Before her album “Come Away With Me” arrived, no one expected the quiet girl to take eight Grammies.‎ On February 10, Jones returned with her long-awaited new album, “Feel like Home,” still without much publicity.‎ For the talented young girl, following up the huge presentation isn’t much pressure: “I want people to like it, but I don’t expect it to do as well as the last one.” That was kind of strange. But I like this record; it’s sweet.‎ Born on March 30, ‎1979 in New York City, Jones grew up in Dallas, Texas with her mother and thanks her for her musical style. “My mom had this eight-album Billie Holiday set. I picked out one disc I liked and played it over and over again.”‎ Jones began playing the piano at seven and discovered singing while in high school. She majored in jazz piano at the University of North Texas for two years before taking a trip to New York City. The trip started out as just a summer trip away from college, but Jones quickly knew that she would not be leaving for a while.‎ ‎“The music scene is so huge. I found it very exciting. I especially enjoyed hearing amazing songwriters at places like ‘the Living Room.’ I just couldn’t leave.”‎ She started visiting local songwriters and at last started a band with local song writer Jesse Harris and bassist Lee Alexander, who wrote most songs for “Come Away With Me” and “Feels Like Home.”‎ ‎“We’ve always done the music we like. I feel like we are all honest, the band and me, and that’s really all that matters,” Jones says.‎ 24‎ When asked about the advantage of fame, Jones simply says, “I’ve got a nicer apartment now, but that’s about it.” She pauses a minute and amends that answer, “My old apartments was nice, too, though. I don’t want that owner to get mad.”‎ 66. The album “Come Away With Me”____________.‎ A. made Norah Jones known to the public right after its release.‎ B. isn’t well received.‎ C. has won many honors for Norah Jones.‎ D. sells well at home and abroad.‎ 67. Norah Jones’ talents in singing were discovered ____________.‎ A. by her mother when she was still young.‎ B. at the age of seven C. when she was studying in high school.‎ D. after she took a trip to New York City 69. The passage suggests Norah Jones ___________.‎ A. cares more about others than herself.‎ B. prefers to live in the old apartment rather than the new one.‎ C. owes her success to her partners—Harris and Alexander.‎ D. finds it pleasant to work with her band and songwriters.‎ ‎(B)‎ Below are some classified ads from the Internet.‎ Health & Beauty ‎ V2 cigs is undeniably the leader in the electronic cigarette industry.‎ ‎ If you are a smoker who wants to quit soon, we will illustrate just some of the most important features and benefits of V2 e-cigarettes:‎ Effectively satisfy the desire for tobacco smoking with V2 Cigs 24‎ V2 Cigs is more affordable than its competitors Enjoy smoking without the unpleasant by-products of tobacco smoking: No ash, smoke or bad breath.‎ Why not have a try! http:// www.nationwidesmokes.com Welcome to Day Spa& Beauty Salon ‎ Our beauty salon has been offering professional beauty treatments since 1997. On one side stand those who have begun to see clothes dryers as wasteful consumers of energy (up to 6% of total electricity) and powerful emitters of carbon dioxide (up to a ton of CO2 per household every year). As an alternative, they are turning to clotheslines as part of what Alexander Lee, an environmentalist, ‎ 24‎ calls “what-I-can- do environmentalism.”‎ But on the other side are people who oppose air-drying laundry outside on visual grounds. Increasingly, they have persuaded community and homeowners associations (HOAs) across the U.S. to ban outdoor clotheslines, which they say not only look unattractive but also lower surrounding property values. Those actions, in turn, have led to a right-to-dry movement that is pressing for making laws to protect the choice to use clotheslines. Only three states--Florida, Hawaii and Utah--have laws written broadly enough to protect clotheslines. Right-to-dry advocates argue that there should be more.‎ Matt Reck is the kind of eco-conscious guy who feeds his trees with bathwater and recycles condensation drops(冷凝水) from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But Otto Hagen, president of Reck’s HOA in Wake Forest, N.C., notified him that a neighbor had complained about his line. The Recks ignored the warning and still dry their clothes on a rope in the yard. “Many people claim to be environmentally friendly but don’t take matters into their own hands,” says Reck. HOAs Hagen has decided to hold off taking action. “I'm not going to go crazy,” he says. “But if Matt keeps his line and more neighbors complain, I'll have to address it again.”‎ North Carolina lawmakers tried and failed earlier this year to insert language into an energy bill that would expressly prevent HOAs from regulating clotheslines. But the issue remains a touchy one with HOAs and real estate agents. “Most visual restrictions are rooted, to a degree, in the belief that homogenous (统一协调的 ) external appearance are supportive of property value,” says Sara Stubbins, executive director of the Community Association Institute’s North Carolina chapter. In other words, associations worry that housing prices will fall if prospective buyers think their would-be neighbors are too poor to afford dryers.‎ Alexander Lee dismisses the notion that clotheslines devalue property, advocating that the idea “needs to change in light of global warming.” “We all have to do at least something to decrease our carbon footprint,” Alexander Lee says.‎ ‎74. What is NOT mentioned as a disadvantage of using clothes dryers?‎ 24‎ ‎ A. Electricity consumption. B. Air pollution.‎ ‎ C. Waste of energy. D. Ugly looking.‎ ‎75. Which of the following is INCORRECT?‎ ‎ A. Opposers think air-drying laundry would devalue surrounding property.‎ ‎ B. Opposers consider the outdoor clothesline as an eyesore to the scenery.‎ ‎ C. Right-to-dry movements led to the pass of written laws to protect clotheslines.‎ ‎ D. Most of states in the US have no written laws to protect clotheslines.‎ ‎76. In the last paragraph Alexander Lee recommends that_____________________.‎ ‎ A. clotheslines should be banned in the community.‎ ‎ B. clotheslines wouldn't lessen the property values.‎ ‎ C. the globe would become warmer and warmer.‎ ‎ D. we should protect the environment in the community.‎ ‎77. An appropriate title for the passage might be____________________.‎ ‎ A. Opinions on Environmental Protection.‎ ‎ B. Opinions on Air-drying Laundry.‎ ‎ C. What-I-Can-Do Environmentalism.‎ D. Restrictions on Clotheslines.‎ Section C Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. ‎ In August, the Obama administration announced plans for a new college rating system to be implemented by the 2015 school year that would eventually determine federal funding for various institutions. “Colleges that keep their tuition down and are providing high quality education are the ones that are going to see their tax payer funding go up,” President Obama said in a speech outlining the plan at the University of New York at Buffalo. “It is time to stop funding schools that are not producing good results.”‎ The Administration’s objective is to make college more accessible and ‎ 24‎ affordable for students from different background. The president’s Secretary of Education, Duncan hopes to address concerns that American’s college graduation rates have not kept pace with the rest of the world. “A generation ago, we led the world in college graduation rates,” he said, “now we are 12.” To succeed in America, it has become increasingly important to get a college degree. In an earlier meeting, according to Governor Mary Fallin of Oklahoma, only 40% of jobs in America can be done with just a high school degree, and two thirds of those jobs in America can be done with just a high school degree, and two thirds of those jobs pay an annual salary of $25,000 or less. Duncan said the jobs that once gave high school graduates a living wage are “not coming back.”‎ That’s why the rating system, which has yet to be developed, will focus on helping the most needy students who are less likely to graduate from college. The system will look primarily at “three performance buckets: access to needy students, percentage of students getting Pell grants(佩尔奖学金), and affordability,” Duncan said. It will measure these against outcomes like graduation rates, graduate earnings, and number of graduates earning advanced degrees. Duncan declined to offer any specific on how the Administration would consider post-graduate employment in their ratings. “Whether you choose Wall Street or the Peace Crops, do you have the skills you need to do what you want to do?” he said.‎ The plan has been met with mixed reactions from members of the higher education community, some of whom are concerned that colleges could be negatively affected in the ratings for serving the most needy kids, the exact group that rating system is designed to help. To ease concerns that the schools could be affected for the difficult task of educating a larger share of disadvantaged students, Duncan said they would only compare colleges with similar missions, avoiding “apples to oranges” comparisons, and would weigh improvement in performance at various schools as carefully as absolute outcomes. “We’re more interested in where you are going than where you have been,” he said.‎ ‎ (Note: answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS)‎ 24‎ 78. It will be very likely that before the 2015 school year, only colleges _______________ will get more funds from the federal government.‎ 79. Everyone is going to drive electrically powered cars. So in a few years people won't worry about running out of gas. Some of the large automobile companies are really moving ahead with this new technology. F & C Motors, a major auto company, for example, is holding a press conference next week. At the press conference the company will present its new, electronically operated models.‎ Transportation in the future won't be limited to the ground. Many people predict that traffic will quickly move to the sky. In the coming years, instead of radio reports about road conditions and highway traffic, news reports will talk about traffic jams in the sky. But the sky isn't the limit. In the future, you’ll probably 24‎ ‎ even be able to take a trip to the moon. Instead of listening to regular airplane announcements, you'll hear someone say, “The spacecraft to the moon leaves in ten minutes. Please check your equipment. And remember, no more than ten ounces of carry-on baggage are allowed.”‎ Questions:‎ 1. What will be used to power cars in the next few decades?‎ 2. What will future news reports focus on when talking about transportation?‎ 3. What will passengers be asked to do when they travel to the moon?‎ Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. ‎ When John and Victoria Church arrived in New York from London for a one-year stay, they brought no furniture with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a way of furnishing an apartment or a house that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses.‎ Why do people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? Many kinds of people: international business, government officials, airline workers, young married couples—the people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another—find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they will soon grow to dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they rent. And people whose work takes them from place to place save themselves the trouble of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new home.‎ 4. According to the passage, who are more likely to rent furnishings?‎ 5. Why do people who move frequently rent furnishings?‎ 6. What might be the best title for the passage?‎ Section C Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.‎ 24‎ M: Are you Emma White, from Canada?‎ W: Hello! Yes, I am. I registered this summer course by mail on 9th January. Are you Mr. Fang?‎ M: Yes. I’m a teacher of this course. You are welcome to study mandarin.‎ W: Thanks a lot. This is why I want to know more about Chinese culture.‎ M: OK, I quite understand and I think you will gain a lot in our summer course and good luck to you!‎ W: Thanks!‎ Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.‎ Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation. ‎ W: Now. My wife and I get along pretty well.‎ W: And how about your work?‎ M: I have been working a lot lately—10 to 11 hours a day.‎ W: Maybe you should take a vacation and just have a good rest for a while.‎ M: Yeah, well, but I can’t right now. We are in the middle of some important business.‎ W: I see. And is that business going on well?‎ M: Well, it doesn’t appear so good at the moment.‎ W: So you are worried about that, aren’t you?‎ M: I guess so.‎ W: Do you like your job, Mr. Brown?‎ M: Yes, of course.‎ W: I suggest you should consider a job change.‎ M: But it is rather hard to find a new job at my age, you know.‎ W: Yes, I understand.
