use the mauka and makai system. Mauka means “mountain”. The mountains in Hawaii are always at the center of the islands, as these are volcanic islands. Makai means “the sea”. The islands are small and the system is simple. Wherever you want to visit, it can always be described in terms of where it lies in relation to the mountains and the sea. A typical conversation between a native Hawaiian and a tourist might go as follow.
TOURIST: Excuse me! Could you tell me where the Sheraton Hotel is?
HAWAIIAN: Well… Let me see! From here it’s two blocks mauka, and then one block makai. You can’t miss it!

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June.
Mother’s Day was proclaimed a day for national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Ann Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation.
In 1909, Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart. After her mother died, he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910, the first Father’s Day was observed in Spokane. Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to established Father’s Day as a national commemorative day, in 1972.
These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?
If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.
Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some o f the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.
11
You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes yo u as a person.
The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.
31. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends.
A. admitting your shortcomings B. self criticism C. modesty D. confidence
32. If you are not liked by a person, _________ .
A. you should find the reason in yourself
B. you’d better talk with the person face to face
C. you may not be the one to be blamed
D. you and that person misunderstand each other
33. We can learn from the third paragraph that ____________ .
A. your good qualities may turn out to be your flaws
B. your weakness may also be your strengths in some way
C. your negative qualities cause a person to reject you
D. you’ll have few friends if your flaws are bigger than your good qualities
34. Which of the following is true according to the author?
A. It is important to lose weight.
B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.
C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.
D. If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve yo ur physical beauty.
35. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A. How to find your good qualities.
B. How to make friends.
11
C. How to make self criticism.
D. How to lose weight.

第三节(满分25分)
June 3, 2005 Dear Editor, Recently, our class have had a heated discussion about whether the Beijing Zoo should be moved out of the city. Some of my classmates are in favor of the move. They say large crowds of tourists to the zoo will result in traffic jams. They also say that once moved, animals will have more space and better living conditions in the suburbs. However, other students are against the idea, saying that the Beijing Zoo, built in 1906, has a history of 100 years, and is well–known at home and abroad. So it should remain where it is. What’s move more ore, moving may cause the death of some animals. To move or not, this is a big decision which has to be made by people in Beijing. Yours truly, Li Hua
