Knowing about yourself means not only that you find out what you are good at and what you like, it also means discovering what you are not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see your aim in life.
Although most students would be unhappy if they found that they had failed an advanced maths course, they have actually learned a great deal about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists, and that they should not be good at accounting work. So failing can help a student to lead a much happier life if he or she draws the right conclusion from the failing. They may then decide on their aim and choose the kind of work they would like to do.
It is impossible to decide whether or not you like something until you have tried it. If you decide you would like to play the violin, you need to take more than one lesson before you can know whether you have any interest or ability.
It is not enough to want to be a great violinist. You also have to like the hard and long training before you become one. If you would enjoy being a great violinist but hate the work, forget it.
It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are still young, and then you will come to a wise decision.
21. If you say you really know yourself, ______.
A. you know what you are good at
B. you have got the whole picture of yourself
C. you keep in mind your aim in life
D. you have less you don’t like than what you like
22. Failing can turn into something good ______.
A. if you have aim in life and get the job you wish to have
B. if you learn something from it C. if your decision is right
D. if you lead a happier life
23.The example of “playing the violin” in Paragraphs 3 and 4 implies that ______.
A. if you don’t like music, don’t practise the violin
B. it takes more than one lesson to learn to play the violin
C. you can decide only after you have tried.
D. you can become a great violinist only after hard and long training.
24.The following are suggested by the writer except ______.
16
A. that people usually make hasty(仓促)decisions
B. that the more experiences, the better decision you will have
C. testing ideas, comparing and then making the decision
D. that you always have enough time before you come to a wise decision

Reading is a great way to improve your English. You'll learn new words, revise previously-taught structures and absorb thousands of useful expressions and phrases... without any effort. By reading, you are receiving valuable language input. And this is how you learn! Remember, language learning is a combination of input + practice. As you're reading, you're taking in language naturally, and you're seeing how it all fits together. This is crucial to your learning.
The great thing about reading is that learning takes place subconsciously. There are no exercises to do, no grammar rules to learn, no tasks to complete... it's all natural. The language flows in through your eyes, and gets recorded in your brain. What could be easier?
The key to effective reading is to read things that you want to read. There are millions of books, magazines and websites out there. You couldn't possibly read them all. So, the important thing is to find things that you like reading. Then, you'll be motivated to read. And then the reading won't be difficult. It'll be easy! And then you'll learn. It's simple.
Remember: read what you want to read. What you like reading. What motivates and inspires you. But where can you start? Well, you could read a book that you've already read in your own language. Simply find a translated version of a book that you have read and enjoyed. This will make processing the content in the target language much easier as you’ll already know what the book is about! You could also read the news. This is great as you can read the news in your own language first, then in English. You'll see that it won't be too difficult as you'll be familiar with the topics and stories. Magazines are also great. Find one that covers a topic you're interested in: business, clothing, guns, horses, houses, housekeeping, stocks and shares, sports, computers, electronics, designing, cooking... you name it, they'll have it. If not, look for information on the internet. There are also websites for every topic under the sun! Why not join a forum? They're a great source of English input as the language is often written in a simple, spoken style. Go to Google Groups, which has discussion groups based on common interests. Just type in the topic that interests you and join the chat.
Finally, how you read is also important. The best thing is to read without using a dictionary. Let the words flow over you. Just skip the parts you don't understand. If you make your reading feel too much like work, it'll stop being fun. Of course, you could make a note of any new words and phrases that you like or see repeated frequently, but try not to break your concentration too much. Also, set y

Parents should ban electronic media during mealtimes and after bedtime as part of a comprehensive“family media use plan”, according to new recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Excessive media use is associated with obesity, poor school performance, aggression and lack of sleep”, said Marjorie Hogan, co-author of the new policy.
Families should have a no-device rule during meals and after bedtime, the guidelines say. Parents should also set family rules covering the use of the Internet, cellphones, including, perhaps, which sites can be visited, and who can be called. The policy also restated the existing recommendations: Kids should limit the amount of screen time for entertainment to less than two hours per day; children younger than 2 shouldn’t have any TV or Internet exposure. Also, televisions and Internet-accessible devices should be kept out of kids’ bedrooms.
Doctors say parents need to obey the family rules, too, to model healthy behavior. That, some say, may be the toughest part. “If you go to any restaurant, Family 3.0 is Mom and Dad on their devices and the kids on theirs”, says Donald, a pediatrician(小儿科医师) and an AAP spokesman. “Who is talking to each other?”
Children aged from 8 to 18 spent an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day consuming media for fun, including TV, music, video games and other content in 2009, according to a 2010 report from the Kaiser Family Foundation. The report was based on a survey of 2002 third through twelfth graders, 702 of whom completed a seven-day media use diary. That was up about an hour and 17 minutes a day from five years earlier. About two-thirds of 8 to 18-year-olds said they had no rules on the amount of time they spent watching TV, playing video games or using the computer, the Kaiser report
16
found.
Use of mobile devices by young kids has soared. A new report from Common Sense Media, a child-advocacy group based in San Francisco, found that 17% of children 8 and younger use mobile devices daily, up from 8% in 2011.
32. Which statement is TRUE according to the first paragraph?
A. Parents are advised to ban electronic media after mealtimes.
B. A “Family media use plan” is being carried out throughout America.
C. Electronic media are evil in the eyes of parents and educators.
D. The overuse of electronic media has caused many severe problems.
33. Why should parents themselves obey the family rules?
A. It’s beneficial to their health.
B. It’s beneficial to their work.
C. It’s essential to parenting their kids.
D. It’s essential to develop good relationship with their kids.
34. What can be inferred according to the report from the Kaiser Family Foundation?
A. The majority of the surveyed kids can use electronic devices as they like in their homes.
B. The report was based on the statistics in 2002.
C. 702 of the surveyed kids completed a seven-day media use diary.
D. Kids are spending less and less time using media for fun.
35. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Consuming media for fun is a nature of kids
B. No use, no worry
C. Measures should be taken to stop children’ s overuse of electronic media
D. Electronic devices threaten the relationship of many families

Dear Manager,
My name is Li Hua. I stayed at your hotel, Forest Hotel, during my visit to the UK from Jan 28 to 30 with my parents. However, the service in your hotel left much to be desired. I’m writing this email to express my opinion.
First, we found our suitcases broken after they were carried to our room by one of your porters. Second, water was leaking out of the toilet in the bathroom. Third, the noise from the bar downstairs went on so late into the night each night that we couldn’t get good rest.
For the above reasons, I have to say that the service in your hotel is of poor quality. Therefore, I would like to receive a written apology from you. Meanwhile, I hope you can improve your service in the future so that none of the above happens again.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
