I used to think of myself as a person learned in books, but my bookshelves told a different story. Apart from a few Indian novels and an Australian book, my literature collection only consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I couldn’t ever find anything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors.
So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing.
With no idea where to get those books, I was unlikely to find publications from nearly 200 nations on the shelves of my local bookshop, so I decided to ask the readers all over the world for help. With translations making up only around 4.5 per cent of literary works published in the UK, getting English versions of stories was tricky.
One by one, the books from the countries on the list filled my heart with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed exotic and remote became close and familiar to me. At its best, I learned, reading makes the world real.

The adder（蝰蛇）is the only poisonous snake native to Britain. Adders have the most highly developed poison injecting mechanism of all snakes, but they are not aggressive animals. Adders will only use their poison as a last means of defence, usually if caught or trodden on. No one has died from adder bites in Britain for over 20 years. By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. All snakes have small teeth, so it follows the tall snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. The largest outbreak of the deadly disease Ebola(埃博拉) was caused by an infected bat biting a toddler, say a group of international researchers.
The 17-strong team of European and African tropical disease researchers, ecologists and anthropologists have spent three weeks investigating the outbreak of the disease in Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria.
The researchers captured the bats and other creatures near the village of Meliandoua in remote eastern Guinea, where the present epidemic（流行病）began in December 2013.The boy was bitten and passed the infection on to his mother and both were dead within a week. The disease was then spread far and wide by mourners who came to the funeral.
Scientists have long believed that bats are the main carriers for the disease but it is rare for them to pass it on to man. Most of the previous outbreaks have been caused by meat from dead infected animals collected by hunters who then sell it on. Fruit bats, however, are widely eaten in rural west Africa – either smoked, grilled or in a spicy soup.
Initial research believed that a new strain(类型) of Ebola had emerged in west Africa but according to Herr Leendertz, the strain of the disease is one related to as Zaire Ebola virus, identified more than 10 years ago in the Congo.
Herr Leendertz’s team believe that an infected straw-colored fruit bat brought the disease to Guinea. The mammals are known to travel long distances and usually settle in forests near cities.

‘They can travel far in one night. I don't think an individual bat or colony migrated all the way from Congo or Gabon to west Africa. These big colonies are connected. There is a possibility for the virus to mix between colonies. The bats share the same fruit. It is likely not to have even been one species of bat. The virus may jump from one species to another."

Many years ago, I went through a tough time. One afternoon, I picked my girls up. It was late when we returned home. I went to unlock the door and found my key wouldn’t go in. I kept trying while my daughter went to get a flashlight. When she returned with it, we found somehow the lock had been “stuffed” with sunflower seed shells. Thinking that one of the neighborhood children had been up to no good, I really didn’t give it much consideration.
I found all windows were locked up tight. So I returned to the back door. Oh my God, I will never forget the shock of that moment. The house was empty! Other than a few things remaining on the back porch, everything was gone! Then I heard a car pull into the driveway and found two policemen walking up. They inquired why I had broken into the house. At this point they were not buying any of my story. I could tell from their actions and tone of voice that they thought I was breaking into an empty house for somewhere to sleep.
I asked a neighbor for the phone number of house owner and the officer made a call. The owner was quite shocked to hear my story. She said that my roommate had been going through an eviction(驱逐) process with the court when I moved in with her and had lost the case. She had been ordered to move by 10 am on that date. The court order had been issued the same day I had paid her 1/2 of the rent and a deposit of $300,000.
The owner was very kind and understanding but there was nothing she could do. The house had been rented already and the people were to move in the following weekend.
The officers let me go and I went to gather my girls into the car. They were both exhausted and cold, also very frightened, because they thought their mamma was going to jail. I had to pull over because the tears took control. I couldn’t believe it! Everything we owned was gone, I had used up all our money moving in and paying my “friend” our share of costs. I knew very few people in town, as we had just moved there recently.
I went to sit back in the car with the girls, I talked to the girls, explaining our situation to them so that they wouldn’t be afraid. During this time there was a “street person”

Is it worth it? Are you equal to the challenge? You might be sitting in front of your computer watching a documentary about America, which shows you the breathtaking views of skyscrapers in New York, the beautiful warm weather in San Diego, and the huge parties along the beaches of the Sunshine State, Florida.

Education in the States is really different from other places. Yes, there is the traditional A, B, C, and D grading system, and you get to be on the Dean's List if you have all A's on your transcript. However, these grades don't just come from your test performances. The requirements of classes in the US are much more varied and this is the biggest adjustment that overseas students have to manage.
Some have papers that you have to write every week; others have group projects you must do with your classmates, presentations you make in the class, or research you do by yourself to prove your own idea. There comes a night when you have a couple of projects for different classes, a paper, and an exam to study for. And that night you ask yourself, “What did I get myself into？”
I'm not trying to intimidate you, but you should know what it really is like to study in the States. One thing I can promise you is that it is worth all the hard work you put in. And the more time you give to your study, the more open doors you will have by the time you finish your degree.

Two years ago, I was admitted to high school. Ranking first in my class, I felt proud and superior. Therefore, I dreamed about being admired and treated well everywhere, and I always looked down upon my classmates who turned to me in their studies. M: Hold on a minute. Not only should you go to look at it first but you should also see who your roommate will be.
W: Yeah, you’re right.

M: Hey, look, you can’t study all the time, can you? You have to have some fun, too. Shall we play tennis together?
W: No, I’m going to try to get a good grade in my math exam tomorrow.

W: I always liked arguing and I think I’d enjoy doing it in a debate.
M: Oh, I don’t think the Debate Club is for me.
W: You like to do research in the library, don’t you? You can join the Book Club.
M: That’s a good idea.

W: I don’t have anything I don’t use to donate. I gave it all to my church last Monday.
M: Neither do I. But let’s go to the discount store to get some things.
W: Great idea. We can buy some jackets there and send them out.
M: And it’ll be happy to help someone. Let’s go.

M: Where’s your sandwich box, Sally? I’ll wash it up.
W: I didn’t have sandwiches for lunch today, Dad. I went with James and Polly to the new café at school instead.
M: Oh yes! Are they offering lots of healthy food? Or it is all burgers, bread, chips and sweet juice drinks?
W: Actually, I had a burger. Although it did come with chips, James ate the chips and I had his salad with water. So that was healthy, Dad!

M: All that information is on the Internet, Tara. Why should I waste my time seeing this guy?
W: Mr Martins is an expert and he can help by telling us which programs are the best.
M: All the latest study programs are described very well and can be found online easy.
W: Look, they all say they’re the best but which ones really work? I’m going to see him and listen to the lecture.
M: Go ahead, Tara, but I think it’s not worth it.

M: Sophie! Did you see that quiz show last night? The one presented by Frank Jones?
W: No. Was it any good?
M: It was great. Frank Jones always makes me laugh. I’ve been watching it for the past couple of weeks.
W: Do you think so? I don’t understand why so many people think he’s funny.

M: Well, you’re the fifth or sixth person I’ve told to see it. Some of my friends thought it was going to be too serious so they didn’t bother watching it.
W: So are all the questions really easy and just about pop music or movie stars? I’m not interested in watching it if all the questions are like that.
M: Actually, they start off a bit easy but they get harder and harder as the show goes on.
W: Usually I’m not bad at general knowledge questions — especially ones about history or literature.
M: Yeah, but I’m better at math and science.

M: Susan, what was your first job?
W: Well, I was an assistant in an expensive cake shop. It was my last year at school, before I went to college. I wanted to earn extra money for myself because I come from a family of seven and my parents couldn’t afford to give us much pocket money.
M: Was the shop a nice place to work?
W: In the morning there was this wonderful smell of bread baking. The first week was difficult because I just wanted to eat the cakes, which wasn’t allowed, but then I lost interest in them. We had to keep everything clean, and that was hard work.
M: Did you enjoy serving customers in the shop?
W: The best part of the day was lunchtime, when we were busy. Time just flew. Then it was interesting when people came in to plan a party or a wedding. One of the cooks would come through to discuss the design of the cake. Customers thought the prices were high, but usually ended up buying the cakes anyway. They always wanted a perfect and special wedding or a party and our cakes were perfect and unique.

M: Thanks for calling our competition hotline. We have all the information you need to enter this exciting painting competition. The most important date for you to remember is the one you have to send in your paintings by — that’s the thirty-first of August. We need them all in by that date because the winning paintings will be in a show held from October 15th to November 1st at the School of Arts.
The next important bit of information is the topic for the competition. Last year’s topic of Cities was very successful. This year we’d like to see paintings showing your ideas on the subject of The Future. Think about your world, your family and home — how might it look one hundred years from now?
Unfortunately, we can’t return your paintings but to show that you’ve entered, all of you will receive a certificate. It’ll look great on your bedroom wall next to your posters and photos.
We welcome entries from school groups, so make sure you tell your teacher about the competition. Schools can win a special course with Barry Wells. He’s an artist from Australia, who’s produced pictures for many children’s story books sold here in England. He’ll be doing classes in how to draw cartoons.
