Urbanization
Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago. 61_ In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history--- a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.
Britain was only the beginning. 62 The process of urbanization--- the migration (迁移) of people from the countryside to the city--- was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.
In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. 63
Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies. It took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities. _64 . Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move it from farm to city.
Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country. 65 Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.
A. That kept cities very small.
B. The rest live in small towns.
C. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.
D. Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.
E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.
F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.
Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.
Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing
- 18 -
is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far
more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.
It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的) In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
69. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A. preparing a topic list first B. focusing on one’s own mind
C. directing the talk to the desired results D. experiencing the speaker’s inside world

A. How to listen well. B. What to listen to.

C. they had partners to talk to. D. they knew the roots of problems.

Dave needed to pack for Saturday’s fishing trip. He went into his storeroom, where he had more than 20 fishing rods (钓鱼竿). He went fishing twice a year at Big Bear, a huge lake in southern California about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.
California tried to encourage the fishing industry by arranging for a Free Fishing Day twice a year, once in June and once in September. That was enough for Dave. He went mostly because it was a social event with a few friends. Even the scenic drive up a twisty (蜿蜒的) road was worth the trip. Not to mention the big, beautiful houses and trees that surrounded the shore of the lake.
Packing was an important project. Dave had even created a computer file (文件夹) named Fishing Trip. It was a checklist of 45 things to take to Big Bear. He took two rods, because on Free Fishing Day you were allowed to fish with two rods instead of the usual one rod. He took a hooded (有兜帽的) sweatshirt, jeans, two pairs of socks, a heavy hooded jacket, winter gloves and a scarf. He also took shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a big hat and a lightweight raincoat. If you go to Big Bear in June, you’d better be prepared for hot or cold, rain or shine.
He packed a couple of magazines to read just in case the fish weren’t biting. He and his friends joked that the fish were always biting — where you just left or where you were headed to.
After about an hour and a half, Dave had gathered all the items on his list into a tidy pile (堆) next to his door. He went to bed knowing that the next day’s weather and fishing were unpredictable (难以预料的), but the good time with his friends was a given.

A. Dave didn’t go out to fish except go to Big Bear Lake

C. Dave was a fishing lover and was going to attend the fishing activities
D. Big Bear Lake was a good place for sightseeing instead of fishing
74. Dave thought that the Free Fishing Day held twice a year was ____.
A. limited B. satisfying C. unbelievable D. surprising
75. If you’d like to go fishing on Free Fishing Day, you should ____.

A. take only one fishing rod according to the rules
B. go fishing there in September rather than in June
C. consider the weather first and prepare carefully for your trip
D. take a computer recording what you should take with you
76. We can infer from the last paragraph that Dave ____.
A. was sure that he would have a great time with his friends the next day
B. was eager to go fishing at Big Bear but didn’t like to prepare for it
C. was sure that the next day’s weather and fishing would be quite good
D. couldn’t decide whether he would go fishing at Big Bear the next day

第二节 读写任务(满分30分)
阅读下面短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文
To many people even the word “work” sounds unpleasant, not necessarily because they are lazy. The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office, may work hard at the weekend, painting the house or digging the garden.
What is the reason, then? In most cases, it is because these people simply do not enjoy the Job they are doing .It does not give them any real satisfaction. It may be quite easy, like making up wooden boxes, but it is very boring. Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one, such as attaching a door handle to a car. But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say: I have made something!
Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this is the way society is organized, No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect. Society cannot function a single day without the “dull and boring” jobs.

第二节:读写任务
From the passage, we know that the author mainly stressed the importance of small and ordinary work , such as cleaning the street because of their essentiality for the organization of the society ,and thinks those doing such jobs should be respected greatly.
There is no denying/doubt that the cleaners are the most ordinary workers who are confronted with numerous hardships. On one hand, they must get up earlier every day to clean the street while we are still in the sweet sleeping dreams. On the other hand, they also suffer from less respect and lower pay, working all day on the street. It is the cleaners who sweep the floors or streets in spite of the chilly wind or the heavy rain.
Nobody could imagine what a bad environment we would live in/I can’t imagine what our life would be like if there were no cleaners in the city. Undoubtedly, the streets would be full of disgusting rubbish with rats or flies here and there. What's worse, diseases would spread at a very quick speed without the cleaners’ hard work. It is not until then that people will realize that cleaners play an important role in our daily life.
When it comes to the ordinary jobs, opinions vary from person to person. From my point of view, ordinary jobs are anything but ordinary in contemporary society. For one thing, these jobs contribute to the development of our society. For another, these jobs, which are worth our enthusiasm and respect, also provide a chance for us to realize our value or fulfill our dream. Only when every one of us is aware of the importance of these ordinary jobs can we build up a more harmonious and b
- 18 -
eautiful society.
或
From the above , I can safely draw the conclusion that even the smallest and the most ordinary job such as cleaning the street is also the necessary part to keep the society going smoothly. Consequently, those who do the most insignificant jobs should get respect as much as those being engineers or teachers.
As long as we have a correct attitude towards these ordinary jobs, we will find our life meaningful.
