Not quite 5 , but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.
Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament (锦标赛) .

10

On the way home, the boy and the master 11 every move in each and every match. Then the boy gathered the courage to ask 12 was really on his mind.
“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one 13 ?”
“You won for two reasons,” the master answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your 14 arm.”
The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest 15 .

Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart, but some people can only remember things when they say or do the again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.
A good memory is a great help in learning languages. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. Below are some suggestions given by the English children posted on the website about how to help Africa. Which one do you think is the best?
I think being healthy is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we
give is spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better
health care.
— Robin, aged 16, Birmingham
I think the most important thing is to improve the education of the African countries. There is
an old saying, “If you give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day. If you teach him how to
fish, you’ll feed him for lifetime.” We need to help people to help themselves, not just
throw money at the problem when it appears.
——Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool
People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster (灾难)
like the earthquake. It’s good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should
give a small part of their salary(工资)to charity. If everyone did that, it would make
a big difference.
— Mary, aged 14, Stratford
10
Giving money to charity can help, but it’s not the final answer. I think what these countries
need is a good government.
— Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle
The best thing we can do is to send experts like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the
people to help themselves.
— Robert, aged 16, Cardiff
( )1. Who pays more attention to Africans’ health care?
A. Mary. B. Robin. C. Rebecca. D. Robert.
( )2. Which two children have the similar opinions?
A. Mary and Rebecca. B. Bethany and Mary.
C. Rebecca and Bethany. D. Rebecca and Robert.
( )3. What does Rebecca mean by saying “We need to help people to help themselves”?
A. We should help the teachers in Africa to improve their teaching ways.
B. We should help people in Africa to build a good government.
C. We should help the African people develop skills to make a living.
D. We should help the African people build more schools.
( )4. What is Mary’s opinion?
A. Everyone should do what they can to help the African people.
B. It is not good for people to give so much money to the African people.
C. It is very important to have a good government.
D. We can send more teachers there to help the African people.
( )5. Where are these suggestions posted?
A. In the textbook. B. In the guidebook.
C. On the website. D. In the magazine.

In almost every big university in the United States football is a favorite sport. American football is not like soccer Players sometimes kick the ball, but they also throw the ball and run with it. They try to take it to the other end of the field. They have four chances to move the ball ten yards. They can carry it or throw it. If they move it to the end of the field, they receive six points. This is called a touch—down. It is difficult to move the ball. Eleven men on the team try to stop the man who has the ball. If the man does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball to the other team. Each university wants its team to win. Thousands of people come to watch. They all yell for their favorite team. Young men and women called cheerleaders come on the field to help the people yell more. They dance and jump while they yell.
Each team plays ten or eleven games each season. The season begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the season ends. It is lucky to have a good neighbor as much as it is unfortunate to have a bad one. Nowadays, the people who live near us are mostly not friends by choice, nor relatives by birth, but are probably acquaintances(熟人) by chance. In my opinion, a good neighbor is often associated with such virtues(美德) as tolerance(宽容), respect, help and love.
Without tolerance and respect, neighbors are not likely to live in peace. 1 . They do not do certain things to annoy people living next door. They don’t ask about their neighbors’ personal life. They don’t blame neighbors’ children for playing in their yards. 2 . Tolerance is another important aspect of a good neighbor. When sometimes things turn out to be unbearable, for example, a noisy party, nothing makes us more tolerant than being there. In fact, neighbors’ relationship needs to be coped with carefully.
3 One advantage of good neighbors is that they can help and love each other, nearer than most relatives and friends at a distance. Indeed, a helping hand from a good neighbor cannot be replaced even by the faraway support . 4
Tolerance, respect, help and love may contribute to a more enjoyable life in the neighborhood. However, in this modern society, sometimes we do not even know who our next-door neighbor is.
So start being a good neighbor by knocking on the next door and saying hello. 5
A. It is important for us to be kind to our neighbors.
B. By doing so, he or she may be repaid in kind
C. Life would be different when you live in a friendly neighborhood.
D. The urgent needs among close neighbors can even save a life.
E. Help and love should necessarily be the key to being good neighbors.
F. A good neighbor always shows respect to neighbors.

Have you ever tried to write a poem (诗歌)? It’s easier than you might think. Just pick up a pen and begin practicing. Here are the steps to write a poem.
Choose your topic. 1__________ Some people can start writing poems without really deciding what to write about; when their pen or pencil hits the paper the words just flow (畅流). Most people, on the other hand, need a topic and as a beginner, this is the best way to start. It’s easier to write a good poem about something you know well or you have experienced.
Free write for five minutes about your topic. Then go back and read it. Are any words or phrases (短语) especially good? 2__________ For example, if you are describing something (i.e. a bird), write down descriptive words about it (i.e. looks, colors), and the type of story you would like to tell about (i.e. the bird fell out of a tree). If you are writing about an event in your life, write down your feelings and thoughts (想法) of that event.
10
Write your poem. Remember, a poem doesn’t have to rhyme (押韵). 3__________ But it should show your feelings of the topic. And it should sound nice to you.
Have a friend read your poem aloud to you. 4__________ If not, go back and rewrite the parts you don’t like.
5__________ Read it to others. Say it aloud to yourself. Put it somewhere if you want.
A. Do you like the way it sounds?
B. Mark them and use them in your poem.
C. Enjoy your poem.
D. What would you like your poem to be about?
E. It doesn’t have to use sentences, either.
