When it realized how 42 the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, 43 its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.‎ The 44 of the story, I think, is that in some strange sense we are more whole when we are 45 something. Now, the father and daughter who have no connection to Atlanta are meeting for the first time at Chops Steakhouse in Buckhead, North Atlanta. Antoniou was born in Southern California, but recently moved to Newnan, Georgia. Dr Becker lives in Wichita, Kansas.‎ ‎“I started looking for her and I could not find her. I could not find her mother. So, I thought maybe one day my daughter would Google her name and maybe she would find me that way and five days ago she found me,” Becker said.‎ He named the website after her and while Antoniou was typing her name in, “Scott Becker looking for April”, the website he created nearly 10 years ago, popped up. The two communicated by e-mail and over the phone for the past five days. Becker 11‎ ‎ said he confirmed her mother’s maiden name, her birthday, middle name and some other specific details only his daughter would know.‎ ‎“He is absolutely my father. But, it all happens when it happens for a reason.”‎ Over the past 30 years, Dr Becker says he has hired private investigators, and been tricked by people claiming to be his daughter. It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.‎ Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?‎ To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured ‎ 11‎ his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.‎ On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science.‎ ‎60. The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to________.‎ ‎ A. show where science can be applied B. show the value of Brooks’s new book C. remind the reader of the importance of science D. explain why many writers use science in their works 61. According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?‎ ‎ A. Its strong basis. B. Its convincing points. C. Its clear writing. D. Its strong characters.‎ ‎62. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 3?‎ ‎ A. introducing scientific theories B. telling a story ‎ C. the science of child development D. the theory of sexual attraction ‎63. What is the author’s general attitude towards the book?‎ ‎ A. Contradictory(矛盾的) B. Supportive.‎ ‎ C. Cautious. D. Critical.‎ ‎64. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Problems with the book. B. Brooks’ life experience.‎ ‎ C. Death of the characters. D. Brooks’ translation skills. ‎ ‎ C On October 24, 1929 —“Black Thursday”—a wave of panic selling of stocks swept the New York Stock Exchange. The Great Depression began. By 1932, thousands of banks and businesses had failed. Industrial production was cut in half, farm income had fallen by more than half, wages had decreased 60 percent, new investment was down 90 percent and one out of every four workers was unemployed.‎ The Republican president, Herbert Hoover was unable to take measures to deal with the economic collapse. So in the 1932 election, he was defeated by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, who promised “a New Deal for the American people”.‎ Within the “Hundred Days”, Roosevelt rushed through Congress a number of laws to aid the recovery of the economy. The Civilian Conservation Corps put young men to work in reforestation and flood.‎ The Federal Emergency Relief Administration aided state and local relief funds. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration paid farmers to reduce production, thus raising crop prices. The Tennessee Valley Authority built a network of dams in the Tennessee River area to generate electricity, control floods and manufacture fertilizer. The National Recovery Administration regulated fair competition among 11‎ ‎ businesses and ensured bargaining rights and minimum wages for workers.‎ The Social Security Act of 1935 established(建立) contributory old age(养老金) and survivors’ pensions, as well as a joint federal state program of unemployment insurance.‎ The Work Progress Administration was one of the most effective of the New Deal measures. Financed by taxes collected by the federal government, the WPA created millions of jobs by undertaking the construction of roads, bridges, airports and other public buildings. It kept workers in the job, thus preserving their skills and their self-respect.‎ The New Deal programs did not end the Depression. But the economy improved as a result of this program of government intervention(干预).‎ ‎65. Roosevelt made his New Deal programs effective through ________.‎ A. his presidential power B. government taxation C. congress reputation D. government intervention ‎ D Being a mother is apparently not like it was in the good old days.‎ ‎ Today’s parents yearn for the golden age that their own mothers enjoyed in the 1970s and 1980s, researchers found. Mothers have less time to themselves and feel under greater pressure to handle work and family life than the previous generation. As a result, 88 per cent said they felt guilty about the lack of time they spent with their children.‎ The survey of 1,000 mothers also found that more than a third said they had less time to themselves than their mothers did – just three hours a week or 26 minutes a day. And 64 per cent said this was because they felt they ‘had’ to go out to work, while nearly a third (29 per cent) said they were under constant pressure to 11‎ ‎ be the ‘perfect mother’, the report found.‎ Other findings showed social networking and parenting websites, as well as technology such as Skype, were important in providing help and support among female communities. Kate Fox, a member of the Social Issues Research Centre, which conducted the survey for Procter & Gamble, said: ‘With increasing pressure on mothers to work a “double shift” — to be the perfect mother as well as a wage-earner — support networks are more important than ever. ‎ It comes as a separate report examining childcare in the leading industrialized nations found that working mothers in Britain spend just 81 minutes a day caring for their children as a ‘primary activity’. Mothers who stay at home, on the other hand, manage twice as much time – more than two and a half hours – looking after their offspring, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.‎ ‎ Critics say the pressure on women to work long hours, and leave their offspring in the hands of nurseries or childminders, is putting the well-being of their children at risk.‎ ‎ The study also reveals that, despite the fact that more and more modern mothers go out to work, the burden of childcare still falls on them - even if their husband is not in work. A father who is not in work tends to spend just 63 minutes a day looking after his child - 18 minutes less than a mother who goes out to work. Working fathers spare less than three quarters of an hour with their children.‎ ‎70. What does the passage mainly talk about?‎ ‎ A. The good old days of mothers in the 1970s and 1980s.‎ ‎ B. The great sufferings of today’s children.‎ ‎ C. The statistics of working mothers and full-time mothers.‎ ‎ D. The big problems that today’s working mothers face.‎ ‎71. What does the underlined phrase “yearn for” probably means ___________.‎ A. hate B. miss C. abandon D. control ‎72. Which of the following problems is NOT mentioned in the passage?‎ A. Today’s mothers have less time left for their children and themselves.‎ B. The working mothers can hardly strike the balance between work and family.‎ C. Most of the mothers can not control their husbands nowadays.‎ D. Modern fathers do not spend enough time with their children.‎ ‎73. From paragraph 4, we can infer that ___________.‎ ‎ A. working mothers can seek help on line ‎ B. Skype is a very famous expert in studying social issues ‎ C. working mothers’ double shift is to be a wife and a mother ‎ D. Kate Fox has opened a website offering help to working mothers ‎74.
